I thought it'd be interesting to hear people's "scariest moments" in Europa Universalis IV, as I just had one in my last game.

First, my end game map:

Netherlands in Ruins.png

The year is 1812 AD. I'm playing Netherlands as a colonial trading power. It has been pretty smooth sailing so far. Then I see, "Your colony Nova Hollandia has started a war with French Canada citing, "Conquest" as their casus belli." That'd happened before and I didn't get dragged into the war so I didn't think much of it. 1815 rolls around and I do get dragged into the war. Now I'm fighting France with their ~300,000 size military and full manpower. Meanwhile all of my troops were over in Aden/Hormoz/Malacca because I wanted to grab that achievement before the game ended. I hired a couple of mercenaries, scorch-earthed my border provinces, and then just figured I'd watch them struggle to siege my level 9 fort borders. Then they called in Austria. That wouldn't be a big deal considering Austria's size on the map except that the emperor had successfully passed "Revoke the Privilegia" on around 1813. Every single HRE country, save myself, agreed to become Austria's vassal - naturally Austria got mad and broke our alliance. Seeing the achievement, "Play the game until 1820," I figured once it was 1820 the game would end, so I thought I just had five more years and then I'd "win the game" (I had the highest score). Of course I found out in ends in 1821, but that last year was definitely one of uncertainy.

I try to end my games on a good note, so I can feel good knowing my country doesn't have shit to deal with after 1821 has passed, in whatever parallel universe it exists in . Also, look at that Tirol o.o

Lol, yeah, I did not pass my country on well to the next generation. Tirol is actually in a personal union under France. I was surprised by Silesia's size... they're basically the new Poland. In my limited playtime I've never seen them get much bigger than one or two provinces (and often stays a vassal).

I was playing as Byzantium and conquered most of the middle east, africa and italy when Austria (who inherited burgundy and Great britain) declared war on me using the Holy war CB while I was westernizing, was all well and good but a few months later Russia declared with conquest. So i decided to block the bosphorus while holding off the combined Austrian-Russo forces in the georgian mountain range.
THEN Castille declared for some random province in North africa so I was like.. ok, whatever my navy is big enough I'll just not let them land. France joins Castillian call to arms. Got pretty screwed since I could barely hold the georgian front and I was losing ducats really fast considering a quarter of my empire was being occupied so in a desperate move I offered to convert to catholic dropping Austria out of the war.
Then poland declared and I ragequit

Man, sorry to hear that - that's way too much.

What the hell happened to Silesia? :eek:hmy:

I wasn't paying a ton of attention to them but from my glances in that direction, it seemed Silesia and Austria were allied almost all game, and almost constantly fighting Poland. Then, whenever Austria took over Poland's territory, they just gave it to Silesia.

A completely botched invasion of Tuscany in my Byzantium game. I was utterly humiliated by the Austrian-led HRE which included a very large Brandenburg. Had to release a bunch of countries (thankfully all diploannexed before the end) but most importantly it ended my ambitions of conquering all of Italy - Austria and Brandenburg were too strong for me.

Scariest moment for me was, playing Norway... I opportunistically conquered the rich mine province from Sweden in about 1480, and in a cocky moment, reduced the autonomy, as unrest was under control at the time.

When the reformation came, I embraced it full on, getting my own centre of reformation - but religious turmoil hit. I decided to 'convert the heretics' - big mistake. I couldn't increase local autonomy in two of my provinces because they had 'reduced local autonomy' modifier on them from earlier. I couldn't stop the rebellions, and the Swedish nationalists were bigger than my standing army in Norway. I had a few thousand infantry in America supporting colonies, so I quickly tried to bring them back... my cogs took the most direct route - and sank in the ocean, as I'd had them sitting mothballed and they were low on hull strength. I panicked, swearing like a madman, I took about ten loans and hired several mercenaries to boost my rather ordinary troops. A 50% numerical advantage did the trick in the end against the rebels with higher morale. Crisis over, I wasn't going to lose my very rich Swedish province. I disbanded the mercs, dealt with the smaller rebellion (a heretic one), and started consolidating. Lots of fun.

Every time the AI DOWs you for conquest CB, there is some reason to be scared :) The AI is so chicken that when it fights you it´s because it knows at least some odds are in their favor.

Also still funny that 95% times, the saviour/devil is France...

My scariest moment was in a game where I formed The Netherlands as Friesland. I controlled all the Dutch, Flemish and Wallonian provinces and had an alliance with France, who had helped me against Burgundy. France became leader of a PU with Austria around 1500 and decided to cancel the alliance with me and shortly after declared war.

yup in multiplayer as well.

So that command works, and all the others don't?

What was the outcome of the war?

As tiny 6 province Oman, seeing that Qara Koyunlu has declared war, and has -1000 modifier for desiring to annex.

So I got access through the Mamlukes, and spent several years looting their countryside while their armies burned in the Qatari deserts. Then Persia, Turkey, and the Mamlukes jumped in and ahhh... Poor Qara Konyunlu.
