Also I would like (but we dont always get I know :D ) to see some of the Scots last names changed (in accordance with this thread.. http://www.europa-universalis.com/forum/showthread.php?t=189110 )

So from this list in particular...

Aberdeen - Obar Dheathain

Arren- Arainn

Bruce -Brus or Brusach
Buchanan- Bochanan
Cameron -Camshron
Campbell -Caimbeul
Chrishom -Siosal or Siosalach
Douglas -Dughlas
Ferguson- Fearfhasdan and also MacFhearghais
Fraser- Friswal
Johnson- MacIain

MacBeth -MacBheatha
MacCorquodale -MacCorcadail
MacDonald- MacDhomhnaill

MacIntyre- Mac an t-Saoir
MacKay- MacAoidh
MacNeil -MacNeill
MacPhearson- MacPhearsain
Ross- Ros

I know that name places will not be changed, however there could still be changes along these lines, for example Malcolm Dunkeld would have his name changed to Mael Coluim Dunn Chailleann. MacDonald's to MacDhomhnaill and so forth.

The 'of Berwick' could remain as is to not confuse people but I personally would like to see 'o Bearaig' :p

I am sure people would agree with me (and disagree of course).

I second that. It would be great....although the name of the Scottish King sounds a bit too long....don't know if it would fit... :p

Malcolm Dunkeld was perhaps not a good example but it WOULD fit ;)
I had made the changes to my non-beta CK (before my computer crashed) and it works a treat - looks good too. Even with long placenames like the western isles (h-Eillean an Iar or somesuch, will have to check correct spelling :eek:o ). And it is a VAST improvement to the Anglo-mangle at present

Obviously some of the names on that list don't apply. Norway, London, Wales, Brittany, etc.

As far as counties go, though, IIRC most of them are known by their English names, even outside of Scotland. County of Apulia instead of Puglia, for example.

I object. The scottish names are translated to my native language from English, so it will be very difficult for me to recognise many of them.

?? Care to elaborate more? Do you speak Gaelic - if so what would you suggest?

Yes I know, I took the entire list but I was only highlighting FROM the list. Only those provinces which were applicable. Also I wasnt saying that the counties themselves should be changed only those courtiers that have 'of Atholl' and so on. But I recognised that this could cause confusion.

However, I DO wish to see 'family' names changed in line with the Gaelicised first name so 'David Bruce' would become 'Daibhidh Brus' for example.

Sounds reasonable. It's unlikely to happen any time soon, but we could still hope.

In Russian scottish names use english or (when applicable) german equivalents. Recognising Mael Coluim or Daibhidh as Malcolm and David will take some time. However, these names are not the worst (after all, there are plenty of christian names used by every nation). Surnames are much more confusing: from my point of view there is nothing common between, say, Fraser and Friswal.

Well I support the renaming to Gaelic names.

I just love to play with characters whose names I can't pronounce :)

But the gaelic names give a real authentic feeling I think.

I will change them as far as I can in my own game.

OK going through the dynasty.txt and finding all those relating to Scotland I have names for the following....

Dunkeld - Dunn Chailleann

MacDubhSithe - ? (probably keep the same)

So, um there you are - what do people think. Using this as a base I can go through the dynasty file and start a new post with the actual changes (relevent ID's and so on). Then I'll go and tackle changing the Christian names in the 1066 scenario file ;)

Dang forgot a dynasty

MacKintyre - Mac an-t-Saoir (from MacIntyre)

dynasty = {
id = { type = 12 id = 101707 }
name = "Mac an-t-Saoir"
province = { 41 43 }
}

yours
Ayeshteni

EDIT: forgot the Crovan dynasty name...

dynasty = {
id = { type = 12 id = 556 }
name = "Crobhain"
province = { }
}

while it starts norwegian the son (in the court of Scotland) is Scottish. Maybe controversial.

EDIT: Am a little bored tonight, thought I would trawl the web for some good sites relating to this subject...

For those worried about pronouncing names here is a site that helps to pronounce gaelic names. Unfortunately it only gives first names...

Thanks for the names....and to Calcagus for writing them down. ;)

No worries.

The worst of it is that, because modern Scots are mostly Anglophones, it seems acceptable to use English forms ... and this perpetuates it. It has been American and Irish historians who've begun using Gaelic forms. Now the Scots are beginning to follow their lead, but lol ... never thought of how you'd do it in Russian. Native forms are generally better, since then a German, a Russian and an Indian can all be sure they're talking about the same person. But Mael Coluim, Maol Choluim, Melkolf, Malcolumus, Malcolmus and Malcolm are just confusing.

Well, I dunno if the patch people are gonna consider these changes,. In the meantime, can someone explain how to safely do it myself. I've got the part about province.csv. So I know how to alter claim areas. However, I don't know:

1) how to safely create the Duchies of Moray and Alba
(e.g., can I just invent two duchy tags, say, MOIR and ALBA, and can I just copy current COA images, etc)

2) safely scrap the Duchies of Atholl, Mar and Berwick.

3) and do 1) and 2) in reference to the three scenarios (although that prolly would be easy).

Can someone help?
