Part IV: The Indonesian Campaign (June 1939 - 8th September 1939)

Saruman ordered his troops in New Zealand to close the pocket, and they duly did that.

Perturbed by the Japanese advance in the Dutch East Indies, Saruman decided that with most of the New Zealand forces destroyed, conquering New Zealand could wait. Once the North Island was secure, the Uruk-Hai were ordered to transfer to Darwin and then on to the island of Java instead.

Unfortunately, during this transfer, the Australian Escort Carrier was destroyed! Although this was a blow, the division of Uruk-Hai who were in that fleet survived, and they were more important in the short term at least, and the Carrier was only a prototype model, after all.

The Uruk-Hai invaded the jungle-ridden islands of the East Indies where the Japanese had not yet reached. The Uruk-Hai were almost ashore when a British fleet appeared and started beating up the proud Australian fleet. Somehow we managed to destroy one of their light cruisers, but we lost the pride of our fleet in the process!

The rest of the Australian fleet returned to port to Australian ports to nurse their wounds, as the Uruk-Hai began taking over Java. They wanted to get into Sumatra too, but there was a problem.

"Sire," said the chief of the Indonesian Forces, "we are having trouble invading Sumatra. Our Uruk-Hai cannot cross the strait, due to constant naval forces in the area, mostly due to the forces that are in Sumatra."
"Thanks for reporting this," said Saruman "I'll see what I can do."
Saruman went to his own private office in Orthanc, uttered some sacred words, and sent his mind thousands of miles away to the area in question. He strove around, looking for weak mortal minds that he could bend to his will. Eventually he found some, and he bade them do his bidding.

It was time for Saruman to use more of his magical abilities to aid the troops. First he uttered some words to increase the coffers of the Australians.

No idea what happened here.

Secondly he cast a spell known only as "console assigncontroller" to gain two seemingly worthless territories, that he knew held magical powers.

Leadership is a major issue for Australia's ambitions, if I can use this little bit of magic to help then so be it! This is probably going to be the limit of using console to help me out directly.

Meanwhile, news from Europe suggested that Hitler had this great idea to avoid the Magniot line by going through Netherlands and Belgium, but after a while he took leave of his senses and got bored with that plan, so attacked the Magniot line as well.

Back in the Far East, the Japanese - finally - after sitting outside Singapore for over a month, decided to march in to it and take it.

Come early September, it was time for a round-up with the various heads of departments.
"OK, foreign affairs minister, what's going on in Europe?"
"Well sire, Germany has defeated France and has begun to invade Norway, as these military intelligence reports show."

jhbtyq.png

"Excellent. Now then, Chief of Staff, can you give me an update on the situation in Indonesia and Malaysia?"
"Yessir, this picture gives a good overview."

14y33pv.png

"Very good. Now then, minister of trade, can you tell me what the implications of our Indonesian conquests are?"
"Of course. We have implemented a military government in order to make the most of the resources present. The quantity of rare materials there are immense - enough to power 61 factories - so we have cancelled all our deals which brought us these resources from abroad. This has meant we have cut our supply for cash exports too, freeing up more factories for producing war materials. Finally the islands also give us enough metal/energy to run 1-2 factories, not much but it helps."
"Excellent, excellent! This leads into an update from our minister of industry...."
"Well sir," began the minister, "our two latest factories have completed construction, and two more have begun, which we are hoping to finish in a year. Together with our research into industrial output, and the extra capacity that Japan have given us entirely of their free will...."
"Yes that's right, no use of my mental powers was involved in that at all...."
"...yessir, I wouldn't dream of suggesting that.... as I was saying, as a result of these things our industrial output is quite impressive considering where we were a few years ago, but we shall not rest on our laurels yet, more industrial research and more factories shall be constructed."
"I am glad to hear it - though I fear the time of factory-building may be drawing to a slow close. I shall keep you up to date with my orders on this. Well, unless anyone else has anything pressing to tell me, I will call this meeting to a cl..."
At this point a hurried messenger came running through the door.
"Sir! Sir! The Americans have made a speech declaring an Unlimited National Emergency!"

"That is a surprise. I didn't think the Americans would feel so threatened by the Germans at this stage."
"Sir, you are right... they aren't!"
"Then.... who ARE they threatened by?"
"Sir... it's.... us!"

Not to worry, Germany will soon draw their attention again, I think...
I guess Amsterdam fell and the Dutch capital moved to the East Indies, then you captured that, taking their supplies, which are now being funneled into your system.
There could be 1 small problem now though. I believe Japan doesn't take French Indochina and puppet Siam if they are already at war. Which seriously hampers any invasion into India.

