How do you decide on a trait?
I use the following:
Panzer leader: Commanded a panzer division.
Commando: Commanded a mountiner division
Old Guard: Attained his MG rank prior to '36
Defensive: Gendermarie, fortification specialist or documented good defensive skill
Engineer: Was an engineer by training
Logistic wizard: Had some office in the ministry distributing war matteriel
Trickster: Usually a cartographer or a communication expert. Someone in the intelligence agencies.

These are well an OK, but I'm at loss at how to assign offensive and fortress buster traits. The later is pretty useless
PL - commanded a panzer division some months or was otherwise skilled in their use
Co - commanded a marine/mountain/paratrooper division for some months
OG - I don't actually use this in its (presumably) intended way--I use I rather to simulate those who, once they had an idea, stuck to it even if all the evidence points to the fact that the idea is, well, absolutely stupid. though I also do retain it for those leaders who were generals during the Great War (not sure about the wars in its aftermath though--for example, Blyucher and Buddeny are OGs but Tukchaevsky isn't...)
DD - fortification specialist or documented defensive skill
En - was engineer by training
LW - quartermastery training, or is a skilled organizer
Tr - documented as being able to constantly keep the enemy off balance, thinking up and implementing new ideas for deception or the like
OD - documented as being as aggressive, particularly skillful in pushing the enemy out of his positions or the like
FB - documented as being particularly skillful in penetrating heavy enemy fortifications
WS - documented as being able to cope with the winter better than average or being able to use the weather in his favor

right, some of these could possibly be repeats from before. I'll segregate these from the rest, but I'm posting them (again) as I've finally just found pictures of them. these are all for the Soviet Union

possibly old:
Gurtiev - 2/5 from '42, he is killed in action in '44
Gorishnij - 1/4, dates are '42/'45
Rosly - 1/5, dates are '40/'42

new:
Zhdanov - 2/6 panzer leader, dates '42/'44. army
Glagolev - 2/7 offensive doctrine, dates are '39/'42/'43, he dies in '47. army
Kupriianov D.A. - 1/5, dates '42/'44. army
Polbin - 2/7 tank buster from '39, he dies/is killed in '45. air
Firsov - 1/5, dates '41/'44
Mul'tan - 1/5, dates are '42/'44

I've found pictures for all of these guys

What I tend to use - also note that all the ones that rely on time spent in command, I remove the trait if they were bad at their command:

PL - Commanded an armoured or mechanized force for some time (several months of combat or longer of non-combat) or was particularly skilled either at using in general or at commanding in specific ways armoured or combined arms forces
Co - Either commanded/was part of special forces (like the Rangers, say) for some time or commanded a mountain/paratrooper/marine division for some time
OG - Commanded forces in WWI (not fought in WWI, but had a rank where he did not fight but instead issued orders - e.g. major, colonel, and up. Also can be removed if they display later evidence of adopting new ideas) or rigidly stuck to established doctrine even in the face of new evidence showing its ineffectiveness - other things, too, such as stubbornness/refusal to budge on certain issues, etc.
DD - Fortifications commander (in combat only) or someone who displayed special talents for fighting on the defensive - an example would be Messe's outstanding retreat across half of Egypt, all of Libya, and Tunisia while still holding back the British and keeping his army almost entirely intact, until he had his back up against the Americans
En - Training as an engineer - commanded engineer forces/corps - special talent for fording rivers in different ways
LW - Logistical or certain other administrative post(s) - such as the Italian head of the Customs Corps - or displayed a talent for finding/scrounging/obtaining supplies for their men even in dire straits or had some exemplary mark on their record such as maintaining supply lines through the jungles of Burma without any bridges or something like that
Tr - Essentially, tricked their enemy. Constantly trying new tactics to outwit their enemies, innovative, their opponents never really knew what was coming next - an example would be Yamashita's campaign in Malaya, in which he consistently used innovative tactics, such as amphibious assaults at the same time as ground attacks on the same forces, pincer manoeuvres in the narrow Malayan Peninsula, outflanking and encirclements, etc and managed to defeat General Percival's 130,000 forces with less than half that number.
OD - Displayed a special talent for offensive action - took part effectively in large offensive campaigns - commanded mobile corps (cavalry, motorized, etc.) with effectiveness, especially in actual combat
FB - Displayed a special talent for getting around or through fortifications without excessive loss of life. Examples would probably be the general in charge of Patton's attack on the fortress at Metz, or some of the German generals in charge of attacking fortified Soviet urban areas
WS - Displayed an aptitude for fighting in winter, or in arctic areas

