Feb. 24 dev diary

Well, we thought we might want to update you a bit on what is happening on the development front. 0.61 will be more of an evolution than a revolution, but it will also be more than a simple bug-fix.

We have done quite a few things below the hood that you will not really notice much when playing:

* Exported lots of event text to the proper files, which should make the game slightly faster
* Reduced the manpower of dormant units, since they use up supplies and now strengthen them only properly when activated
* Shifted the 9 bat infantry (and related) divisions from model 5 to model 10, which does nothing at all at the moment but gives us modding possibilities for the future

We have also changed some things that are more noticable:

* Recalibrated the whole economy to reduce the money produced from undrafted manpower, as this does not fit at all with the CORE mobilisation philosophy
* Spent a lot of effort on the China - Japan balance, which is one of the downsides of 0.60
* Made a couple of AI changes
* And of course fixed lots and lots of bugs, some reported here, some reported on the Terranova forum and some found by ourselves

When will it be released? Well, at least you won´t have to wait a year for it like for 0.60. Actually at the moment every subversion is pretty releasable as we are not doing any fundamental changes.

Any changes to how Italy´s surrender will be handled? Also, don´t forget about Vichy DOW and how the provinces in Africa can screw the allied AI into doing silly chases and movements in the desert and wasting precious time instead of going for Algeria and Tunisia.

We can give you a bit more, this is the detailed changelog so far:

CORE 0.61 for AoD

2012-12-26:
Made a copy of the 0.60(.25) release version, started various experiments

2013-01-07:
Made a fresh install and restarted development

*** Economic rebalancing
db:
Introduced consumer good need reduction based on development level (FI get increase), analogous to existing military salary levels
Increased the reduction of salary / CG need for low development nations.

misc.txt
# IC to Money Ratio
2.6 # was 2.3 in 0.60
# Military salary cost.. each MP in military service will cost this amount.
0.018 # was 0.022 in 0.60
# _EV_MP_TO_CG_, How much IC does each MP provide in CG?
0.005 # was 0.009 in 0.60

.inc:
Agricultural nations have a small money income from taxing agricultural produce and trade
Small or poor agricultural nations have 1 free money
Medium agricultural nations have 2 free money
Large agricultural nations (IND, CHI) have 3 free money

events:
Burma road events trade with "world market" and not with India. This prevents India from being overloaded with money.
Basic Burma road event no longer trades for metal (which China has plenty) but for the equivalent amount of energy
Other optimisation to Burma road trades
(China economy is collapsing due to lack of energy, reducing money production from industry)
Reduced the money cost of transfer of industry events by 60% (which were meant to draw off excess money from China)
China can reduce Burma Road supplies when out of money
Increased the "colonial modifier" for IND manpower (or rather reduced the relative_manpower settings)
Reduced the direct manpowerpool gains of IND with a colonial multipliers

scenario:
Checked and optimised several trades, GER and CHI
Corrected one bad trade TUR/GER where TUR sent both money and rares to GER rather than getting paid for their rares

ai:
Improved some JAP invasion ai files with knowledge gained during 0.60 Pacific war ai writing

Zsar´s bug list:
12 29 HOL Foreign Minister should be 8066, not 8003.
14 33 Guatemala has a core on <El> Salvador at gamestart. [They should have] claims on British Honduras/Belize, but where does this core come from? - Claim on El salvador deleted but no claim on Belize added.
16 35 Missing scenario descriptions for India in scenario_text.csv. Draft provided. <RO>(used a slightly differently worded text)
17 40 ARM divisions ROM gains by event are named "Divizie <number> Armura", while naming scheme for production is "Divizia <number> Armura"[.] <Rafn>
22 52 The outmost AND-clause in event 20007 [is] superfluous. Reduce complexity, increase readability.
39 Events 169028 and 169029 should refer to "Battleship", as Scharnhorst and Gneisenau were supposed to be battleships with placeholder armament. <VoO> - referred to as "light battleships" now
41 Cored_ai_fin 32066 has as its desc "AI ITA: Cancel War Aid FIN", but it only involves GER+FIN.

