Republic of Crete

Introduction

The Republic of Crete, established in the 5th of January 1857, is one of the constituent states of the Danubian Federation. The Island of Crete has a long, rich, history, dating back well before the founding of Christianity. It has housed many different civilizations and cultures, from the ancient Romans, to the seafaring Venetians.

Prior to the Republic’s founding, it was known as the Duchy of Crete, and housed many of the former patricians of the now defunct state of Venezia (now San Marco). The Duchy held unstable popularity, and its legitimacy was always questioned. After the Danubian Civil War, the Duchy of Crete was abolished and replaced by the Republic of Crete, due to the results of a federal referendum.

Since its establishment as a Republic, Crete has ceased to become a point of contention in Danubian politics, and has become a quiet, but productive member of the Federation.

Administrative Subdivisions

The island of Crete is one whole federal administrative division; however the Cretan State itself has several administrative subdivisions:

• Chania
• Heraklion
• Rethymno
• Lasithi

These subdivisions are only used for the Republic of Crete’s own state administration.

Notable Individuals of Crete

Wojciech Gomułka: Polish by birth, Gomułka originally served as Deputy for Galicia. However during the term of the transitory government of Crete, as the Island was reorganized from being a Duchy to being a Republic, Gomułka announced that he would be willing to help govern the state, and when he was confirmed as Governor he moved to live in Crete. He was elected as the Republic’s 1st President.

Aetios Spiros: A native Greek of Crete, Spiros comes from one of the many aristocratic families of the island. Putting the people of Crete at the forefront of his concerns and duties, Spiros has become a noted socialist, despite his conservative upbringing.

Vasilios Mitsotakis: A fellow Greek, like Spiros, Mitsotakis came from a wealthy aristocratic family. Mitsotakis, however, kept his conservative views and joined the ranks of the conservatives in the Danubian Federation, eager to represent Cretan interests.

Konstantinos Venizelos: Venizelos is a minor aristocrat who grew up on a small estate in Crete. He was elected on a platform of supporting the interests of Crete and is strongly dedicated to principles of states' rights and conservative politics.

((Here is the Crete state post that was discused several days ago. I would like to thank everyone that has contributed to this work, Maxwell500 and Fingon888 for joining in creating the Constitution. A special thanks goes to Tapscott for giving me the flag and creating the rest of the post. I also want to thank theAhawk for letting us do this.))

I am glad to here Crete has finalized its constitution. Congratulations to the men who worked hard at it.

~ Henrik Kraus, Chancellor for Austria

((Looks good, and thanks for the praise! Two things though, can you take away the post out of the quote [it makes it easier to read] and I forgot to remove Gomulka as head of state, unless it has been decided he shall stay as President))

Extract from the Danubian Weekly Herald;
"Figures released by the Ministry of Finance show the Danubian economy has shrunk for the first time in the nation's short history. Projections indicate that the economy could shrink by as much as 5% if the current trend continues for the rest of this year, while investor confidence is at the lowest point since May 1849 and the big banks in Vienna are having record low applications for loans."

Our economy is already suffering because of the calls for nationalizations and demonizing of business coming from the socialists in these chambers. The extreme rhetoric and policies of the socialists and their allies has caused investment in the Federation to dry up and caused production to shrink. All investors and businessmen feel their companies and years of hard work could be ripped away from them at a whim by the socialists. Socialism is the greatest threat to the prosperity of the Federation and it is already harming us. I urge the President to distance himself from the socialists and former radicals who call for these damaging policies and to reassure business that it is safe to invest and that property rights will be respected.

((Will there be an new Progressive Society meeting sometime soon? I make it three years since the last one. Speaking of which, I'm still trying to fathom out a way of getting this Order of Merit to work ;)))

I very much agree with Mr. Catelli, we cannot jepordise our Free Market, Laissez Faire economy because one company went over board! Doing so will completely destroy our economy and we will be no better off then we wereunder the habsburgs.

- Frydryk Augustyniak, Councilor of Silesia

Edit: ((Updated the silesian state post if I missed any silesians tell me and I'll add you in.))

