No time for that. Game starts with Khazars holy warring Cumania, once the war is over they start demanding your counties. They have hundreds of gold so you can't fight back, 2 of your 4 count vassals are tengri and hate your guts.

Revoke vassal counties, save up cash for mercs. I play in Alania a lot, usually as the counts though, IIRC you can borrow from Jews as a vassal, just not expel them. You may also become Jewish, a good strategy if your willing to use it.

I don't remember this situation but what is the plot power to kill your liege? Large enough to fire the plot faster than he starts taking away things?

If not there, how about declaring independence while the holy war against Cumania is going on, using the loan money and your better tactics at defeating his armies piecemeal?

I don't know how the AI does it either. If you can somehow encourage the Khan to use demand conversion on you, that ought to do the trick. Try to raise your opinion of the Khan and the Khan's opinion of you and he'll choose that instead of trying to revoke. The alternative is hoping that Khazaria falls and declaring independence in the chaos.