Probably some others I can't remember off the top of my head. Generally, most of them are decided on a case-by-case basis anyway, since every general is different.

Hungarian leaders removed

It might sound strage but I'm starting this subthread by listing the generals to be removed...

András Sándor: He appears both as a air commander and a land general. No need for that. Removed from the land unit pooll. [31100]

There is a couple of guys who had a bravery medal, and because their picture is available they were put in (apparently). They are of very low rank and thus they are removed. Please note that the Air section has some lower ranking leaders, but there it is OK, very few generals were associated with the air force:

Babics Kálmán lance sergeant
Barankay József captian (he died on the front, and thus it would be strange to extrapolate his rank to MGen in some 8-10 years or so)
Dalos Ferenc private
Duska László captain
Gátmezei József sergeant
Honti István sergeant
Massányi Tibor captian
Merész László ensign
Pataky Dezső sergeant
Tapody Lajos staff sergeant
Ujvári Mihály staff sergeant

There are others that have been retired prior to '36.

Janky Kocsárd retired in 1930. Was chief of staff
Ferjentsik Ottó retired in 1930. Was leader of the army.
Gömbös Gyula Prime Minister of Hungary. Died 6th October '36. Because he was a politician at that time, he was not an active member of the military.

Hungarian leaders, service branch changed
There is two assignment which needs changed. One was OK with paradox, the other is a plain mistake.
Werth Henrik had nothing to do with the navy. Ranks: 26/31/38 Skill 2/7
Trait OG+Logistics. He was chief of the staff. He played fundamental role in the doctrinal organisation of the army (both land and air) prior to the war.
Littay András He was an infantry general. A many were shocked when he was asked to be the first chief of the air forces. Please also note that bad spelling in the tech team file! I think he can be a land leader, there will be enough air leaders.
Real Ranks: 34/37/40 but he should start as LtGen (30/30/40). Skill 2/6 Old Guard

Note: Hungarian names come in "natural" order, that is family name comes first followed by the given name. Here I give full names, the leader file contains only the family name, and initials if there is more than one leader with the same family name

I seem to recall it being said this project is open source for the community, but I can't find that specific quote anywhere (and I don't want to trample on toes). I'd love to package it with SMEP 5.0 for Doomsday. Is this acceptable?

excellent, Kunadam. a few questions though:
1) what's Janky's ID, as I can't seem to find him?
2) we delete the Werth naval leader?
3) we change Littay from an air leader to an army leader?

while I'm fairly sure it is, I don't know what Phoenix's position is. you are, however, totally welcome to use my contributions.

now for more of my own contributions.

new leaders, Soviet Union:
Utin - 2/5 tank buster, dates are '43/'45. he dies in '50. air
Safiulin - 1/5, '42/'44. army
Sviridov K.V. - 1/5 panzer leader, '39/'42. army
Shevchenko - 2/6 tank buster, '40/'46. air
Anashkin - 2/6, '41/'44, dies in '51. army
Fominyk E.I. - 1/5 panzer leader, '42/'44. army

new leaders, Germany:
Brücher - 2/5, '44/'45. army
Bader Ro. - 2/5 commando, '44. army (note that there is already a German Bader leader; this is Paul Bader)
von Braun - 2/6 commando, '43/'44. army
von Eichstedt - 2/6 from '44. army
Weinknecht - 2/6, he's in the beginning roster (as far as I can tell) and becomes lt gen in '44.

