((Holy crap, I go out drinking with my mates and when I come back I find that Vertucci's support has completely dissolved! Politics moves so damn fast!))

Well the fall of Vertucci was certainly fast gentlemen, and now Soukup-Valenta seems set to win this election. I must ask that Soukup-Valenta give a statement on his views on monarchies, as that seems to be a potentially divisive topic that could result in much unpleasantness if handled incorrectly. As far as I am aware, Herr Soukup-Valenta does not seek to abolish monarchies, nor persecute those who support them. If he could confirm this I believe that much of the existing fears may be dealt with.

Ritter Ervin von Braunschweig, Freiherr von Durz

ErvinvonBraunschweighead_zps8298b6da.jpg

Date of Birth: 27 April 1841
Place of Birth: Königsberg, Preußen
Culture: Albanian
Position: Baron of Durrës/Durz, Knight of the Teutonic Order, Councillor for Albania

Early life
Son to a Prussian general and a Christian Albanian mother, Ervin von Braunschweig was raised with two different heritages. No, three different heritages, as his busy father and lousy mother sent the boy away to be an apprentice of the revolutionary writer Wolfram Liberalen when Ervin was only 13 years old. Wolfram would teach the boy all about history, politics, and specifically the Danubian Revolution.
In 1855, the pro-Danubian General von Braunschweig (Sr.) and his wife were shot on the account of treason. Officially, a letter from father to son contained too much sensitive information. Unofficially, after the alliance between the Federation and Prussia was cancelled, there was no more need for a sentimental general like Von Braunschweig, and an execution was a simple way to get rid of him. Young Ervin was grieved by the loss of his father, whom he had barely known, yet his bond with Wolfram only grew stronger.

Military education
When his mentor was elected Hochmeister of the Teutonic Order, Ervin started military training. Unlike his mentor, and like his father, he wanted to join, and perhaps once command an army. It seemed he had a keen mind for strategy, and in 1858 the 17-year old Ervin von Braunschweig entered the Wiener Militärakademie. Von Braunschweig graduated a year and a half later and officially became a Colonel of the Cavalry in the Southern Armies. He had deliberately been placed there because of his Albanian background.

The Storm at Durz
On December 23rd, 1859, the Muslim regent of Durrës blocked the city, and its important port, for all trade until the Albanian culture would be equal to others, and Albania had required full statehood. Regardless of the validity of the regent’s protest, the situation was potentially dangerous and had to be defused at once. In a display of authority and courage, Von Braunschweig ordered his cavalry to charge through the gates and overpower the city guards. Had things gone wrong, the Colonel would most likely have been shot for acting without explicit orders. As things were, though, the cavalry managed to take the city from the perplexed guards without any casualties on either side, and the regent was disposed of. Ervin von Braunschweig was appointed as the new Baron of Durz, which, along with the rest of Albania, was to become a fully integrated part of the Danubian Federation.

Early Political Life
In the light of the new Baron of Durz' admission to politics as Chancellor of Albania, he was invited for a chat at the Teutonic Order's headquarters. During his life, Ervin had been closely tied to the Teutonic Order, of which his mentor was the Hochmeister. It was only now that the Order deemed him responsible and worthy enough to join, and the Baron of Durz was officially inaugurated as Ritter.
Only a year later, Von Braunschweig joined the Social Democrat Party. As a prominent member of the Teutonic Order, he was concerned with the welfare of every single living soul in God's kingdom, rich or poor, worker or banker. Socialism was still in its early stage, though, and its policies were far from perfected. Neither the Radicals, nor mentor Liberalen decided to support the SDP at this time.

((Damn, you went all out on your character Gen. Marshall! I like it! For his position though, you'll need to also put down whether he is either a soldier for Albania, or a Councillor or Deputy.))

((Welcome to everybody. I'm allowed to vote already, right? I'm a political figure for now.))

Von Braunschweig stands up.

The military is the backbone of a successful nation. All our ideals of democracy and equality can't be realized if we allow our neighbours to march their armies to Vienna. These ideals, incidentally, are promoted by the very party that also has the wisdom to know the importance of our army. Their economical approach is guaranteed to make our nation prosper, and the social reforms they wish to pass (including the mild progressive tax system) will provide in the basic needs of every member of our population.

My vote goes to the National Reform Union - [Albania].

((Aye, you are free to vote. Welcome to the game!))

Kraus nods at von Braunschweig

Welcome to these chambers Councillor. I understand that you are relatively new to politics, so if you have any queries feel free to ask. I am sure you will do Albania proud.

I think a certain Frederick Jaeger just blew his chances to be ever promoted. Firstly, a military officer has no right to officially make a political statement according to these new silly laws we have, and secondly he just criticized what seems to be the next government, which certainly isn't a good move career-wise.

Anyway, should we be worried about irresponsible adventurism from the military again? I certainly hope not, we've had enough of that. Very bad for business, just when you tink a new contract can be signed, someone kill your worker and some idiots who claim to be the army of whatever block river traffic. Enough of this.

Welcome, Comrade Braunschweig, thank you for your vote, you will not be disappointed.

