I've chosen Taira for their centeral location, they border the Emperor and all 3 other Daimyos. Minamoto (blue) is the current Shogun, I'll have to do something about that soon. For now I start by increasing my army size and forming an alliance with Tachibana (green). My initial plan is to build up and hit Fujiwara (purple) as soon as the Shugun's influence falls before 50. I also send an insult to Minamoto, low relations with Daimyos hurt their Influence:
attachment.php

I turn my ruler into a general and am pleasantly surprised to find he becomes a 2 fire/4 shock general. That'll be useful. Bad news on the diplomatic front though, Tachibana have broken their alliance with me and have allied with Fujiwara instead. To show my displeasure I sent a spy to Fujiwara who tarnishes their relations with the Shogun:
attachment.php

Luck is not on my side. Towards the end of 1401 a wide-spread uprising of my peasants begins:
attachment.php

Things become even worse when Minamato, supported by Fujiwara, declare war shortly after.

Perhaps my luck isn't so bad after all? Having the internal position means my enemies can't link up, and my large army lead my my 4 shock general defeats them in detail in a string of crushing victories. The defeats have caused a huge loss of face for the Shogun, his influence is at an all time low:
attachment.php

Tachibana, sensing weakness, swoop in like vultures to feast on the Shogun's corpse:
attachment.php

Seeing how the current Shogun is doing such a poor job I offer to help him out by becoming Kampaku. The Emperor also informs me that if all the other Daimyos endorse me he will name me Shogun in place of Minamoto:
attachment.php

Hmm...how can I convince them to do so?

Why, at sword-point of course! Since Tachibana's army just so happens to be nearby and at low morale from assaulting Minamoto's forts it's an ideal time to strike:
attachment.php

This makes them accept peace with MIN ASAP, gaining 3 provinces. War rages on throughout Japan, but just because we're figting doesn't mean we can't stop to appriciate the cherry blossoms:
attachment.php

Fujiwara continues to feel the wrath of my spies:
attachment.php

But in the end they agree that I would make a fine Shogun:

Minamoto and Tachibana also agree, and in 1405 the lord of Taria becomes Shogun. However, our high prestige doesn't quite offset our poor relations with the Daimyos, something must be done!
attachment.php

Improve relations? No, far better to disarm the Daimyos and improve my prestige still further!
attachment.php

However some of my troops get a bit carried away:
attachment.php

Nevermind that, we are formally named Shogun by the Emperor:

During a Tea ceremony with the Emperor, the lord of Minamoto causes a scene. We are not best pleased:
attachment.php

As always, I take out my displeasure on Fujiwara. Although in this case it's also because they're allied to Minamoto:
attachment.php

A nice feature of DW is that there's a seperate message setting for when the allies of someone you're at war with honour their alliance with them:
attachment.php

Apparently this war is very popular in my country, the next month the ongoing peasant's war finally peters out.

Fujiwara's army is the first to be defeated (of course), but while I'm doing that Tachibana swoops in and assaults Owari, which forces my transport fleet out to sea where it is destroyed:
attachment.php

:(

Fujiwara is force to give up 2 provinces for peace and Minamoto is forced to become my vassal. But I cannot cross the straits to reach Tachibana's heartlands, their fleet is stronger than mine. I have a plan though! I sign an alliance with my new vassal and call them into the war:
attachment.php

Our combined fleets smash Tachibana's and my army makes the crossing!
attachment.php

With Influence at a record high, it's time to curtail the Daimyo's powers:
attachment.php

In other news, I've reached Government tech 4 and chosen Military Drill as my first National Idea. I've also used my high Army Tradition to hire a rather nice general, 6/4/4/1.

Some people think all this power is going to my head, but what to they know?!?
attachment.php

A claim is forged on Awa, but the resulting Infamy pushes me over my limit, so I don't ask for it in the peace deal. This proves to be unfortunate as Tachibana collapses shortly afterwards and Minamoto ends up with much of their land, including Awa:
attachment.php

With peace restored to the land, the Emperor invites all his lords to a festival. However things do not go my way:
attachment.php

I don't know how Fujiwara sabotaged my sandals, but they'll pay for this!

A Red Seal Ship returns!
attachment.php

(I got the money)

Tachibana collapses still further:
attachment.php

Pay up, buddy:
attachment.php

I need the money to reward my loyal troops!
attachment.php

(Although actually I chose the other option and got a -1 stab hit, don't tell anyone though!)

The reason being, I want to buy a bunch of constables as I've reached production tech 4! 25% more census tax is pretty handy:
attachment.php

My Shogunate runs on a zero tolerence policy:
attachment.php

With Shogunate influence at 0, the time is ripe for a fresh civil war. I've canceled my vassalisation of Minamato, and they have promptly attacked Tachibana and canceled their alliance with me. If that wasn't bad enough, someone (Probably Fujiwara!) is accusing me of being a ruthless powermonger! Well...that's probably true actually, but that's no reason not to execute someone over it.
attachment.php

Tachibana is annexed. Will no one stop these crazy Minomatans? Well, I suppose it's up to me to preserve peace in Japan:

Peace breaks out once again:
attachment.php

However, we still need Fujiwara's vote:
attachment.php

Ok!

We celebrate regaining the Shogunate with another war against Minamoto:
attachment.php

I should probably mention that I could be cultivating good relations with the Daimyos and declaring wars on outside nations to keep Shogunate Influence high, but for this AAR I'm just focusing on annexing the Daimyos ASAP.

A regency council!
attachment.php

Oh well, my heir is 13, it's not so bad.

Nooooo! Send for the doctor!
attachment.php

He dies anyway.

Government tech 6 arrives, and with it the ability to build an embassy. Note that it requires the province not to be a core, it'll only last 49 years maximum. Thanks to taking the evil money gaining options in several events I can afford to build it right away:
attachment.php

Apparently abusing my office has its downside too, who knew?
attachment.php

Also, a new monarch has appeared. I'm actually not sure how, I clicked the event too soon and missed it. Still, all good.

The answer, of course, is to brutally attack the other two Daimyos once again. A ronin offers his services, but I would rather save the money.

Fujiwara, my nemesis, has been annexed and Minamoto is forced to give up more provinces. Previously I was trying to stay under the Infamy limit, but I decided to just go on a conquest spree. I'm also the Shogun once again:
attachment.php

High Infamy does have its downsides though:
attachment.php

Still, it's not going to stop me. Also, no more vanishing forts!
attachment.php

One of my Advisers is upset by my Infamy:
attachment.php

(And yes, I noticed it should be "resigns")

With one last war, and stupidly high Infamy, Japan can now be united!
attachment.php

attachment.php

And with all Japan under my rule that's the end of this AAR. Let's take a look at Asia:

And Europe:

Nice AAR, I think this would be well-received with the forum populace. 115 Infamy is... well... ouch! :)
