So after some research showed me that there were no Irish AAR's with DH I have decided to do my own. My other AAR in Vicky 1 is wrapping up and I decided I wanted a change of game so I have gone to KR for this. However I still intend to play as Ireland.

My goals and things you can expect to see:

  • Custom events. Nothing Gamey but just some to make Ireland more interesting.
  • Ireland serving as a Springboard for an Entente victory over the UoB, and Maybe France.
  • A bit of a shake up to other global events.
  • A Pink elephant (Warning Pink Elephant is not actually guaranteed.)

My first update should be within an hour of this first post. After that i cannot guarantee a set schedule but I will try to get to a weekly standard.

Also Cheats will be used but mainly NoFog and event codes if they have to be triggered manually. Outside of that, i hope you join me as I see just how badly a little windswept island in the Atlantic can mess up the International stage. :D

Prologue

First Some History
"In mid-19th century the Green Isle was economically weak and easily troubled by crisis. Between 1846 and 1849 the potato harvest had been completely destroyed and a famine ravaged the land, leading to mass immigrations of Irish to the United States. Gradually, voices grew louder in Great Britain, calling for an independence of Ireland from the British Crown. In 1914 self government was supposed to commence, but it was delayed with the outbreak of the Weltkrieg. The disappointment about this delay culminated - supported by German intelligence - in the suppression of the Easter Uprising in 1916. Continued unrests further delayed the way to independence, but in 1921 a peace treaty was finally signed between the Irish rebels and the British government. According to this treaty, all of Ireland was ceded to the rebels, the new country to be established was named the ""Irish Free State"", it would remain part of the British Empire, and the King would be the Head of State. The Free State was established on January 1 1922 and Michael Collins became Taoiseach and leader of the Irish Free State. However, in July Collins officially proclaimed the establishment of the Kingdom of Ireland, calling to Prince Joachim of Prussia to rule the country. The British were outraged, but they were not willing to start a new war with Germany less than a year after the conclusion of the Weltkrieg. Prince Joachim accepted the offer with enthusiasm, claiming the regnal name of Brian III and announcing his decision to convert to Catholicism. However, his travel to Ireland was constantly postponed, and after more than three months of wait, Collins got rid of the Germans and abolished the monarchy in Ireland. On October 24 1922 Collins declared the end of the Kingdom of Ireland, and the birth of the Republic of Ireland. After more than ten years of rule, in 1936 Collins still leads the nation without any serious opposition, riding on a wave of unbeatable public support. Officially its President, unofficially Michael Collins has become dictator of the Second Republic."

Current Events

Ireland 1936 is a pretty poor country. It's lack of any real Industrial investment, coupled with its focus on agriculture, means that it doesn't really have the means to pay for anything. It's government is still under the rule of Michael Collins, who only manages to stay in control due to a cult of personality.

wbqVCjBh.jpg

It is situated next to the Union of Britain a country that could easily at any time over run it and install a new government. While overseas the British exiles and their Canadian forces could also launch in invasion and see Ireland restored to the British empire. In Europe itself Germany had been an Ally during the struggle for independence but the humiliation around the entire "Prince Joachim Affair" had not been forgotten, or forgiven. To keep it's safety and guarentee it's independence it is going to have to align itself with one of these countries.

Technology wise Ireland unsurprisingly resembles Britain circa 1922. With the exception of modernized agricultural means Ireland has retained the same Industrial technologies for 14 years, it's infantry equipment is also in a similar state as the Irish army, the whole 1 Division it is excluding the Northern Military Police force, continues to use vastly out-dated equipment. However it does retain modern Tactics and Doctrine and while they are not particularly advanced Ireland is capable of producing tanks of the Weltkreig style

emTMbCKh.jpg

As far as Naval and Aerial technology is concerned Ireland is very lacking. While on a Doctrine level Ireland has managed to maintain a modern understanding of Air Forces, it's naval Doctrine is almost non-existent. This displacement in technology can be attributed to the fact that the only major military style shipyard in Ireland's control, The Harland and Wolfe shipyards of Belfast, were both damaged during the Ulster fighting and are severely understaffed due to dissatisfaction in Northern Ireland to Collins rule of the country.

However this is how Ireland has been for 14 years. In the coming years Interesting times would be ahead. And it is not a Chinese curse for nothing that you would wish that a person would live in Interesting Times.

***********************
Right so. Gave Ireland some boosted Inf, Nav, Air and agriculture techs. Also gave it the carribean Fed's Air and nav doctrine techs. It starts off with the Land Doctrine techs of that level anyway with it firmly in the "Firepower Focus" department.

Now a wee bit of bad news. I want to get some custom events going from the get-go but every time I try to add them to the game it just refuses to let me play it. Does anyone have any advice?

Also i have to do some changing of the Tech teams (Add a few and modify others) and I can never get that to work. For example i try to give Aer Lingus the Bomber Design tech group and it never applies in game. Any ideas?

