Having previously played Kaiserreich for HoI2, I wanted to try it for Darkest Hour. Not all that different, really-- the same fun game I remember with some added improvements.
A few comments:
* When the event arose for Iceland's independence, it was released... but Denmark retained control over Reykjavik. Not sure why. Possibly it was because Scandinavia had been formed? Otherwise the events that followed worked normally, though it seemed strange that the events said Canada had been given the rights to base troops there (even though I was not given military access to Iceland) and the following events had Canadian troops clashing with British forces even though neither of us had troops stationed there (nor could we).
* When the American Civil War ended (with the USA victorious), and event started that had me turn all my seized lands in Alaska (as well as the land I'd taken from the CSA) back over to the USA in exchange for an alliance. Which was nice-- getting the USA into the Entente was useful. It also, however, handed over Prince Rupert and the Queen Charlotte Islands to the USA. They eventually handed them back, but it was still weird.
* I helped Delhi reconquer the Princely Confederation, and they got an event after it was done. I then helped them conquer the Bhartiya Commune... but there was never any kind of event following that which said anything about unifying India, even though they had the entire thing (and had annexed it themselves, as opposed to me annexing it and handing the territories over... though would that make a difference?). They retained cores on the Delhi region and only had claims on the Princely Confederation and Bhartiya lands afterwards.
* the Union of Britain fell rather easily. I got Ireland into the Entente, and from there it was rather easy to land an invasion force in Glasgow and march south. My force wasn't overwhelming, and none of the other Entente members landed a single army to help out (though their planes did help a bit), but mostly I just slowly fought south until I could annex them. So fair enough, right? The restoration of the UK event worked well enough... my only complaint being that the "merchant marine returns to the UK" event took away 250 convoys. Far more than I had or started with, leaving me with
negative convoys and escorts until I could restore them. That was harsh.
* I know it probably doesn't always fall this way, but in this particular game the Syndicalists fell rather easily. Germany ended up in a war with Russia (Russia allied with Don-Kuban, even though they were losing to Ukraine... and thus ended up at war with Ukraine's allies) and the war with France et al started while Germany was still at war. Worst case scenario, right? Except that Germany eventually defeated Russia, turning it into a vassal, and then annexed France less than a year later, turning it into a vassal as well. Austria, who joined Germany by event, annexed Italy (which the Syndicalists had united) and turned it into a vassal as well. By 1842, the wars were all done and there seemed little left to do.
All in all, it seemed a little strange that the Syndicalists never lifted a finger to help the Bhartiya Commune or Mexico or any of their other fellow Syndicalist nations. Perhaps I'm missing something from the Syndicalist expansion pack? Seemed like a lot of fuss over nothing, and the Germans walked over everyone. Though I suppose, like with the old Kaiserreich, I could probably play a new game and have everything turn out very differently.
