I don't understand this idolatry of watching random people playing a game over the interweb. When I start playing Stellaris I want to work it out for myself not walk into it instantly knowing everything because I spent hours and hours watching others.

Uhm.. Entertainment? Wishing to know more to help decide something? I personally watch different kinda of channels, a lot of them gaming ones, and that has replaced regular TV for me. Twitch as well.

Well, quill18's LPs of EUIV were how I actually learned to play PDX GSGs. Without those YouTubers, I would never have bought any expansions for EUIV, would never have bought CK2, and would certainly never have pre-ordered Stellaris, nor be seriously considering pre-ordering HOI4. Plus, I've SOLD copies of EUIV and Stellaris to other people through ye olde word of mouth advertising.
So, those "random people" are quite important these days in the world of games marketing.

They're entertainers. Youtubers who just play and say nothing usually don't get many views. I'm quite bored with EU4 right now but I still enjoy watching Shen play it for example.

Like I said I don't get it, why watch someone play a video game when you can do so yourself? I get way more entertainment from figuring out how to play a game than I would by watching a video and then just replicating what someone else did.
I can understand wanting to watch a video if you haven't decided whether or not to buy but judging by the number of alien avatars that doesn't apply to many people here.

Another good reason: You have a badass gaming desktop but have to travel for work just 2 days after release with a, being generous, non-gaming Surface Pro 4 and you need your Stellaris fix. YouTube. Boom.

I don't disagree with the avoidance of spoilers thing. That is a bigger issue with Stellaris than it was with any other game, IMO. That said, I have to balance learning how to play with the spoilers. The problem that a lot of games these days is a lack of a decent tutorial. Sadly, with the extremely limited time I have to actually play these days, if a game doesn't grab me within a couple hours, it likely won't get played. A critical component of grabbing me is being challenging, but not inscrutable. I experienced frustration with both Endless Space and Endless Legend because I thought I was playing well, but turns out I was way behind the AI. And the issue was that it took tens of hours to learn that I was sucking. So, LPs help me learn a game and see what NOT to do so I don't waste a ton of time and get frustrated.
