After playing a lot in 1178 with the new Roads to Power DLC, I found warfare to be incredibly tedious and just simply not fun. Here is what my experience with warfare in the 1178 start date looks like:

At the beginning of a war there is a big battle and I (usually) beat the enemy army and start to siege an enemy holding. Because of the high fort levels in 1178 I barely manage to capture the holding before the enemy army returns fully replenished and starts to siege one of my holdings or tries to recapture one of theirs. I have to chase them across the map, beat them in another battle and return back to the enemy's realm to siege another holding. At which point the enemy army turns up fully replenished again, this time maybe even with some mercenaries, and the cycle continues. It takes forever to win a war this way because war score from battles is capped at 50% and having to constantly chase the enemy army keeps you from gaining war score from capturing holdings.

In my opinion there are three reasons why warfare in 1178 is so tedious:
  1. Reinforcement rates are too high: Losing a big battle should be painful and take a long time to recover from. It would give the winning side time to siege holdings and gain war score before another big battle, therefore shortening wars significantly.
  2. Gold income is too high: Because of higher development and better buildings, rulers rarely struggle with gold in 1178, which means that the can afford to endlessly go to war and spend enormous amounts of money on mercenaries. The economy in general needs a rework and playing in 1178 has made that apparent again.
  3. Warfare AI needs improvement: It makes sense that AI generals would seek out terrain that favors their army, however, it does not make sense that we have to chase the enemy army across the whole map. The amount of holdings an AI army retreats before standing their ground and engaging in battle should be limited.

What do you guys think? Has your experience been similar so far?

Similar experience, but I counter that with besieger accolade and extra trebuchets.
Also check the fort levels and go for the ones with lower levels.

When it comes to combat, defensive advantage is out of this world in this patch.

There's a significant dev creep in 1178

Shitstain-on-mud number 947294 has 26 dev meanwhile Cities of Wonders number 12 has 31 dev, whole map looks similar

Yeah the combat loop in 1178 is unbearably awful. Fighting the countless rebellions as Byzantium made me quit the game cause not only do I have to deal with a coalition of 100 opinion rebellious vassals, I have to spend forever sieging their provinces while repeatedly defeating or completely stacking wiping their armies just for them to instantly replenish their entire army in a couple months again and again.

Uhhhhhhh sieges aren't tedious at all? Just get your stack of 16 trebuchets in an army led by an engineer with the siege accolade and enjoy your 4-day siege event ticks for the <6 months it takes to finish the siege, or just assault it with levies after you get your large breach two weeks in. Also I can't understand why you would ever be chasing stacks around. When they leave the siege they'll be coming back to another 15-month wait and meanwhile you'll have sieged down three more castles yourself.

1) I know making huge trebuchet regiments is the answer to most of that currently but that’s not always feasible and doesn‘t address that the AI faces similar problems.

2) Chasing enemy armies around is unfortunately often necessary. For example, when they are besieging their own holdings that you‘ve just taken (bc then they take it back far quicker). Or if they besiege your capital and you are at risk of them capturing your family members and gaining a lot of war score.

Is there anyone that doesn't just max out the size of every MAA regiment?