Lawful Governments Act

I. All governments covered in this act are legitimate and recognized forms of government that can be used in the Danubian Federation, provided there is majority consent from the people the new form of government will apply to.
II. The forms of government that are covered in this Act cannot be declared illegal nor repealed by the Federal Government.
III. The recognized forms of government are; Presidential Republics, Parliamentary Republics, Crowned Republics and Constitutional Monarchies, with them loosely defined here:
a. Presidential Republic – The executive branch is led by a person who serves as both head of state and head of government, and is elected by the people.
b. Parliamentary Republic -The executive branch derives its democratic legitimacy from, and is held accountable to, the legislature. The head of state is normally a different person from the head of government.
c. Crowned republic – A form of constitutional monarchy where the monarch's role is ceremonial and all the royal prerogatives are prescribed by custom and law in such a way that the monarch has little or no discretion over governmental and constitutional issues.
d. Constitutional monarchy – A form of government in which a monarch acts as head of state within the guidelines of a constitution, whether it be a written, un-codified, or blended constitution. Constitutional monarchies are to employ a parliamentary system in which the monarch may have strictly ceremonial duties or may have reserve powers, depending on the constitution.

IV. All listed forms of government are to be provided as possible options of government for territories desirous of joining the Danubian Federation.

I present this Act to the chambers. I hope that it will pass, and will end the debates in regards to the legitimacy of some forms of government that exist within our Federation. While some see monarchies as being the epitome of evil, I stress that these forms of government are only instituted by popular consent. If the people want to live in a certain form of democratic government, they should not be restricted from doing so. Naturally I am willing to listen to suggestions on how to improve this Act, to make it more tolerable for all.

Should you not also define what these terms mean?

Do you mean define the governments' themselves? I am willing to do that if neccessary, but I thought that people were already aware of the structure's of these forms of government.

I just feel it should be clearly spelled out within the bill so there isn't any room for misrepresentations.

Ah, I see. A very valid concern. I have now added in the way the forms of government are defined into my bill, as per your advice.

Word has reached my ears of something that I deem not acceptable.

Colonel Frederick Jaeger, your actions are not only illegal against the Military Neutrality Act, but wrongful. You joined the military as a man willing to serve your nation, not spitting politics. I have warned members of this military three times now, supported by a official declaration from Minister Popa, and my tolerance has shrunk to none.

You are hereby, dishonorably discharged of your position.

(I don't know how yourworstnightmare found out...but if he did, then I suppose I did.))

Excerpt from a speech by Janos Papp at an A-DCP rally.

My friends, we live in uncertain times. Even faster than any had predicted, the liberal castle of cards has fallen at the first wind. Vertucci's candidacy lies under the ruins. We may rejoice, but they have given room to the Greater Enemy, the radicals, who are more organized and power hungry than ever. One still wonders in what proportion malice and incompetence mix in their ranks, but rest assured that we will continue the fight. Soukup's program may seem like that of a moderate among his. It is. Unfortunately for everybody believing him however, Soukup is too much of a moderate. He is not of the thread that makes true leaders - his presidency would be one of dreaded instability, failing to balance all the currents with too meek a man. Already, it is showing through the cracks. Even in his own party, there are disagreements with his policies of peace. In his coalition, on his economic policies. And among his supporters, even worse awaits him. If this man is elected to the presidency, this whole NRU will collapse on itself, as the A-DCP only knows too well. It took Kraus to just survive such a collapse, and Soukup is not half the man the president is.

And let's talk about their economical policy. Let's take the words of the man himself to see what threat we expose ourselves to if he manages to make it into the Schonbrünn1. This is from his own platform : "Capitalists, Business owners and investors will be given significant opportunities to invest in government established projects and industry along with other incentives to make sure our economy continues to grow". Yes, that's right, the radicals will graciously allow you to invest in what projects they deem fit. That is what they advocate for, it is the end of the free enterprise, the end of your freedom, the destruction of your efforts to make this Federation successful. Power will be concentrated in the hands of the radical administration, whether it is militarily or economically.

But enough about others. Let's talk about ourselves. I'm not sure where this canonball came from, but I must extend my hand to the survivors of the sinking Vertucci boat. The free market and unity are key points of my program, as is a strong and honest leadership. There is also the matter of trade unions. A front where winning the presidency will not suffice. The Federal Government is not all powerful and I don't intend to make it so - it will be up to you to ensure legislation specific to your state does not pass. Our Federation is such that the Bohemians cannot impose their laws on the Austrians and vice-versa; the radicals should remember to let every state find the solutions most appropriate for itself, before imposing equality in poverty to all.

I must also again speak against the Military Neutrality Act2, and the devastating policies of our current Minister of War. You cannot silence the people, they continue to think. That they have proved in the revolution. All you do by muting them is advancing the day of your fall, which will come silently as the organizations that used to sprawl the military are now hidden underground. It creates a defiance of government from the military-man, a dangerous defiance when we should be mending the wounds of the revolutions and recreating the bonds that they have broken. That is the way forward.

[1] : The Schonbrünn serves as the presidential palace since the end of the Eastern War, as described in this update.
[2] : The Military Neutrality Act, approved in 1857, prevents high-ranking military officers from being part of a party. It was proposed in reaction to the Masaryk coup of 1854 (which was apolitical) and the Civil War of 1857 (which involved no player generals).

((This did include the canonball bit, but the next sentence varies. Blame it on different translators.))
