What is or isn't is irrelevant. When you say things like that, especially alongside "straight-up" and "no nonsense", there is a negative connotation. It's dismissive towards the players who use things you consider to be exploits. Even if I rarely use things that meet your criteria (and I might not-so-rarely), it's dismissive of any of the YouTubers who use an arbitrary and forever ill-defined set of options that somehow make their content less desirable. That's fine, people should watch what they enjoy, but at the same time you're asking a question and can't even define what it is you're asking for in that regard, while casting actions in impressive games in a negative light based on no known consistent criteria whatsoever.

There's enough inherent negativity there that it's odd to then act surprised when some of the reactions are negative, especially when a majority were less negative than the OP .

I asked for recommendations - and I got some - so thank you to everyone who made a positive contribution. It would be nice to be able to ask a fairly straightforward question - and to state a preference - without getting a load of patronising negativity, but I guess everyone has their own agenda - and their own preference regarding the way they play the game - which is obviously fine.

Nothing like a group of people with no counter-argument whatsoever banding together to contribute nothing . It's like herding!

And he did start this nitpick, the moment he put that garbage in the OP. He can try to squirm otherwise, but this ship of fools stuff is silly. We're talking about someone who considers using missions to get to 100 AT fast an exploit, but has no problem with players allying France and gaining tons of land at France's expense.

Both actions are well within the game's bounds. Both actions allow the player to do something historically implausible. Both actions provide the player an advantage. However, allying France to have it carry you brings a lot more utility (orders of magnitude) than getting a 100 tradition general as an isolated OPM at the start.

But which one does the OP cite as exploitative and thus dismiss a quality playthrough? The "exploit" that provides markedly less utility despite being in no way objectively discernible from the other action.

Game over in this argument for all 3 of you. OP arbitrarily dismissed a number of quality YouTubers with an arbitrarily applied garbage term and then tries to act like a victim when people call him out on that. The best evidence that you guys have nothing is that all you can do is +1 non-arguments .

Alright, think this has rumbled on for long enough. This topic isn't intended to be a criticism of play styles, and everyone has had a chance to make their opinion heard. From now on posts in this thread criticising or defending play styles are off topic, and will be removed.

I'm sure Jake knows far more than I ever will, but I'm just not interested in the gamey stuff - that's my choice. I'd love to see him produce something where he just plays it straight - starting with a OPM - I'm sure I'd learn loads.

For anyone looking for the same kind of stuff as I was - I'm currently enjoying Jake's "Rajput Reich" (Nagaur) - no funny business so far (up to end of chapter 4) - just really ballsy gameplay. What this guy can do with 2 or 3 regiments of infantry is just ridiculous. #EU4Rockstar

DDR Jakes videos are great, love his commentary and easy going style. Although im pretty casual and watch on youtube, he regulary streams on Twitch.

It's great to see his "exploits" and he has taught me many a thing or two.

Quill18 was a good choice, but his videos are from the previous patches so they're kinda outdated. Go for DDRJake if you're looking for some interesting ways to play. I personally wouldn't recommend Arumba. He can help with the basics but the amount of historical errors he makes makes me wanna cry and rip my face off. (I know I know, but I'm a history nerd and when people get historical facts wrong it makes me cringe).

I appreciate it, wasn't sure what OP is looking for. I'm a strong player but not DDRJake strong, I feel like I'm a few steps behind guys like Path and Ikkiks also. Even at this late date in my #hours played I feel like I'm better at the end of a campaign than the start lol, probably why I've been playing this so long. That said, I will also mention my dual-streamer ParadogsGamer as he's very active also.

Ultimately it's just a matter of finding someone whose commentary you enjoy. Most of the youtubers will use exploits on occasion and I'm not an exception there, which is the other part of the reason I hesitated to advertise myself here. I generally won't do anything too earth-shattering if it takes lots of micro, my old civ IV audience knows I'm not about the micro .

I'll watch you just on the strength of your Civ. games. Just no nukes, OK?

Nukes are Jake's trademark in this game. Besides, there's no way to nuke your way to a diplomatic victory in EU.

He plays a lot of other stuff simultaneously, which means his EU campaigns take quite a while to finish, which is why he always seems to end playing games that started in previous patches. He is a great youtuber overall (one of the few Let's Players I follow), but his EU videos are not that great as a result.

You can try - Chimpeh, Velix or HalbyStarcraft. Haven't seem them use any exploits and they are pretty knowledgeable. I still think DDRJake is the best out there, even if he uses exploits, some of them he uses them once just to show off, others more often, but then again, for his goals and what he's trying to achieve, I think its acceptable. I mean, let's face it, you try to create a Sunni pope and eradicate all Christianity and honestly I won't but your balls about using some exploits. And I've learned a lot of legit stuff from his gameplay

Type Vox Mundi EU 4 in youtube, I can't remember the guy's name, his let's plays, IMO suit best to minimum exploit thing you are looking for. And are really interesting

Yeah I've noticed that, but I feel like a newbie player would right at home because Quill18 isn't too great of a player, and he's still learning too. I don't know, that's just how I felt and how learned to play EU4 actually, from Quill18.

I like Shenryyr2's videos. He is very relaxed and joking as he plays, and yet does very well (keeping good balance between silliness and not making big mistakes).