19 47 CXB may choose "No Thanks" in the united front event and be dragged into the war anyway, as it auto-enters the alliance with CSX when CHI does.
30 Event 15083 should be mutually exclusive with event 980029 (double offmap ressources). <AcknTT>
31 Event 15083 should not enable tech 6730 (1938 Infantry Division). <AkknTT>

I'm excited by this! I'm having a break from AoD at the moment, but doubtless will start a new game when this comes out. You never know, I may even start an AAR. As a British player, the outcome of the conflict between Japan and China is particular interesting, as it directly impacts my efforts in Burma and elsewhere in the Far East.

March 13 dev diary

Some update on progress. The last two weeks were spent on taking apart the Bitter Peace events. We started out with fixing some obvious flaws like missing provinces in the endless transfer lists or naval units escaping into the deployment pool.

Then we went on to modifying the way Finland is treated in the events. This means that things like a Stalinist FIN puppet receiving provinces from victorious GER will no longer happen.
The events now differentiate between a neutral Finland, an Axis Finland, a Soviet Finland and an annexed Finland (which is reconstituted).

The second big set of changes involves Japan. If Japan is not at war with the Soviets, it will no longer receive huge amounts of land for free but can snatch up Northern Sakhalin (with a small risk of war).
If Japan is at war with the Soviets the territory it gains will depend on its performance. In the worst case, they will receive significantly less than in the current set-up and in the best case significantly more.

There is some fine-tuning (like JAP being informed that the war is over) still to be done, but the basic structure is there - and it works.

There is also a major territory and infrastructure rework coming up.

I am thinking of including a variant of the Chinese surrender events that already were included in CORE 0.41, updated to the capabilities of AoD 1.08.

Quite possibly those changes should then wrap up 0.61, since the interest seems to be high and there are many bug-fixes and corrections already in the code - so we would like to get the product out to you.

Can't applaud this developing approach to peace settlements too much - first Bitter Peace and now Soviet-Japan. It not only has a more intuitive feel to it, but it puts the whole direction and impetus of campaigning into a more realistic framework.

Some more short news from our side. Most important, we have decided to freeze work on 0.61 where it is at the moment and ready the version for release. This means one more internal subversion, some testing, some formal work and then a finalised 0.61.

If you want a date, let´s call it "in April".

What is in the version is the modified Bitter Peace and China surrender events, which are pretty much debugged and polished.
You can also rely on a significantly better performance of the ai in the Japan/China theater, which turned out to be one of the weaknesses we had in 0.60.
Otherwise it is bugfixes, bugfixes and bugfixes plus a lot of finetuning.

What we are skipping intentionally is the infrastructure and terrain type rework, this is still ongoing and would push back the release date too much.

Excellent news; thanks again for all the work that's gone into it. I'll be starting a new AoD game as soon as it comes out.

Actually Dec is doing this and I trust that he thinks it through. I am into ministers and leaders at the moment, bringing the CORE database up to date with the changes made for AoD 1.08.

I'm sure dec will do a stellar job. So are you also tinkering with minister and leader traits? I remember playing UK was very tough due to unplausible particular traits.

AoD 1.08 did a lot for ministers and leaders. CORE has not done a lot there except for Hagar´s huge German leader rewrite and the occasional spotting of an error.

I really went through all minister and leader files, but mainly with the aim of updating the images. There are also a lot of name corrections.

Some files have so many changes that I left them for later. But CORE should now use more or less all the new minister and leader images that came with 1.08 plus all the new leaders and ministers.

I went a bit slow on traits, but began to trust the 1.08 research more as I went. By now FIN and ITA, which are very well researched, are almost completely taken from 1.08.
I also asked permission from bestmajor to include his Japan work, since 1.08 did very little for Japan.

We now have a plan to distribute the Release Candidate to the devs and Beta Team over the weekend ...

Teg, you may want to check FINs leaders names. not sure if i have the correct 1.08 here, but in this version a lot of Umlauts in the leaders ministers names have been replaced (ä-> ae)

One thing that CORE has changed at some time is Umlauts in names. Possibly even in cased where an ae should have remained an ae in the language of the person.

So I kept CORE´s Umlaut changes but took 1.08´s images ....
