Getting your Victoria installation up to speed might not be entirely straight-forward. Therefore we have put together this little guide so that any questions you might have about it are answered.

This guide is up-to-date as of version 1.03c

Phase 1: Installing the game

setup_install.jpg

Follow the instructions as they are given; the details are documented elsewhere, so the only thing I'll ask is that you make note of where you install the game, since you might need that later.

FYI, your game is now what generally is referred to as "unpatched".

Phase 2: Installing the offical 1.03 patch

Next, download the offical patch from http://www.paradoxplaza.com/victoria.asp?Page=downloads or one of the mirrors out there, making sure to download the version of it that suits your edition of the game (language-wise)

Run the patch-program

It will detect your installation, and thereby know where the files should go, and the amount of input needed from you is minimal

Phase 3: Installing the 1.03c beta patch

Then download the 1.03c beta patch from http://www.europa-universalis.com/forum/showthread.php?t=168517

Now comes the "tricky part"; the beta doesn't have its own installer, so you'll need to get the files into place yourself.

Open the 1.03c zip-file with your favourite unzipping program. Personally, I use ZipGenius, but any unzipping program will do, even the built-in one you find in some Windows versions. If you use a different program than ZipGenius, the details of the following might differ, but the principle is the same.

This is when you need to have the information about where you installed the game. The unzipping program needs to know where it shoudl unpack the files to, and that should be your root Victoria directory; the one e.g. containing the .exe-file (I). Also, if your unzipping program gives you the option, make sure to maintain the directory structure (II), since that will place all files exactly where they should be.

Depending on the settings you have, you should be prompted with a question about whether or not it should overwrite the files. It should. If you aren't prompted, check your settings, since otherwise, this if you aren't asked about this, it may be a sign that you are unpacking to the wrong place.

And that's it. Now you should be ready to play a fully updated game of Victoria.

FYI, the game is now what is commonly referred to as "vanilla"; that is, all offical patches have been installed, but no user-made modifications of any kind.
