I have managed to play several full games of stellaris with no issue until recently when i tried to continue a game I was playing the day prior and received the error message "Failed to create a graphics device. Exiting." Looking up the error i found several discussions, both here and on steam, the presented a lot of potential fixes (Editing/deleting settings.txt, updating video drivers, reinstalling game, etc.) but none of them have worked for me.

I also noticed that the stellaris launcher will close about 10 seconds after it launches regardless of if I press anything or not. I don't know if this issue is related but i have seen no discussion regarding it as of yet

You've got a new nVidia driver there, I think it has not installed cleanly as the game is trying to run on the Intel instead.

- uninstall the existing nVidia driver

- reboot

- install the latest by fresh download from here:
https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

- reboot again.

All the best!

Following the given steps didn't seem to work. I still get the same error as well as the same system.log output

I am assuming there is no special tool I need to properly uninstall the drivers?

There is one for AMD but I'm not aware of one for nVidia.

Can I see those two files again please plus pdx_settings.txt , settings.txt , error.log .

I don't presently have a settings.txt, It might have gotten deleted during one of the fresh installs, but here are the rest of the requested files

Exactly the same. Run the nVidia Control Panel app, go into Manage 3D settings, and force stellaris.exe onto the "high power nVidia" option in there. Any better?

Also i see nothing under the nVidia section of that dxdiag about monitors. this is not one of those laptops with separate monitor connections for the Intel and nVidia, is it?

Twas surprisingly difficult to get the nVidia control panel, I had to reinstall the drivers again, but nonetheless it didn't fix the issue

As for your question about the monitor, I don't believe there are separate connections for the two cards but I might not fully understand what you are asking
I will include the specs below on the off chance it better answers the question

ok, so I just plugged in an external monitor and the game was able to launch.
The graphics only update when the application is on the aforementioned external monitor.
This is rather inconvenient not to mention exceptionally odd as I never needed another monitor to play.
That being said i am able to play now which is progress

What I mean is if the Intel video only services the internal display:
Monitor Name: Generic PnP Monitor
Monitor Model: unknown
Monitor Id: CMN1738
Native Mode: 1920 x 1080(p) (60.008Hz)
Output Type: Internal
and the nVidia only services the external display (either VGA or HDMI port) then that would explain why the game tried to start up on the Intel all the time. It doesn't explain why it fails to start like that though; while Intels are not supported hardware they should at least let the game begin.

Given that I have been able to play the game on this laptop with no external display in the past I would assume the nVidia can service the internal display.
Though now my laptop seems to be acting exactly as you described. I not sure when or how that would have changed nor how I would change it back

I can only say that the game has no influence whatsoever on what video system gets used, that is done by the nVidia utilities.

You could perhaps try reverting to whatever nVidia driver you had before this went wrong. For more than that you may need to contact HP support.
