If the Direct3D key does not exist, please create it (right click on "Wine" -> New -> Key). Inside that registry key we want to create the following string values (right click in empty space on the right -> New -> String Value)

OffscreenRenderingMode = "fbo"
Note that we didn't assign a value to the VideoMemorySize string yet. You have to enter the amount of your video card's memory which is normally something like "256" or "512". Please do so by double clicking the item and writing down the number in the dialog box.

[*]Move upwards one level in the registry, so that we are back to "Wine". We need to navigate to a key called "DirectSound". If it's not there, create it. Move into that key, just as we did before and create a new string value called

MaxShadowSize = "0"
(Yes, it's still a string value!)

Am i right in thinking that the only one of the keys that has anything in the 'data' field is the VideoMemorySize.

Whereas the other ones like:

No no, the 'data' field is "0" (without the "") as Gaute65 said. Let me chance the HowTo, to make it more clear. Also the data part of OffscreenRenderingMode is "fbo".

EDIT: The HowTo is changed. Do you think it's more clear now? Let me know if you can run HOI3 after setting um the registry correct...

Thanks for the continued support.

Well, i have got back to the situation (roughly) i was originally at (after a complete re-install). The game now starts to load (i hear the music as well) but when the load screen gets to "Map properly initialized" it crashes with the following message in the terminal.

Before that however - back to the registry query i had - i have tried again with the amended instructions (thanks) and my registry now looks like this:

by the way - do you mean that Playonlinux already knows what to install to get Hoi3 to work or do you still need all the info that Irrlicht provided anyway?

Thanks for the How-to. Great work.

After a bit of tweaking, got HOi3 to play without problems :) Had some problems with sound for a bit, but think it was related to having some problems with sound generally, so after fixing some issues there it worked without problems.

Ok, had to reinstall ubuntu because of lack of space, therefore i also had some problems with sound :)

Also making a copy of the dir for modding works, using the same env prefix, but starting the exe from the copied dir(have to do this in a terminal though, or make a script/launcher).

Also tested downloading Dlc-sprites, had no problem there (but havent checked ingame).

You need to do the same thing as in wine, playonlinux is an graphical frontend for wine, so it's no terminal.

Beside PixelShader support, what kind of video card do you have and what amount did you put into VideoMemorySize? Does it match your video card's memory?
 
Hello, I followed your guide but it doesn't work.
This is the output:

I think maybe what i have left in the quote is the problem and it leads to a segmentation fault. Had the same thing going on and the game would crash under loading. This is a sound problem. All i did to fix it was to go into hoi3 folder and change settings.txt before starting the game. Set the master volume to 0 (no sound) then try loading the game again. My game then loaded fine. I also turned on sound ingame again, but i dont remeber if this before or after i installed some codec's and stuff on ubuntu(see below)

It seems the way i fixed this was to installed Amarok and some other things to suppport sound (mp3 etc), as i was on a fresh ubuntu install. But tbh i am not sure why this helped....well except for the stated reason, i needed some music programs and codec's and that might have helped. Hope this helps :)

And what version of Wine are you using ?

@doctoxic: Depending on your hardware "OffscreenRenderingMode" may be set to something different. For example, i use "Fbo" but experienced crash with one of the other renderers on my Radeon HD4770. By the way, i found your memory ammount quite unusual : VideoMemorySize = 896.

The debug info is rather not understandable by humans with those memory adresses. You may have to give a try with a wine binary compiled with debug symbols.

hmmm video memory is 896 for my card (nvidia GTX260) however it got me thinking and i tried an install on another PC (with same linux setup) with an old nVidia 7900GTO with 512mb and lo and behold - it worked!!

i'm wondering if wine doesn't like 896mb graphics cards - anyone else got it working with this type of card?

Try and set the value to 512 for your gtx260.
 
Yeap give a try with 512. 896*is damn too strange. On the other hand video memory store usually textures, and most of he time 512*is enough. Hoi3*may use less than 256…

OffscreenRenderingMode variants are indeed : fbo, pbuffer and backbuffer. There is no case problem involved in wine registry, afaik.

It is maybe related to nvidia drivers on quite new hardware.
