The Year of 1913

Onorata Societa

Wishing to gain more legitimate sources of income for the Onorata Societa, the Madame sponsors the acquisition of pawn shops across Manhattan. This leads to a greater income to the OS, to the Madame and one that is somewhat legitimate at that.

In a tactical decision, the OS moves out of Hell's Kitchen en masse and relocates it's resources for use elsewhere in Manhattan. The result of this shift of focus is the return of Spanish Harlem to the Societa sphere while the OS' control of the Italian communities in Brooklyn and the Bronx strengthens.

Seeing large Italian (and more specifically Sicilian) communities outside of New York City, the Madame makes contact with the Philadelphia Mafia headed by Salvatore Sabella. While nothing specific is discussed besides the idea of further cooperation, the idea of a larger Sicilian crime syndicate starts to come to the fore.

The Free Association of Lawmen

Resorting to more primitive and cheap ways to connect with the community, such as potlucks and block parties, the FAL continues its move to become connected to the community. Highly successful and rather cheap, the Queens Police and the people of Queens are the most interconnected in New York, with the community supportive of their officers and the officers protective of their community.

The Jewish Mafia

Meyer forms Levinsky & Co, a umbrella company dedicated to making alot of money for it's stockholders. Using his personal funds, 'donations', and easily gained loans he manages to secure a series of restaurants in Brooklyn, a canning factory outside the Bronx, a warehouse in Hell's Kitchen and 4 motels in Manhattan. All of which are expected to show a profit by the next year.

The Kellys

Brian makes a bold and decisive speech to his workers at his new factory outside of Tompkinsville. Declaring that "they will continue to try to make profits from the automotive production and arms manufacturing/importation" it turns out to be a huge success. It's almost like god rolled a six and had to create something from nothing. However the end result was a noticeable increase in profits for the silvertongued Irishman.

2nd of September Movement

Achilles Greco, in his glorious plan of communist equality, holds a "Revolutionary Bake Sale". Making red cookies in the shape of Marx and stars it turns out to be a surprising success. This is mostly due to the fact that the workers thought they were American stars and pictures of President Grant. Overall he makes about 1000 bucks over the course of the entire year. However this is the only good news of the year.

He then sends 2000 to Engels, which is lucky, since he is robbed by John Ainsworth later that day and raided and detained by the police later that week.

Ainsworth Gang

Ainsworth, deciding that Greco isn't worth his time, conducts a robbery. Using a steel pipe, he kills one of the thugs by cracking his head open and steals 4,000 from the 2nd of September movement alongside another within the group.

Creating his own family, it is unknown where Ainsworth will go from here.

Republican Progressives

Charles L. Nash is first recorded as working Kenyon & Keynon, a local law firm.

However just because he is new does not mean that he is inactive, as he holds a series of soirees at his abode on behalf of the Bull Moose Party. Quiet since the focus of the party has turned more national, many are hopeful that this year is the beginning of many a new successes.

Tammany Hall

John Myborough spends the year socialising properly, buying gifts for people that are dictated by the God Maker and not their own desires. Buying the Manhattan Police Chief's children some high quality toys and gifting a car to the chief of Hell's Kitchen. He makes friends with both men and can most likely count on them in a limited way.

Myborough then begins a new campaign in Manhattan. After repositioning his men from Spanish Harlem to Broadway and Times Square, he leads a daring raid on the "Achilles Heel" weapons factory. Successfully arresting the owner, Achilles Greco, for patent violations, he puts the factory on sale via auction the day after its seizure. Telling only Vissers, he sells it for exactly 1$, with 100% profit. Overall Greco has a bad day, Vissers a new factory and Myborough that much richer.

Ukrainian Mafia

Simon pays off an art dealer, whom patronises Molarsky's work and manages to get it into the Armoury Show. It ends up well, with his painting selling for a tidy profit. However the amount comes out to roughly the same as the bribe, ending with the only difference after the whole episode being Molarsky being a little more famous.

