I have restarted the game over 80 times in the last hour hoping to get an oppose Hitler start.

This is beyond frustrating, what's the point of ticking off the historical AI focus if it is not going to change anything? Can we please get a third option where every possibility in exclusive focus to have an equal chance? At this point, I am not longer interested in playing my game just seeing how long it is going to take before it happens.

Answers to frequent comments:

  • Yes I am sure I ticked off the historical focus option.
  • I am aware this is rng, it doesn't mean there isn't something the devs can do to improve the QoL.
  • No, I want to play an ironman game, that's the whole point.
  • All mods are achievement compatible.

Oh If forgot about that one, fair enough. However, my question now, it possible to get such a start or the weights in the game are misleading? Because 100 starts is statistically improbable if the Rheinland option is just 10 times more likely.

Did you actually turn off the entire game as well? RNG seems sticky seeded at launch.

Not everytime, but yes. Sorry to ask this, but how doeyou know that the seed isn't changing? This is quite interesting if true.
Trial&error.. Then again I'm not confident the AI will pick the oppose Hitler path EVER even with historical turned off.
If you're not playing ironman you could always open up the console at game start and type "tag GER" and then manually select that NF and then tag back.

Alright, I'll try a few restarts and see how this goes. Thanks for the tip.

In Civilization 5, there's an option to fix the random seed (which means random things always behave the same after save-reload) this is to prevent exploitation by save-reload. There's also an option to regenerate the seed each time. They call this pseudo-random in computer science and math. I don't know what type of random HOI4 actually using. I think some modder can actually see this in the code.

True, the factors are 10 and 1 for Rhineland and Oppose Hitler respectively, but I don't think it's that simple.

Although, assuming 100 starts and a flat 1/11 chance for the OH focus, the chance for an Oppose Hitler to have occurred does have the first six digits as straight nines.

Which means something is up, I will probably reinstall the game and if it still doesn't work I'll submit a bug report.

That would be true if Rhineland and Oppose Hitler were the only two choices from the start. That is not the case since the AI can also choose Four Year Plan or Air Innovations or Army Innovations or Naval Rearmament to start with.

Time for some actual math. There are 6 focus that are available at the begining of the game with weights of : 12, 1,1,10,1,1. So Rhineland has a probability of 10/26, and Oppose Hitler at 1/26. Meaning almost a 4% chance at the game start.

I think I have seen an AI oppose Hitler once. This is fine since imperial Germany, when played an AI, is so weak that it ruins the balance of the game. Letting us pick it at the start would of course alleviate this issue, since we could then manually set up a balanced scenario.

I think there's also a mutual exclusion factor, which again halves the probability of NFs that have an exclusive choice. Will check later. If true the probability for 80 failures would be 20%14%.

That is not how that system works. The focuses set to 1 are never chosen and the choice is between the 12 and the 10. We could fix this (and I have pushed for it before) but it shouldn't be as big of an issue come 1.6 anyway.

Can't you just "tag GER", use the console cheats that enable you to pick any NF without pre-conditions, click the oppose ones and tag back to your nation?
That doesn't involve saving and reloading. Or is the console locked in ironman?

If all else fails: since you're not doing a real ironman anyways (with your insistance on having an alternate Germany), why don't you just disable ironman and implement a house rule, only to use one save? Please tell me, it's not for those abitrary steam achievements...

Even if it is for achievements, you can just play non-ironman, get your game to the state which causes the achievement to fire, then use Steam Achievement Manager to trigger the achievement for you.

Then why have an a-historical mode then? If the AI will never pick unlikely options because they are weighted so low?
