Hi folks, noob question: I have found a Dimensional Portal on a newly-colonised planet. It has placed a research project in my situation log, which I haven't started yet because I don't want to pause my physics research. It has also created a Dimensional Portal Researcher specialist job on my planet, which is now filled - it says that job produces 16 physics research but that's not actually happening. So the question is - is that research towards the portal project (even though I haven't started it yet - will it only contribute when I start it?), or bonus physics research that I will only get when the project is completed?

You should receive the production of science, the portal research can lead to multiple options, one I think gives you dark matter, the other says that the portal is dangerous and that you should close it (you can choose to do it or not, in my case I decided not to I did it for fear of losing the free research work and nothing happened to me), I do not rule out that there is another. Try your luck and finish the investigation.
 
My portal researchers produce physics points, but I haven't checked this before completing the special project.

Edit: just got the event. My portal zone produces physics the moment someone takes the job.

The different options I've encountered :

1 - A dimension of suffering : Nothing, and a project to close the portal. I haven't actually tried to see if the project does something other than the obvious closing the portal.
2 - A dimension of energy : Portal jobs now produce energy on top of physics. Get some plasma tech (can't remember if it's full tech or simply a +% to it).
3 - The null void : Portal jobs now produce dark matter on top of physics, and you unlock the null void beam tech (anti shield weapon). Later you get a project to get more dark matter per portal job.
4 - Find an alternate version of your empire, where they have warp FTL, and galactic civilisation is threatened by warp beasts. You open up trade, which give trade and amenities to portal jobs on top of the physic (energy instead of trade for ME).

You want to avoid the first, and are happy if you get either of 3-4. 2 is fine too, but less good.

Closing the portal unlocks tech progress, depending on your empire.

Most empires it's progress to the next technician tech. Not very impressive, but might be worth it for a Gestalt who's struggling to stay in the black.

Empires with the Feudal realms civic get a CKII reference, and mining tech

Spiritualist, however, get the jackpot with that outcome; Special Project gives progress to PSI Theory AND Psionic Barriers, and if I'm reading the event code right, that's even if you haven't gone far enough in Psi ascension to start rummaging in the Shroud for it.

Psionic barriers are a unique tech that is different from the psionic shields from the shroud. They are basically equivalent to a tier 2 shield, except they don't cost any ship power so you can spam any number of them. They are decent, but not game-changing.

Ah.

Still, guaranteed Psi Theory is pretty hard to pass up if Psionic Ascension is your endgoal.
 
Sorry to dredge this old thread but was doing a search and found useful info and needed to clarify.

Psionic Barriers are always short sold as they not only cost the same as Deflectors but have no energy cost, they also recharge at double the rate. I understand that when “finding a Titan” is the standard of how good something is it’s minor, but they really an “above their weight” component to be sure and can be employed for when you need some cheaper spam ships for whatever reason
 
I got the Dimension of Suffering event as a Divine Empire: spiritualist, authoritarian, militarist, my species is Psionic not latent Psionic I chose to close the portal and I got Quantum Field Manipulation another post said you could get Psionic Barriers from closing it and there was a option to pray for a solution I never got that option was I mean't to study the portal maybe someone can explain my mistake cause I kept on getting Quantum Field Manipulation

If you have Psionic Theory, you get an option titled "Perhaps Psionics is the solution?", which is the Psionic prayer option.

I have researched Psionic theory it's the first thing I research when Mind over Matter has been picked for a ascension perk I have researched all the related tech Telepathy, Zro distillation I have received this event more than once and still no option to pray for a solution at the end I got Quantum Field Manipulation when I choose the option to close the portal

I don't know what's going on, but I checked the event file yesterday before I made that post and as far as I can see it is as people have described in this thread and on the wiki.
 
I don't know either when I close the portal it says "Doorway closed" and then "The Portal was determined to be able to handle almost unlimited energy input, but the key word is "almost". By generating energy at an unprecedented scale and continuously bombarding the Portal, it was eventually possible to cause it to overload and collapse in on itself. Needless to say, the generation of vast amounts of energy has the potential to be useful in other areas.

I'm playing the console edition honestly that is what says at the end of the event I have even tried with both perks picked Mind over Matter and Transcendence I have even tried save scumming to get the event again before the autosave kicks in on Ironman mode