I still have some iirc 50+ Soviet and German (primarily Soviet) leaders to add and find picture for.

(1) Janky: 31146
He was Kozsard or something, which is a misspelled version of his first name. Took some time to figure out who he is...

(2) Cange him into a land leader.
(3) Yes.

Changes to existing generals
* I have more or less sticked to real rank dates (I still have test wether the game remains ejoyable with it).
* Death dates were increased to 60 if the real death date was later than 1960, or if the leader died violently (e.g. executed because of war crimes. Most such cases were created...)
* Skills were increased. Gothard's opinion:

Hungarian Officers were really an Elite class. They were the best officers in Europe next to the germans. hey were irreplaceable.. thats why the Russian losses were such a disaster. I dont really like the way the game portrays the skill level of the average Hungarian officer.

From educational requirements to service requirements to training to length of time in rank the Hungarians were Top-rate on any scale. Much better than french , italian , romanian or russian and compareable to any american or british officer. They served with the troops unlike italian elitist officers, they were career oriented and crosstrained in more than 1 branch of arms. Most of them had at least 1 year of training with foreign militaries.
Hungarian officers grasped the concept of mobile warfare much earlier than their peers in european armies but between trianon, lack of money and industry and the time factor they werent really able to show their stuff.
In terms of raw courage and leadership they excelled and any time they met an enemy on an equal footing ( rarely ) they excelled. They had solid grasps of logisitics and movement and their mechanical aptitude and attention to detail can be seen simply by looking at the incredible IN SERVICE/UNDER REPAIR figures of their mechanised and motorised formations.

HUngary had a lot going against them but they were a cunning and resourceful nation and this was shown by their outstanding officers.
After reading some book I cannot disagree.
Unless I have some indication of their individual skill I extrapolated from their training. Anyone completing the highest schools (Hadiakadémia) had max skill 6, and starsting skill 2 (except the late commers, who had 0-1). Leaders having only military academy training have max skill 5, and start skill 1. Leaders not having military academy training have max skill 4 and start skill 0.
The best and most famous leaders have 3/7.
Even thought most countries have someone with max skill 9 (or 8) I avoided that here.

Álgya-Pap Zoltán: Skill 2/6. Death date 87. Real ranks 40/42. Game ranks 38/42
Bajnóczy József: Skill 2/6. Real MG rank was 37, stayed with 36
Bakay Szilárd Skill 2/6. MG rank in 40
Bartha Károly Skill 2/6. Died 1964. General in 38, but this was not changed from 36.
Béldy Alajos Real ranks 39/41/44. Game ranks 37/41/44
Beregffy Károly Skill 3/7. Rank 39/41/44. Logistic wizard
Billinitzer Ernő Rank 44/45 Not OG. Died 1976
Bor Jenő Skill 2/6
Brunswik György Rank 41/43
Csatay Lajos Skill 3/7. Rank 38/41/43. Not OG
Deák Ferenc Skill 1/6
Decleva Zoltán Skill 2/6. Rank 38/40/42. Not OG
Denk Gusztáv Skill 1/6. Rank 30/30/38
Domaniczky Ödön Skill 2/6. Real rank 39/41
Dömötör János Skill 2/6. Rank 39/42, Real rank 40/42 Not OG.

Sure, go ahead and use them for HIP. In fact, here's an open announcement: All work I/we do here is open for all mods to use. In other words, take it, put it in your mod, I'm more than happy to have my/our work available to more people. My only restriction is that you make sure to credit the CLMIP for the changed leader files, and the names of the contributors (Right now, just me and Myth). In other words, it's great if you want to use our work, just don't claim it as your own. Also, if you are adopting these files for use in a mod, please post here and let us know.

Essentially, I would love it if you put this in SMEP, Atruejedi. Just, as with pretty much anything people make, please credit myself, Myth, and kunadam, as well as the CLMIP itself. And thanks for your 'vote of confidence', if you will!

I need to get motivated. I haven't done enough work on this in a long time.

