Chapter 2: Offensive in the West
December 16th - December 22nd, 1944
All planned offensives started on December 16th at 4:00. Hitler approved Guderian's plan to attack first in Luxembourg, then wait until American reinforcemnt arrive from Maastricht and then attack in Maastricht. Luftwaffe will help our troops in these offensives until we run out of oil. Minister Speer is communicating with Argentina's ministers about the oil. Hitler thinks that situation with oil can be dangerous for Western Front so he ordered that Belgium has to be reconquered as soon as possible.
At 7:00 Guderian met in Vienna with his staff discussing situations in Warsaw and Budapest. Guderian said that 6. Armee should leave Budapest and help in defending of Komarno because if Komarno falls the whole front is in danger but if Budapest falls nothing will change our defensive plans. Also, he said that in Warsaw, Warsaw Uprising will soon begin because Gestapo reported increased activity in Warsaw. Guderian proposed retreat from Warsaw because fight with resistance would just bring more death to Germany. Guderian was warned that Hitler would never approve retreat from Budapest and Warsaw but Guderian said that Hitler doesn't need to know about this. Wilhelm Keitel, Hitler's ass kisser, said that this is treason and that Hitler must know about this. Alferd Jodl supported Guderian's idea and defended Guderian. Jodl said that every man is important for Germany. Commander of Warsaw Garrison, Mj. General von Liebenstein zu Barchfeld, and commander of 9. Armee, Lt. General Fretter-Pico, agreed with Guderian. At the end of the meeting it was decided that German army will retreat from both cities.
At 15:00, Guderian met Führer in his residence Berghof. Alongside Hitler were Reichsmarshall Göring, Wilhelm Keitel, Alfred Jodl and Hans Krebs. Guderian proposed an offensive in the north. He said that Soviet and Finish aren't strong enough and he said that German army could defeat them with blitzkrieg tactic. He also said that General Keitel should lead an attack because he has a good offensive doctrine. Führer agreed with the plan although he didn't plan an offensive in the north. He also appointed Keitel as the general who will lead the attack. Keitel wasn't happy because he knew that Guderian proposed this to remove Keitel from Hitler's HQ.
On December 17th Warsaw Uprising began. Our troops were already in retreat so plans didn't change. This situation may be good for us because Polish Home Army is the army of Democratic Polish Government. At the Yalta Conference Roosvelt, Churchill and Stalin agreed to reorganize the communist Provisional Government of the Republic of Poland that had been installed by the Soviet Union "on a broader democratic basis." Warsaw is now controlled by Democratic Forces so maybe the conflict will break out between USA and Soviet Union.
The offensive in the north started on December 17th at 0:00 as planned. Our attack surpised the Bolshevik forces in north Norway. Also, Grand Admiral Dönitz ordered converting convoys into transports. He ordered that because he wants to evacuate Courland pocket as fast as possible.
On the same day the Bolshevik troops began their offensive in Tuzla and Komarno. Situation in Tuzla is stable and they won't cross the Drina river. Ustasha forces there are fighting because high morale because they claim it's their historical border and they won't let Bolsheviks to cross it. Also, Hitler promoted Guderian to the rank of Field Marshal. He was promoted because of his briliant plans for the offensives in Italy, Belgium and Norway.
In the midnight, on December 18th, attack on Maastricht began. Luftwaffe provided a massive help to German forces there for a few hours before we ran out of oil. Battle of Maastricht is crucial for our offensive in the west. If we win it we will be able to encircle Allied troops in Eindenhoven because there is no second line of defense. We want to embarrasse Allied generals and soldiers and we want to prove that we have superior generals and soldiers because our soldiers are of pure Aryan blood.
On the same day, Red Hordes attacked our troops in Plock and Tilsit. Führer ordered to Heresgruppe Mitte Reserve to help our troops in Tilsit and III. SS-Panzerkorps to help our troops in Plock. When generals told Führer about Warsaw situation he was so mad and he said that all the generals are the traitors of German people. He said that they betrayed him because they didn't tell him about the uprising when it was time. When Führer ordered an attack on Warsaw, generals said that armies there are unable to attack because it would expose the Eastern front. Hitler then told all generals to leave.
On December 21st, Minister for Armaments and War Production Albert Speer came to Führer with good news. He reported that he made a trade agreement with South America countries about the oil. Führer was happy and he thanked Speer for his activity and he said to him that he is a true German patriot unlike those dirty generals.
December 22nd was another good day for the Führer. News came to his HQ in Obersalzberg around 20:00. There were three reports. Reports were from Field Marshal Keitel, Admiral Backenköler and Field Marshal Model. Keitel reported that German Army won the battle of Alta and that he is waiting for new orders. Backenköler reported that Baltische Flotte won the battle of Danzig Bay. Finish navy tried to stop the evacuation of Courland pocket but German will for the win overcome Finland. Field Marshal Model reported that German forces entered Luxembourg and that this is the time to encircle Allied forces in Belgium.