After an agreement with Woolworth, they open a store in Tompkinsville and hire some of the citizens for a minimum wage. However this backfires in two ways, as the Ukrainians, who expected to be protected by the union, see them sold like cattle to auction for a price they had to pay. Uncomfortable with the agreements made for them the Woolworth workers go on strike. As well, Woolworth doesn't particularly care, hiring Italians from outside of Tompkinsville. The result of the entrance of a Woolsworth 5 and dime store is that it outcompetes all the local minute stores and puts them out of business. This results in a minor economic slump in the slum, due to a lack of jobs and income.

Simon uses this unemployment to his advantage, and hires many youths to act as pickpockets and thugs to New York City's many Metro stations. This provides a large source of income for the Ukrainian Mafia, however he must be careful. Not only is it dangerous due to his activity on many other gang's "turf", but the large stream of Ukrainian youths everyday into the Metro is an obvious find to both the police and the gangs they're trespassing on.

Vissers Incorporated

Vissers manages to buy the old "Achilles" arms factory for 1$ in a semi-private auction and sends a 3,000$ 'birthday gift' to Myborough soon afterwords. Spending 20,000 on expansion and hiring, Vissers manages to make the factory the largest of its kind in New England. With enough workers to begin production, Vissers spends 2,000 on design and testing of both a new rifle and a new light machine gun in the style of the M1909 Hotchkiss LMG. While the rifle goes no where, he manages to hit on an idea for an LMG, a patents the Vissers M1913 Light Machine Gun. The first of its kind designed in the United States, by the end of the year members of the American Armed Forces approached Vissers about theoretical future contracts on the matter

madsen1914w.jpg

Vissers M1913 Light Machine Gun

Seeing that the United States has taken an interest, Vissers sends messages to army contacts throughout Western Europe. It is mostly a failure, as France, Germany and Great Britain all have domestic armouries producing machine guns which they have contracts with. However notices from Portugal and Greece are received citing interest in his gun.

With all this business happening, he has very little time for any other activities, managing only to hire some more guards to protect his factory.

The Engels Family

Joseph Engels gets paid 2,000 by Greco to run an ad for the Achilles factory in his 'paper'. However he finds out later that week that Greco was arrested and the factory seized, resulting in him simply pocketing the cash.

The 1913 Elections

Election season takes New York City by storm as a flurry of political activity occurs across the City that never sleeps. Mayoral candidate Edward Ludwig travels to Tammany strongholds, securing vote promises from people their and establishing a friendship with many people there. As well Ludwig makes ample use of his warchest, spending it on events and media cover.

All this happens while Brian Kelly curries favour with "the political elite", which works well. With large connections with these shadowy "elite", many in Manhattan don't know what to expect from this man from the Emerald Isle.

Meanwhile in Queens, Hohlenberg addresses the papers of New York City about the state of municipal elections. Declaring that he wishes only for a politician that supports the cause of liberty and law, many read between the lines of this as an endorsement by him (and the FAL as a result) of local Fusion-Independent law and order contender Richard Mulligan.

Hohlenberg then continues his address, lambasting City Government for refusing to expand funding to the Queens branch of the NYPD. Citing political partisanship as the main reason for this denial of funding, he get listeners in Queens, who are now confused as to why perhaps the most successful portion of the NYPD is denied more funding to continue doing their job. Between this and his veiled support of the Fusion vote, Hohlenbergs seems to many to be railing against Tammany Hall and it's control over both the NYPD and City Hall.

Also in Queens Engels tries to merge the SPPA with the SPA. The end result was Engels literally being laughed out of the political headquarters of the SPA, as a party with 4 official members is not important enough (or even that legitimate) to result in anything.

Seemingly to prove them wrong Engels tries to gather some steam by conducting an election campaign. However this does not go well, as he just talks to walking crowds that ignore him. Defeated he goes on with life.

Also of note was Jan Bereksohn, a Polish Jew and known businessman centred in Richmond declared his intention to run for the Presidency of the Aldermen. Simon Mogilivich, leader of the infamous Tompkinsville slum, also runs for political office in Richmond, but for him he runs for the Borough Presidency.

