Don't know about Jains but leaning towards they shouldn't and Buddhists absolutely should.

Relocalize the name and description, and maybe change the little picture (if you want to go that far) to something that is, thematically, more appropriate but with the same exact gameplay effect for non-proselytizing religions (since being completely unable to convert any of your counties's religions would be very detrimental for gameplay), satisfying both camps.

European, Uralic, Altaic, and African pagans all have the same exact issue.

Didn't the Hindus spread by missionaries throughout the Malaysian area and those other corridor like island chains?

Eh, chalk it down to gameplay > accuracy.

This doesn't make sense to me, if anything Buddhism is slightly weaker of the three religions and being the only or major proselytizer should be a good advantage, Hindus are already very strong

They have strong penalties to prosyletize each other.

Erh, that's regular conversion, I'm talking about conerting foreign realms via missionaries, something Hindus didn't do

more through osmosis, also off map

It's still proselytization.

It's still off map :p also happened slowly over hundreds of years and not like how Christians would send missionaries, but like Indian Culture became dominant in these regions

If Jains can have a holy order, Hindus proselytizing isn't really that absurd.

Jains banding together to defend themselves isn't insane, Hindus NEVER tried converting foreigners.

From my understanding, no. Hindu missionaries are not missionaries in the Christian sense; they don't go to foreign lands to proselytize/evangelize (well, there may be a little of that in some isolated cases in the modern period, but that's a modern phenomenon and very rare, as I understand it), they go to foreign lands to administer to the Hindu diaspora. Hinduism didn't spread to Southeast Asia/Polynesia in the sense that Christianity/Islam spread to other regions; they didn't convert to Hinduism so much as the Indian culture was the dominant culture in a process of syncretism due to Indian cultural capital and political dominance in the region. I don't look at it as Southeast Asia/Polynesia converting to Hinduism, but their own ethnic religions being influenced by Hindu religion to such an extent that they now fit into the broad spiritual framework of Hinduism. It was rather more like the spread of Hellenic or Roman religion than it was Christianization.

Of course, take everything I say with a grain of salt since I'm no expert on the topic and haven't researched it extensively.

What would be interesting is if the Hindu missionary job was actually to culture convert, and then Indian culture provinces had a random chance of converting to an Indian religion.

You do realize that it's a religion where they don't even eat yogurt because they might hurt some bacteria, right?

They also think defending yourself is okay.

This is a curious idea but it would be weird to see Afghanistan becoming Bengali

Meh, the culture convert random event is already so fast that you can see things like all of Britain becoming Persian, or Africa turning Mongol, or whatever else, in only about 100-200 years. This would just speed it up somewhat in exchange for not being able to convert religion as fast.

Insane religious conversion speeds (for most religions) are also hilarious. Easily convert all of India to Christianity or Islam in 10-20 years of rule, assuming decent MA. As crazy as it is to see "Bengali Afghanistan" it's just as crazy to see Hindu Jerusalem.

I'd prefer neither.