I'm thinking I might get myself back into it by changing and uploading a Hungary file with all of kunadam's changes but none added of my own. Also, I really need to get around to creating and uploading an Armageddon-friendly Italy 1.2 file.

As well, once I'm done the Hungary file and Italy 1.2, I'll update the pack in the first post.

Don't waste your time manually updating the entries. I will post the whole file and some pics.

As a suggestion, Phoenix, it is very difficult to find what files to download and which are the most recent. I would suggest packaging everything up occassionally or posting links to the individual files in the first post of this thread at the very top. It would be very helpful :)

New Hungarian Leader File:

For Hungary alone.

Contains thirty-one name changes, removes fifteen leaders who had retired or never achieved a rank high enough, changes the service branch for two leaders, changes skill/trait/rank years on pretty much every leader in the file, adds a whole lot of new leaders and a lot of new pictures. Detailed (though not complete) changelist can be found below. For more questions, contact kunadam, who did all the work on this one.

Latest version: Hungary leader file v1.1

To download the latest file, click here.
To install it, do the following:
1) Download the file.
2) Unzip the file to any folder on your computer
3) Rename your current 'db/leaders/hungary.csv' leader file to something else. Make sure to name it something you will remember. (If you have previously installed any version of the Hungary file, this stage may be skipped and the file simply overwritten)
4) Place the 'hungary.csv' file in the db/leaders folder.
5) Place the downloaded pictures in the gfx/interface/pics folder

If at any time you are prompted as to whether you want to overwrite a file (unless in the case described in step 3) and you click yes, it may irreparably change your game and prevent you from undoing the changes implemented by this pack and necessitate a full reinstall of the game in order for such things as multiplayer. We take no responsibility for this. My advice is if you are prompted to overwrite a picture file (or if worried about this prospect), cancel the install, copy all the picture files between L31100 and L31500 (or closest approximate), paste them somewhere else on your harddrive, and reinstall the zip file, this time overwriting the pictures.

In the future, kunadam, when uploading pictures, try to remember that included in the 36x50 pixel format should be a one pixel border around the edge of the picture. I went through and manually added it to every picture in the file, but it took some time. Great work!

And Myth or kunadam, would you mind going through and making sure it's the deathdate that I changed? My editor wouldn't load the file, so I ended up doing it by hand in notepad, and I want to make sure I wasn't editing some other crucial date. I'm 99% sure I wasn't, but that's a pretty crucial bug if I screwed it up.

That was something I did not know. Any reason for it? Anyway I will put the white border to the new one I do.

You have changed to right column. Albeit would have taken a few sec in Excel...

The reason for the white border is that all the other pictures have it, so we just make our new pictures match the pre-existing ones. The border's there because there is no built-in border around the picture in-game, so without a white border you frequently end up with a fairly ugly border around the pictures, because you might have black or grey on the black background around the picture. With the border you get a nice crisp box. It's just an aesthetics thing.

I'm pondering how we can make this project compatible with SMEP. Frankly, I think it's easier just to put in the SMEP thread, "The Community Leader/Minister Improvement Project is highly recommended."

Afterall, there are no compatibility issues thus far. You've edited leader files, I have not. It would be nice to package this in with SMEP, but I fear it would become outdated very quickly at the pace you fellows work :)

SMEP does, however, edit minister files. We might have issues here. But you guys haven't done any work on ministers yet, it seems. That's good for me ;)

Your thoughts?

Sounds like a good approach. An alternative would be to put all the latest CLMIP leader files packaged in with each SMEP version, adding all our new versions/files to each version of SMEP as it came out, and to put a note together with the download saying that in order to get the most up-to-date leader files, one would have to come download them straight from us.

On another note, I'm thinking I might get some work done tonight, on Italy or Canada. Depends just when my brother leaves the house, and whether or not I end up finding something more entertaining to do.

Like clipping my toenails.

Sztójay Döme I'm at a loss with him. He was military ataché to Berlin (one of the reason he was selected as Prime minister by the Germans). Was not leading any formation ever.

There is a number of leaders that I have not found:
Kir, Revy, Berzin