Election day itself is a flurry of activity, with lines recorded at every polling station in the city. With such a turnout, the results were both a mix of surprise and expected results. In Richmond Bereksohn's Tammany connections easily nab him the position as President of the Board of Aldermen. However a surprise victory occurs for Simon Mogilivich after support from noted businessmen Kelly and Vissers as well as Police Commissioner Myborough give the man legitimacy in the eyes of many in the borough. Simon is the first Ukrainian elected to public office in New England.

In Brooklyn and the Bronx, both Presidencies are captured by Tammany candidates, surprising no one and expected by all observers with the only thing of note in either being a large number of police voting for Fusion in Brooklyn. In Queens there is outrage at city hall when Maurice E. Connolly, Democrat and Tammany stooge is elected to the borough presidency by a single vote. Numerous recounts all result in the same result, as it is declared that Tammany takes the Borough by a single vote.

The most interesting by far was Manhattan, as Fusion and Tammany voters make a desperate effort to defeat each other. It seemed at one moment that the Fusion vote had clinched the seat, as the Italian vote comes in en masse for Fusion and against Tammany. However at the end of the day, after work for most of the poorer communities, the immigrants started filing in. Armenians, French, Brits, Spaniards and Germans as a block begin voting, heavily in favour for the Tammany. The death knell for the entire movement comes when the Irish vote supports Tammany.

As the mayoral votes come in, the result is clear, as Edward Ludwig is the newest mayor of the state. Riding on a wave of optimism and immigrant favour, Tammany once again secures the city's politics, if once again by a lesser margin.

For the the gubernatorial election, the year begins with Meyer Levinsky travelling the state meeting prominent businessmen and politicians from Syracuse and Albany to New York City, securing friendly bonds with many of them. As well he holds large potlucks in smaller towns, connecting with villages across the state like that.

Between this and the full force of the Democratic Party powering his campaign, Meyer easily wins his election to become the 40th Governor of New York State. However it is of note that both the Prohibition and Independence votes saw increases at the expense of Republican Party. For the Socialist factions it is seen that the vote is split evenly between the SPA and SPLA, further dooming the socialist cause in the New York state legislature for another year.

Other

Yutke Zacharian tries to gain influence within the SPPA by making speeches in Manhattan on behalf of the party. He is successful, as after his speeches he manages to convince 4 men of somewhat unavailable intelligence to join the party, allowing him to become 4th in a party of 8 people.

He the tries to organise a charity using funds gained from Myborough. However he was not given any funds by Myborough, and perhaps should organise such activities better in the future. Instead he wanders through Hell's Kitchen with 20 fairly unimpressed thugs demanding protection money from storeowners. These storeowners, armed and organised due to Myborough's citizen's watch efforts earlier, fight back. This results in the death of one of the thugs, a pair of brothers that owned a bar in Hell's Kitchen. While running for his life he tells the citizens that he was working for Myborough, which confuses and angers the storeowners (whom he unofficially trained to protect themselves from such nonsense) and now they demand answers.

Ehlers, newly promoted to Police Chief of Brooklyn, takes to his job with determination, managing to make statistically relevant changes to the crime rate of the borough.

Ehlers then expands his contact network with the underworld. To his luck he makes some highly lucrative contacts within Brooklyn, much to his future benefit.

The Year of 1914

Onorata Societa

Wishing to gain more influence within City politics, the Madame sends a man to converse with the Assistant Secretary of the Treasury, Mr Albert Conolo, trying to sway him to the OS. A quiet and honest man, Conolo wants no trouble and rejects the man. The man, not wanting the wrath of the Madame, attempts to bribe him, but is arrested by a nearby policeman after being notified by the terrified Conolo. Wanting only to be left alone, Conolo resigns from his position. However this is the first arrest in over 5 years concerning the issues of bribing an elected official, and the public is wondering how deep the rabbithole goes.

Digging deeper, an independent detective finds out that the Zoning Commission of Manhattan is completely riddled with corruption. Building a solid case and presenting it to the DA, the entire commission is arrested for corruption, bribery and misuse of public funds. This hurts the Societa, as any use of the Zoning Commission is now gone.

