It depends on what you want to do. Stuff like the Extended timeline mods or Extended Tech stuff are good for longer play runs.

But then there are the Kaiserreich, Old World Blues stuff for something very different.

Then you have something like Milleinum Dawn and Road to 56, BlackIce for major overhauls.

Then you have Tool type mods like State Transfer Tool, Expert AI, Tool Pack etc. for utility stuff for when things go wrong or you want the game to work better.

Then you have visual mods like Coloured Buttons, FPS map, or Modifier Icons for visual changes.

Mostly, I play my own mods - and a good portion of that is testing them as the versions change to update them on Steam.

I do use some mods from steam:
"Expanded Loading Screen Quotes" - same as the game quotes but lots more
"Larger Icon Selection Box" - less scrolling if you have lots of army/navy icons
"Naval and Air Base Icons" - I'm old, need the help
"Naval Reskin - Paint the Guns" - Nicely done ship graphics
"Taco Bell Start Sound" - just cause it is silly
"[AIGFX] Visible Railroads" - again, helps my old, tired eyes, lol

and finally
"KaiserReich" (for compatibility testing with my own mods)
"Road to 56" (for compatibility testing with my own mods)

The last two I never have actually played except after users of one of my mods asked for sub-mods.

The only mods I've used so far are graphical tweaks (flags, portraits).

One of these days I should give bigger mods (and even save imports) a try.

Some of my must-have mods for ironman are Colored events for flavor, colour blindness mod to be able to see capitulation progress, coloured ship backgrounds, Lamp's eqpt icons and strategic view adjustments. The game still feels like it needs some touching up on the colors of the UI to make it more clear.

Kaiserreich and Elite AI are mods I keep coming back to.

Equestria at War deserves a special shoutout for how absurd it is that it's good

But the god of HoI mods has gotta be Kaiserreich. Nearly 20 years ago when I was about 12 I did some unit names and stuff for them, basic baby modding stuff. And before that I remember playing ATRUS. It's freakin awesome that it's still going two games and countless years later, regular updates, practically a whole cinematic universe. Kaiserreich is special.

I enjoy Ironman mode to keep it authentic, and honestly, I think I'd cheat a bit too often otherwise ;)

But I'm really interested in the mod topic, especially for graphic ones: anything improving the HUD/interface: please detail what you think are the best (and maintained) ones.

Old world blues is also p. good. Especially if you like the fallout Universe.

I should give Kaiserreich a chance, but I feel I would be lost with all the damn lore. I even have Darkest Hour and yet I never tried Kaiserreich.

I'm testing out Eight Years' War of Resistance.
I normally just use 4 different Texture overhauls.
I really miss turretfix.
Lot's of fun so far. First time playing a HOI4 mod.
I didn't enjoy the HOI3 mods much.