I probably should've mentioned, they have already taken Indochina (after Fall of France) and puppeted Siam. :)

Ohh excellent, in that case it's all fine :) For Isengard!

Gandalf in charge of America... sounds like another AAR in the making! Nice image though, made me smile :)

I've played through to Feb 1940 and am writing it up at the moment. It's all rather different to my last playthrough, when I wasn't at war with the allies until Pearl Harbour, I think. Then I had a decent navy as it was a couple of years down the line, whereas now I'm having to make do with running & hiding with my dilapidated outdated excuse for a fleet....

Question about IC.... I am showing 34 base IC, which in a way is OK as that's how many are in native Australian lands (I started with 30 and have built 4). However I have 6 or 7 IC in occupied lands that are under military rule (-80% IC) - shouldn't these captured factories mean that my base IC should now be showing 35?

Well, let's say it's 6 IC, with an -80% modifier, so that's 1.2.

But, and I might be wrong here, but I'm fairly sure that overseas territories give you less IC.

What I'd do is load up a save before you conquered all the overseas locations, check the total IC in your production (it gives you decimals so you can check for smaller changes in the 0.01 range). Then compare it to your current save and check the difference. There'll be something. If you still have an old save, anyway.

*raises thread from the dead*

I played a lot more of this game and I found it very interesting! However I find it a lot of effort to write-up in character, so I will go on with a more functional prose as I think the experience of the game is worth sharing... so will go for the way that is least effort for me :) I'll leave gaps of a few days between days for people to comment. I'll do the next post in the next few days and each one will cover roughly 3-6 months.

Reactions:
Part V : 8th September 1939 to 6th February 1940 - Islands and Mainlands

Main update : The war against New Zealand was completed. Saruman was pleased with this - he had always felt a certain affinity with the country for reasons he couldn't quite put his finger on. Some cavalry were left on the islands to dissuade any rebellions. The Uruk-Hai went on some island-hopping exercises, putting the flag of Australia up on various Pacific Islands owned by the decadent Alies.

Meanwhile the Japanese had really taken up their role as German's allies, attacking British interests in Asia both via the recently-puppeted Siam and via an audacious amphibious assault in western India. Saruman was displeased with this - he wanted some of this land as his, the Japanese had northern Asia, why couldn't he have southern Asia? The troops were quickly moved to grab what they could. They overwhelmed the British garrison in Rangoon and claimed southern Burma for their own, even as the Japanese swept over northern Burma. Next came Ceylon, which put up little resistance. As February started they hopped back board, and dodging enemy patrols, stormed southern India, racing the Japanese troops who had already taken over most of the colony.

The state of play in Southern Asia

World affairs : France fell to the Germans. However after more than 6 months of fighting, the Norwegians still held out from the Germans, thanks largely to their terrible invasion plans. The Molotov-Ribbentrop treaty was never signed (to remind you - WW2 was started in April 1939 by the UK declaring on Germany), so Germany held all of Poland as well as having military access rights in the Baltics. Russia was still battling the stubborn Finns in the Winter War.

Navy plans : 1 aircraft carrier is half done, and a new one has been ordered. With a practical of 2.0 they are pretty expensive but this will get better in time. CAG's under construction via German licensing, as are light cruisers.

Other construction in progress : Goblins (aka infantry), some rocket artillery and some anti-tank & 2nd light armour on license from the Germans, the first having recently finished.

Key stats : IC 0/34/61, two IC's under construction, practical 3.4. Leadership 9.35. 41 brigades

My my, it lives! Some nice outposts you have there.
Norway is always a problem for the Germans if they dont land in the south near Oslo. Japan is kicking ass and taking names across the continent, wonderful.
I wonder wether the Uruk-Hai can assist the Italians by attacking the Middle East, or secure the southern approaches of the Indian Ocean by eliminating South Africa?......

Some interesting ideas! Let's see how things turn out!

Also - good news, I found I took a load of screenshots back when I played this period, so here are some of them....

Ah, just the one battleship! Maybe we damaged it a bit.

Meanwhile in Europe, what's going on?! Greece appear to be invading the now-German Yugoslavia! Hitler doesn't look too please about this...

Ouch, my so-called Navy took a battering at some point, but is still mostly intact. Rangoon has a very high-level port, so the crews of the ships became rather familiar with the city over the years.

The battle for Ceylon was bloody and long against the well-drilled UK troops, but eventually Saruman's Uruk-Hai prevailed. There was also another battle later on, with similar losses, as the Brits sought to hold on to the island.
