Just played my first game of the new 2.3 patch.

I was mexico and got owned by the united states. However, by the end of the game I became a GP and had booming automotive/aeronautical/electrical industries. I also had tanks! Although for some reason when I tried to invade Chile they destroyed me. They actually had nearly 100% literacy and had every tech researched!

Anyway, the game only saw one great war and it was one that I had to sort of "cheat" to make by tag switching. It was me, the USA, Prussia (and our minor buddies) on one side vs. the UK and Italy.

Strangely enough, Russia, who was allied with the UK, ended up DOWing Prussia but they didn't actually join the great war! It was disappointing that it counted as a separate war. Why didn't they just join and add the same wargoal?

Anyway, there was only one great war and the result was lackluster. The UK lost one province in Canada and that was it. They were still the #1 GP in basically every category and stated that way forever. I thought great wars were supposed to be game-changing! Also, another weird thing was that I was never allowed to add a wargoal despite us having like +30% warscore on them for like the whole war. What gives?

What are your experiences or thoughts on the great war mechanic so far?

Haven't had a great war yet, but as far as adding wargoals you need to tab over to the warprogress screen in diplomacy while having the nation you wish to extract a wargoal from selected. Then you should be able to add a wargoal with or without justification depending on what you did previously.

Playing as the new Arabia, I have seen give or take 3 great wars. It is rather comical, there is "French Rheinland" and the British have taken Kaiserslautern from the Bavarians. The Austrians lost Bohemia (but that may not have been a great war) and in turn took Kovel from the briefly-independent Ukraine. All in all, I don't see huge effects from the great wars, but I think that's good--they occur far too often for my taste, and if they ended up with a country being dismantled at the end, the world would be turned upside-down. I think they need to incorporate the dismantling affect of the Great Wars Mod, but only later in the game when it becomes more serious.

Also, the French forgot to colonize Africa.

I saw two great wars as GER (one that involved me) - and the results were rather funny:

The first one was England + Italy vs. Austria + France + Russia. Italy was quickly overrun and completely occupied, but refused to peace out. They lost about 8k pop to emigration (their total pop was ~4.4kk before the war). The war staled for 5 or 6 years until a peace was signed - with the result that England surrendered, with all of their home islands untouched and their navy in good shape. And: North West England was turned over to Austria. X_x

The second great war was USA + Germany vs. England + Russia. The Russians gave me quite a beating because my armies sitll lacked ART, so I was forced to build 100 new brigades after the war had started. Managed to peace out most of the minor countries (with enforcing the Great War goal at 0%). Even managed to sign peace with Russia, but then the game crashed. :<

All in all I think Great Wars start a bit too early. I unlocked them around 1880 (I think its done by Revolution & Counter Revolution?), but 1900 (Mass Politics) would proabably be better.
