A few mentions have been made of airplanes in technology threads, but what about the Zepplin?

They served as passengar and cargo vessels, bombers, even aircraft carriers though none saw combat as far as I know.

I just hope Zepplins are remembers.

i don't really know what effect they had overall though.

although, i think the Germans anticipated them to have a tremendous effect, as far as intimidation. use for bombing, etc.

is this something that should be implemented as a unit, or somehow utilised as events?

i'm not sure how big a part the zeppelin should play.

perhaps somebody can convince me otherwise.

Early in WW1, a German zeppelin dropped bombs onto Paris, damaging two train stations. IIRC, there were also raids into England. However, the effect was very neglegible.

Overall, Zeppelins were too slow, flew too low, were too prone to damage, and were generally less flexible than airplanes for any major military impact.

The civilian use, as means of transportation, is something else, of course.

You are correct about them being slow, however they flew very high. Much higher than any airplane of the time. That was their strength.

Even in the Civil War hot air ballons were sometimes used for reconisance.

I don't think that zeppelins would have any impact.
To expensiev to build in comparison to the effect they had.

They could be added to the game and everybody can decide for themselves to develop and create them. Maybey if some country invested heavilly in them they could have become a strong weapon.

Zeppelin Bombings had little effect as far as actual destruction is considered. however, they somehow disorganized the British industry, though not that much, and they had a huge Psychological effect (we're still talking about them now). They were primarily a terror weapon. Imagine the effect of seeing a Fleet of several Zeppelins flying over your head.
The British used large amounts of resources to build anti Zeppelin defenses. This included several squadrons withdrawn from the front, lines of anti air batteries and searchlights.

I would be content if they just used Led Zeppelin in Victoria's soundtrack.:)

Yes, but they couldn't bomb worth crap at that height, they'd be lucky to hit the right county, especially in bad weather. Plus, the cabbins and such were not pressurized, and not heated, so the crew couldn't tolerate being very high for long. Most Zepplin bombings were down lower, where airplanes could reach.

It would be nice to have zeppelins, if for nothing else than for the graphics.

They are a favorite motive on postcards from the turn of the 19th/20th Century and the BIG symbol of progress.:D

at least for cover art (along with the elephants)

and this thread too.

They'll probably put them in once they are researched by the player, with a similar role as aircraft in HoI, but with much more limited capabilities.

I hope aircraft are not in the game at all...perhaps they could be a tech whihc increased overall unit efficency but their impact was really not important enough to warrant a whole unit especially for the first 95% of the timeframe

There should be attachable airplane brigades that give the division they're attached to great reconisance. Tanks and long range artillery should attachable brigades as well.