Seeing the expansion of OS territory, the Societa then decides to once again begin recruiting. Smuggling weapons through their various connections, they manage to arm another 30 armed thugs and recruit enough men to replace them on the streets as standard thugs. Thanks to their connections the price of the recruitment effort was lower then average.

The Free Association of Lawmen

Seeking to not entirely dedicate his life to the cause of Justice, Hohlenberg marries a quiet German girl from Bavaria named Eda.

Understandably upset with the expansion of Communism in his borough, Hohlenberg engages in an "investigation". Really just sending half a dozen men into the small office that was the Word of the Worker and "investigated" it. After seizing everything that could be carried and destroying everything that wasn't, the men left, taking along with them 2 of Engel's "security guards" that sought to resist arrest.

Seeking to expand on the formula developed in Queens, the FAL engages in thrifty community outreach programs in their branches of Brooklyn and Bronx. The overall effect is a positive one, as men and women start to appreciate the FAL in these boroughs as they do in Queens.

The Jewish Mafia

Meyer uses his influence to bring various supporters of his into important positions within the state structure of New York. Through the careful manipulation of allies and enemies, close compatriots were placed into the positions of New York State Treasurer, State Auditor and the Head of the Department of Taxation. However such blatant nepotism was not overlooked, as the various enemies of the Democratic Party begin paying close attention to the actions of Meyer.

The news first broke November, when a lifelong bureaucrat Howard Kepp discovered the papers of Menachem Shamir, a 35 year old man whose documents only start that year. Looking farther into the man, it is found that his account is receiving large amounts of funds from the Department of Taxation and State Treasurer which was hidden within various miscellaneous details in the budgets. Putting 2 and 2 together, Kepp goes to the State Auditor, who seizes the documentation and buries it. However he was too slow, as Kepp already contacted the New York Times about Financial Mismanagement within the State. Without naming anyone, it seems to hint and misuse of finances by Governor Levinsky. By January of the New Year the scandal is in full force, with the state legislature threatening to impeach him.

However year for Levinsky & Co. goes much better, as the company makes expansive and aggressive expansions throughout the city. The company builds another 6 motels, 3 restaurants, 3 warehouses and a canning factory, all of which show large profit margins.

Jan Bereksohn fails to make any progress this year, as Tammany holds all real political power within the city and attempts to promote men loyal to Levinsky results only in a distancing, as even Tammany attempts to ward off catching the scandal that is effecting Meyer.

The Kellys

Brian attempts to raise his appeal to the masses by engaging in populism, publically giving to charity and clothing cold citizen. It works, as bread in circuses usually keep the mob happy for a time.

Brian then expands his armaments factory in Tompkinsville (most likely due to competition from both Colt and Vissers) as giving his men a pay raise of 1$. This large raise makes Kelly beloved by the community for being the first of many to bring work into the community and those unemployed by Woolsworth begin working for the Irishman.

2nd of September Movement

Achilles Greco attempts to contact his fellow comrades in jail and organise a breakout. While there is a gathering of communists within the jail (due to police crackdowns over the last 3 years) there is not enough for a break out. Instead they stage a riot, which results in some minor damage to public property and a sense of victory as the battered and beaten communists return to their cells for a longer sentence then before.

He tried to send a letter to his men, however the officer that read the letter (as all prisoner mail is) finds the sentence “KILL JOHN AINSWORTH” repeated over 100 times. Seeing that this is illegal, the letter is put away as further evidence of Greco’s violence and nothing else happens.

Ainsworth Gang

Ainsworth then sends 1,000$ to a prison guard to poison Greco. Deciding that is far too hard, the guard simply beats Greco to death citing the prisoner assaulted him. So ends the life of Achilles Greco.

However attempts to recruit former members of the 2nd of September Movement results in violence, as they assault Ainsworth’s thug representative. Down a man and without the support of the Movement, Ainsworth is on his own.

Tammany Hall

Mayor Ludwig, becoming known as a true populist, continues his charitable work, this time using his power as Mayor to have them work as successfully as possible. Targeting slums in the Bronx, Richmond and Manhattan, the city injects large amounts of money. Building new tenements to house the poor, new plazas and parks to replace abandoned buildings, and rebuilding the roads, these slums experience growth for the first time in years. With his name attached to the program, Ludwig is becoming one of the most important men in the city.