We can't give any solid advice without some codes.

Do you mean, you can't open the save or you can't fire the events? If the latter, I think you need to add the event codes to the save game so that the event would be among those fired. If the former, you probably screwed up the event coding.

What I'm trying to work into it at the moment. If I can get these firing and then events work fine I have a few more to add in.

Sounds interesting, the Irish always seem to go isolationist in my games, when they could certainly play an interesting role in world affairs given their location.

Also, both of your election events have the id 9000064, which would prevent them from working properly.

Chapter 1

As dawn broke on 1936 the world continued to be the tense mess it had been. The International movement inspired fear and hostility from Mittleuropa while overseas the remnants of the once powerful Entente watched for any opportunity to reclaim their power. In Ireland however this was of no concern, these were after all things happening in foreign fields and did not in any way affect the little island. People went about their daily business, in the South normal productive lives, in the North the passive aggression of an oppressed people. The government however, weary of the fact that not knowing what was going on in the world, began to fund the study of new Encryption and Decryption technology, while under the orders of President Collins himself, the old intelligence networks throughout Britain where brought back on-line. This wouldn't mean much now, but it would be a start.

OQcvXHG.png

Badly cropped picture is badly cropped

On January 23rd King Geroge V passed away in Canada in exile. While there were some celebrations of this news among the more hard line members of the Republican groups of Ireland his passing was mourned in Northern Ireland and by a fair number of people in the South, they may not have liked British rule but that did not mean they were necessarily against the King. The new king Edward VIII would be crowned in all pomp and ceremony as the leadership of Canada began to reshuffle itself. In domestic news however a major question was asked of the Irish government, on the 10th of February the position of the Catholic church in the government was brought before President Collins. While in theory such a question should have been brought before the Dail it was in reality more of a decision that the president had to make. The question was whether or not the Church had a place in the government of Ireland or should the country adopt a more secular view?

3Q0ltgj.png

The decision was made that Church and State should be separated and that Ireland should become a more secular and tolerant nation. While this move received some criticism, most noticeably from the Pope himself, it was treated with a sense of cautious optimism by the majority of the Protestant population of Ireland who felt it might be a conciliatory step by the Dublin government. In a similar vein of domestic policy a proposition by the mining board, Bord na Mhona, was brought forward to establish a company to exploit the natural peat bogs of the Irish countryside, they argued that it would help reduce Ireland's dependency on British coal for fuel as well as help create jobs in Ireland. The decision was made to create the company that would be mostly owned by the State but privately run, thus the semi-state Turf Development Board was created.

RL8Ngf6.png

However the creation of this company would be overshadowed by the events of later March when on the 13th the Union of Britain sailed its fleet off the Irish coast in a purely provocative manner. While the Irish government had been forewarned of this event it still sent alarm bells ringing throughout the country and the military was put on full alert. However there was no way Ireland could stand up to a head on fight with the British navy and Ireland was going to have to take a course of action. It could remain neutral and try and ignore the event in the hopes that the British would go away, it could appeal to the Kaiser for help and hope that any such help did not come at the price of placing Prince Joachim on the throne or they could appeal to the Canadians for assistance. While the idea of remaining neutral was quickly abandoned early on the cabinet was split almost 50/50 on whether to appeal to the Kaiser or the King. The decision was finally made by President Collins when he stated:

"Better the devil you know than the one you don't. Telegram the Canadians."

Lq6kZQ4.png

The response was an offer of support both militarily and diplomatically by the Canadians.

GdmRqig.png

While the move would be viewed as unpopular by some members of society it was generally greeted with a sigh of relief as the British were forced to back down. The news was also greeted quite warmly by the Unionist community as they felt their King had not forgotten them and was pledging to defend them against the greater of two evils that was Syndicalism.

This news however did not prevent members of the Ulster Volunteer Force, the UVF, from bombing the Irish Press offices in Dublin. While in the South this action arose feelings of anger and a desire to punish the North in the North it brought feelings of intense fear. Catholic mobs started moving through the streets of Derry and Belfast with the intent on taking revenge on any Protestants they could find while the Protestants feared a return to the dark days of the Northern Campaign. It would all depend on the actions that the Collins government would take.

***************************
So first real update done. Next chapter will see the beginning of my custom events as the government handles this situation as well as addresses the total lack of security the country has.

Also I keep getting this error:

NiuLhyw.png

Anyone have any ideas what it means? I know I added some custom tech teams into Ireland via the save game file (They will show up later) but I'm not sure what is causing it.

Looks like the British had their little plan backfire there!

Sometimes that error means nothing, sometimes it means there's a problem somewhere. If you go into the file called savedebug.txt in the root folder of Darkest Hour and scroll to the very bottom, it should tell you what files and lines the errors are on.

Nice! I think this might be the first time I've seen an Irish KRAAR.

This is truly lovely.

I hope that Harland and Woolf'll be getting some new shipbuilding contracts soon.
