This was my first game, so I decided to start as someone easy. You don’t get much easier than Castille.
1399-1410
Right off the bat, I got lucky with the mission as it demanded I take Grenada. I do so rather quickly and pick up two new cores and take rather large chunks out of Morocco, Algiers, and Tunisia. As the war ends, I had high Infamy. At first, I was going to relax and let that go down, but I had already built a decent army and remembered someone mentioning somewhere that Portugal started with a small army. I declared war and took their Northern provinces.
1410-1419
Now my Infamy was getting out of control, which encouraged Aragon to declare war on me. They quickly tear Castille apart due to my armies still regrouping in northern Portugal. I spawn a few for soldiers and manage to push them back into Aragon. I managed to siege three provinces and in the peace treaty was allowed to take Valencia. At this point, I send my magistrates to raise my Cultural Tradition and I spawn a Diplomat to put into office and lower my infamy.
1419-1447
Once my Infamy had dropped low enough, I returned to Africa. From there, my Infamy inflates again as I finish Morocco and Tunisia. Once my Infamy fell again, I quickly collected what remained of Algiers and their new ally, Tripoli as well. At that point, I finished my Navy mission and received the mission to start a base in Italy. The choice was easy! There was Italians fresh for the picking right across from my new African base. Sicily was nice and ripe, especially since they had conquered Navarra earlier in the game. My Infamy dropped and I took them. Lucky for me, they were also allied with Aragon and Portugal. I started with Portugal. I annexed what they had left, Infamy jumped up. I blockaded Sicily in their ports and sent my troops to take Navarra and build a defensive wall between myself and Aragon. I let my Infamy drop a few points, invaded Aragon. Once I had them subdued in a long, bloody couple battles, I shipped a few troops off to Sicily. I was almost out of men thanks to Aragon, but luckily most of Sicily’s forces had been lost when I destroyed their fleet. I annexed Sicily and with them, Navarra. I also took a few extra provinces from Aragon.
1447-1487
After many years of bloody war, I settle down to rebuild my forces and lower my Infamy. Lucky for me, England, Scotland, France, and Brittany had been locked in war or I likely would have been getting ganged due to high BB. I focus on my economy, diplomacy, and building my forces for the next 10 years, have a quick war with the devastated Aragon and finish annexing them. I now have the base for my empire and focus only on economy and diplomacy for the next 30 years.
1487-1539
These years started with a mission to colonize lands to the south, so I went and colonized a portion of Africa. I took a glance at the Scandinavian countries. I noticed that through a series of wars, they had been torn apart. Finland had been released, Venice had taken Iceland, and Sweden/Denmark was locked in a war with Scotland and England. I saw opportunity and went for it. I invested everything into Stability. I would need it. I was allied with Burgandy, Pommerania, and the Teutonic Order. I went for Norway first. I quickly tore it down to a few provinces as they were abandoned by Sweden and Denmark. I then took Finland as they were alone and exposed. I finally waited until Sweden and Denmark’s fleets were destroyed before declaring on Denmark. Surprisingly, Sweden didn’t answer the call. I tore Denmark down to one province. I declared on Sweden next. Their forces were decimated; I tore them down to a few provinces. My Infamy was insane, my Stability had dropped, and I was being overwhelmed by rebels. I did not give up. I took the bulk of my forces from Africa, leaving only a few to fight off rebels and shipped them to Scandinavia. I battled the rebels until my Truce wore down and then declared my wars again in the same order. Norway, Finland, Denmark, and finally Sweden. I managed to annex them all. This is where things got ridiculous and my infamy skyrocketed. Due to this mass Infamy, I couldn’t take the rebels. I released Sweden as a vassal and removed my troops from their lands to cover the rebels in the other areas. From there, I sold Sweden the rest of Scandinavia piece by piece for the awesome price of FREE. I was desperate to get rid of the land as rebels had torn my forces apart. By the time I freed myself from the Scandinavian scourge, much of Africa and Iberia was under rebel control and I had a measly 20k troops left. I guess that is what happens when you push too far too fast!
1539-1554
These years were spent fighting back the rebel hordes, lowering infamy, and raising stability. Also, I was given a mission to colonize La Plata, so I headed to South America. Immediately after, I was missioned to the Caribbean. As I selected my colonies, I got a rush of colonists, which allowed me to expand a bit more in the Caribbean while I was there. In the early 1550’s, my long time allies the Prussian’s declared war on the Incans, allowing me to collect a large amount of territories for minimal infamy gain.