Ludwig then gambles in stocks, buying cheap steel stocks that had been holding for years. However with the start of WWI his stocks begin to rise.

Johnny Eagle expands to include a new branch, those of industrial goods. Eagle Co. Industrial quickly establishing a factory dedicated to producing industrial cleaners and solvents, finding a booming market in the city’s many factories. Due to the large need of these goods without a dedicated provider, Johnny Eagle makes money hand over fist, easily recouping the 38,000$ they spent in the first year.

Myborough then continues his campaign of establishing neighbourhood watches. Functionally street militias, usually headed by a retired officer, these men become an extremely valuable first line of defense for the communities they exist in (mostly Manhattan, Richmond and the Bronx). However an unexpected outcome of these defense watches is both political outcry at the arming of the public by the police department and the rise of vigilante actions as well as deaths, as would be robbers frequently find themselves beset by three or four men armed with clubs or rods who then beat the felon to death.

Also noted is the upkeep of hours for detectives in Manhattan, although what they spend all their time doing is unknown as of now.

Ukrainian Mafia

Jumping onto Ludwig Rejuvenation Project, Mogilivich (as Borough President of Richmond) manages to convince the majority of the other members of the Board to release 38,000$ to Vissers to create a factory in Tompkinsville. This subsidy allows Vissers to build the factory for less than expected and further lowers the unemployment of the slum to 0, reclassifying the slum into a simple enclave.

Spending 2,000$, Mogilivich creates a fund dedicated to the immigration of Ukrainians from the Homeland to New York City on behalf of the AUA. Due to his efforts the Richmond Enclave reaches 2,500 people and the Brooklyn enclave 1,000 people.

Vissers Incorporated

Vissers, using the city subsidy, builds a cigarette factory in Tompkinsville for 11,000$. He utilises the existent union to promote the factory as a safe place for the worker, allowing him to fill up the factory’s floors with workers. Spending a further 10,000$, he markets his brand (Juliana) as a patriotic way to smoke to the rich of Richmond. Though it didn’t take with them (preferring more in style Egyptian tobacco to Vissers’ Virginian tobacco, it takes with immigrant communities, which see it as an easy way to be pro-American.

Seeing that the United States has taken an interest, Vissers signs a deal with the American Army to provide them with the Vissers M1913 LMG. Quickly overwhelming his production, Vissers is swimming in dough.

However attempts to invest in Manhattan are shut down due to Levinsky’s aggressive expansion in the region, leaving Vissers hanging in the wind.

The Engels Family

Joseph, seeing the police destroy his stuff and arrest 2 of his men, hires three more thugs. This is hopefully to protect him from further attacks.

He then spends the rest of his money rebuilding the Newspaper and buying a new press for it.

The 1914 Tompkinsville Riot

After denying the Ukrainian workers a union and then importing Italian scabs from elsewhere in Richmond, the Ukrainian Worker’s Union was understandably pissed. It didn’t help that both Vissers and Kelly (uncharacteristically to the style of working in the nation) allowed the union in. When Mogilivich gave the nod to react against Woolsworth, the Union reacted indeed. Beginning with simply assaulting the workers, police were called into to calm the situation. However this was not to be, as the union seemingly declared on Woolsworth, breaking the police lines and firebombing the building with homemade bombs. The riots then spread throughout the enclave, as the leadership, the Mafia were seemingly unable to control the mob. Moving downtown, the mob caught sight of Kelly’s armament factory. Moving towards it, the mob began to destroy the storage area and loot it before moving onto the factory itself. To his benefit, Kelly’s workers liked him and their jobs, and took up (sometimes very recently or half made) arms against the mob, engaging in open fighting. Not expecting guns, the mob broke into a rout, which trampled and killed 3 men and a woman within the mob.