((I've made those changes, and I think ill PM theAhawk to figure out the Cretan elections))

((Cool. I wonder who will win Crete!))
((I have no idea, it would be aquard if the three of us ran, and all voted for ourselves, though))

Due to a conflict with the Lombard constitution, I shall be resigning as Ambassador to Prussia.

~ Silvestro Marconi, President of and Councillor for Lombardia

Realising that she should get out while the economy still held up, Caterina quietly sold the majority of her stock in the ATC to her secretary and went back the Lombardia to continue planning her wedding; still the wealthiest woman in the Federation.

Name: Matthias von Marius-Parsifal
Date of Birth: 9th of September, 1827
Position: Councillor for Carinola
Political Party: Danubian Worker's Party

Biography: Son of a wealthy petite bourgeois family of German Carniolans; Matthias quickly became an idealist after being sent off to university and was a member of the 3rd Republican Infantry that was hastily assembled during the Revolution. Although beginning his political career as a fiery Radical Mattias soon mellowed into Radical-influenced centrism and served as a state legislator for Zentrum for quite some time. Recently crossing the floor to the DWP Matthias is now something of a social democrat; paradoxically he is also a fierce proponent of colonialism. In a curious mixture of racism and socialism he preaches that through controlled capitalism and democratic socialism it is the duty (indeed, the burden) of the White Man to liberate the foreign savage from his proto-capitalist and monarchist overlords.

((As was pointed out, playing as a woman is really very limiting and can get quite tiresome. Caterina will pop in from time to time; but simply is not viable as a main character as much as it saddens me.))

The Danubian Worker's party welcomes a second member into the chambers! May his career be long and successful.

I welcome Matthias von Maruis-Parsifal to Congress. Although we have our differences, I do share your belief in a controlled capitalism and I hope to work together in the future.

I welcome you, good sir, to the Federal Parliament, and I hope that we can work together on measures of social reform. I would also like to invite you to join the Progressive Society.

((Sounds good))

I would like to put all this talk to this government causing a downturn in the economy to rest. This is simply a normal fluctuation in the economy, and once this whole mess sorted out monetary policy will help straighten out the economy.

Official Report from Tunisia

To the Federal Congress:

By, The Chief of the General Staff, Symon Revenjo:

It is within the intrests of the state, that the Chief of the General Staff, on behalf of Admiral Francesco Ianuchi of the Red Star Fleet, Admiral Luca Mladnovic of the Federal Transport Fleet, General Colombo Tagliabue of the Italian Army, and General Aldo Orsatti of the Naval Guard report the following incidents of the invasion of the Tunsia to the Federal Council and the Federal Assembly.

1. The first mercenary detachments of forces had very much shrunk upon the landing of the Naval Guard, most of whom had moved to unknown locations. Those that remained were properly disarmed and detained.

2. The 9th Regiment of the Naval Guard, which, landed South of Tripoli, marched towards the city, but were refused entrance.

3. The city of Tripoli is currently occupied by a mercenary force refusing entrance. There loyalty is currently unknown, but for the instances of recent events, one can assume who their contracts lie within.

4. Mercenary forces bare the flag of Tunisia, though it is well accepted that the Tunisian Government has yet to display their willingness to purchase forces. We leave all investigations of the purchasing of these mercenaries to the Ministry of Security.

5. A Northern detachment of the Italian Army detained and disarmed a group of mercenaries, despite a questionable claim that they were "defending the region against local pirates."

6. The Naval Blockade has been fully implemented.

7. We request permission from the Minister of War to prepare artillery to Tripoli, and determine the loyalty and contract of the mercenaries, as they have denied Federal entry into the city.

Signed,

Symon Revenjo

((GM approved.))

((What's the Progressive Society again? And the order of Merit for that matter? :p))
((A broad society for everyone from the center-left to the far-left. The Order of Merit is an idea we have to give an award to those who give progress to the Federation.))

((So if I wish to join the Progressive Society..?))