1550-1558
Picked up a few more colonies in South America due to the colonize Picunmapu mission. I am then sent to colonize Choco and Quito afterwards. I got another rush of colonists and the mission to colonize Paredareme, so I set sail for Australia. Sweden creates Scandinavia, Teutonic Order creates Prussia, and Scotland creates Great Brittain. Finnish rebels rise and take parts of Prussia while Norwegian rebels retake Iceland. I am told to colonize Cochimi, so I headed to the west coast of North America.
1558-1600
I am given the mission to keep Austria out of Italy. Italy is Castille’s domain! That is fine with me as I wanted to start moving into Italy anyways. First thing is first. I need a base. Naples just diplomatically insulted me. Here we go. It is Naples, Corsica The Papal State, and Bulgaria vs Spain, Scandinavia, Prussia, and Pommerania. Oh, wait! Prussia dishonors the call. In that same instant, the Incans decide to get revenge on me for the war that those treacherous Prussians declared in the first place. I start by annexing what remains of the Incans, which sparks up my Infamy. I cease to care because my whole goal was Naples. I annex Naples and Bulgaria, taking my Infamy to 80. This encourages Tuscany, the Ottomans, Morea, and Montenegro to join. My armies have already been decimated by rebels in Southern Africa, the Americas, and Italy. All of my forces have been pulled out of Iberia and been distributed across the sea, half my half of my transports been crushed due to a miss click and the Ottomans having caught me off guard. Now things are getting fun..Where are my allies anyways? Three years into this war and neither Pommerania or Scandinavia have sent a single ship or soldier to support me. Gotta love helpful allies. The only real army I have left is around 40,000 soldiers sitting in North Africa. I have no transports to move them into position against the Ottomans. I check my chances for military access with the Mamluks. -200 relationship. That would be a no go, but wait! I already have access across their lands somehow. I’m not sure when or how I got this access, but I have it. We are in business. The ottomans have moved 80,000 of their troops into Greece to attack the newly acquired Bulgaria region. I cut them off by placing all my remaining galley, frigate, and carrack class ships off the coast of Thrace. Into the back door of the Ottoman Empire with my North African army now that the bulk of their forces are cut off. I managed to push far enough to force white peace. At this point, rebels had taken most of South Africa, Australia, South America, and portions of Iberia. I never had a single revolt in North Africa.
I planned to continue the game and get another screen shot, but the client crashed and it was late. It set me back four months and I really didn’t feel like continuing just to get dominated by rebels again. On the bright side, I learned a few things from my first game.
1. Going over the infamy limit makes painful revolts.
2. Vassals as large as Scandinavia and allies are useless when you actually need them. In my minor wars against North Africa, early Sweden/Denmark, Portugal, and Aragon where I did not need much help, my allies were more than willing to show up. In my one major war where it was virtually the “end all”, I fought for 7 years against an opponent that outnumbered me 3 to 1. My biggest ally, Prussia ditched me and then Pommerania and Scandinavia never showed up. My discovery? Never get involved in a war you can’t win yourself. Which I still came out tied with the Ottomans, but I couldn’t spare resources to fight the rebels because of it. This resulted in my downfall.
3. Don’t follow the missions. I had an amazing colonial empire, but it was too spread out. When the rebels struck, I simply did not have the ships or troops to protect it all.
4. Apparently North Africa is more stable than Iberia?
Dunno what that was about, but really Iberia began to revolt in large numbers. North Africa was my only solid front without rebellions. Actually, if I go back to the game, I might sacrifice large portions of Iberia to keep North Africa as my new base.
All in all, it was a fun game, but as a new player I simply could not deal with the rebels that high Infamy sent at me. 10-20 brigades in 4-5 provinces at once per month is ridiculous. The truth is, after this game, I’m not sure I will ever waste my time with vassals again. I created a vassal with the 6th largest army following only the Ottomans, Spain, France, Austria, and Hungary in that order. Still, they couldn’t be bothered to organize an army to aid me? Confused me immensely. That said, annexing costs too much Infamy. I guess I should just expand at a much slower rate? In that case, I think other Empires may outgrow me quickly. Dunno, will have to do more testing.