The result of this was 12 dead, 83 injured and 100,000$ in damage. Woolsworth declared the UWU an illegal entity and sought the help of the police, Tammany Hall, the state and the federal government to act against the union that destroyed so much. What the these bodies will say is currently up to dispute

I would like to thank all those who have tirelessly worked on what is being affectionately called The Ludwig Rejuvenation Project as we fight to combat poverty in the Bronx, Richmond and Manhattan. With new tenements to house those less well off, new plazas and parks to replace abandoned buildings and thus reducing the eyesore that is urban blight and rebuilding the roads to improve local infrastructure these areas are experiencing growth and some daresay a sense of prosperity. Truly a job well done, however, we must keep up the good work for our duty and obligation to the people of this great city never ceases. In light of the scandal of corruption within the Zoning Commission of Manhattan I will personally see to it that a new Commissioner is selected to lead the now barren Zoning Commission. Once selected he will appoint the rest of group. Lastly, it is high time the NYPD received more funding to end this practice of arming citizens to conduct the duty that is expressly reserved to our finest.

((You know the drill, when these come up you send me a vote via PM WITH YOUR ORDERS and it'll be resolved in the update))

Get yourself a large heavy-bottomed saucepan, and place it on a medium heat. Add a good lug of olive oil and gently fry your bacon until golden and crisp, then reduce the heat slightly and add your onions, carrots, celery and garlic. Next remove the leaves from the Rosemary sprigs and add them to the pot, discarding the sprigs. Move everything around and fry for around 8-10 minutes until the veg has softened.

That part shouldn't be too difficult. Al dente cooking was running in his veins after all. The familial tradition pretended that it was his great-great-grandfather who invented this typical cooking method. The deeply mourned Marcello Antipasti was claimed to have been a master cook.

Next, increase the heat slightly, add the mince and stir until the meat is browned all over.

Brown, brown. All those stereotypes were starting to get to him. He was Sicilian and maybe a bit tanned, not brown.

Stir in your tins of plum/chopped tomatoes, (plum tomatoes are best as they contain less water, but either will turn out great!). Add your remaining herbs, tomato puree, stock cube, chilli and if using, the wine. Slice your cherry tomatoes in half and throw them in aswell.

Oh no, where would he get cherry tomatoes? He was forced to replace them with regular tomatoes, that was the only way. Hopefully it wouldn't get noticed.

Give everything a stir with a wooden spoon, breaking up the plum tomatoes as you go and bring to a gentle simmer. Reduce the heat to low-medium, put the lid on and leave it blipping away for about an hour and 15 minutes until the flavours develop into a wonderfully rich tomatoey sauce. Stir occasionally to make sure it doesn't catch.

Stiring gets tiring. And boring.

Just as the sauce is nearly ready, Add the parmesan and season to taste. Meanwhile add salt to a pan of boiling water and cook the spaghetti according the the packet instructions. Once the spaghetti is ready, drain it in a colander and add it to the pan with the sauce. Give it all a good stir, coating the pasta in the lovely tomato sauce. Serve with a little grated parmesan and use the extra basil leaves to make a great little garnish. Beautiful!

Finally, it was done. The whole family would like it, he knew it !

Birth Year: 1900
Culture: Sicilian
Field: Criminal

Biography: Comes from a family with old mafiosi connections. His father was an Onorata society capo, killed during a police raid. Dropping from school rather early, Tom became a street wiseguy and Onorata associate, participating in many criminal operations. He loansharked, robbed, extorted - and always tried to invent new ways to enrich himsels at the expense of his victims. He believes in the values of the Cosa Nostra and is loyal to the society - even if, in his heart, he has certain reservations about it violating important mafiosi rules, such as letting a woman run the family and having an Irishmen as an underboss. Still, he keeps them to himself.

Currently he run a small gang within a society, at the same time owning a bar.

Family: Onorata

((May I suggest to the Boss of the Onorata Society to appoint a certain administration, be it PC or NPC, and give each of its members a certain rank within it? In a typical Cosa Nostra mob it would be a boss, an underboss, consiglieri, some capos running crews, then "made guys" or "soldiers" that the crews consist of - and common associates that work for the family, but are not considered its members.

I think that we have quite a big number of Onorata players, and for RP purposes it could be interesting to set such a structure!))
