Just for my own knowledge, is it possible to do a realistic-ish Barbarossa?

I find myself encircling and wiping out upwards of a 100 Sov divisions in the first 6 months, only to see the USSR more than replace double their losses in 3 months according to my intelligence.

I never seem to keep an offensive initiative beyond Winter 41 due to this

How do I get a decent German barbarossa that isn't basically take as much in the first six months and then see how long you can hold it

Well, basically you've just described what Barbarossa was historically all about, and what actually happened in RL. So to answer this question as best as possible: What do YOU want Barbarossa to be?

Let me explain my point a bit better

I don't necessarily WANT to win a war in the East, I just want a more realistic-ish one.

One where I can at least retain the strategic initiative beyond 6 months.

As you've indicated brooksy, a German player isn't going to retain the strategic advantage by force-matching. And I'm guessing I'm not telling you anything you don't already know by suggesting that his best bet therefore lies in movement. Initially at least, that movement is most usefully directed not at destroying large pockets of Russian units but by immobilising them through loss of supply and thus org. Optimal movement should therefore aim at deep penetrations cutting supply to the entire Russian frontline at least one clear province behind it, at dropping off 'placeholders' along the line of advance to thwart break-ins by the relatively weak Russian reinforcements that initially become available, at assembling powerful infantry forces along the shoulders of the penetration to hold these until Russian org breaks down, and at a 'soap bubble' advance by the most advanced units that ropes off new reinforcing units as they present themselves.

That's all do-able with the right force mix, and once it's done the rest is not history.
