I've noticed that the AI colonizes much faster than I do. The AI can often colonize two provinces while I can do only one. Is there a way to increase colonization speed or is it intended for the AI to colonize faster?

Me too. AFAIR there are some techs/decisions increasing colonizations speeds but it may also be affected by politics or country setup.
This is what they changed. Before there was no way of changing how fast you colonize.
During the first few versions of Vic2 you could use you military to speed up your colonization, but that was removed later since the AI couldn't handle it. It was reintroduced in AHD and now the AI can use it, and probably did in your case.
