*Imagines Victoria fan meet-up where everyone wears a pickelhaube*

*Pukes*

If such an event would be organized, everyone will be free to choose whether to wear the Pickelhaube OR the Top Hat with monocle and fake moustache. On top of that, moderators will also be able to choose between wearing the Victoria Cross or the Pour le Merit.

How's that sound to you?

Naah, it seems Paradox developped historical games (therefore no Hoi) seems to get hats or things you put on your head as icons.
I don't see why it would change.
Judging from the cover of the game it will most likely be that pointy thing.

Actually the Pickelhaube is not exclusively a Prussian helmet. it was used by the British as their service and tropical helmet during the 1800's. Other nations such as Russia and Sweden also used it. Although it was the Prussians who made the most use of this helmet, yet i think it perfectly symbolizes the European military establishment of the 1800's. The Victoria Cross has already been used in the Victoria beta.

Swedish royal guard still use it IIRC.

I think a top hat and monocle would better symbolize the nature of the game and set it a bit apart from the combat-centered HoI series. This is not about war primarily.

Well its true V2 is not primarily about war. However war plays quite a big role in this game (not as much as in HOI though). Even the devs have shown this by portraying a battle on its front cover with Bismarck in his General's outfit; so in such a case the Pickelhaube seems to fit even more with the central theme given to the game. Its just my opinion though...

Tophat obviously. The entire historical period basically revolves around the tophat taking over from the crown. To me the pickelhaube just represents the old order clinging to militarism as a last resort to justify their waning power.

But that's just me overthinking this Serious Business.

That's quite a nice top hat icon you got there; a nice alternative to the Pickelhaube. However, the top hat will probably make V2 look more like a tailor shop for wedding suits rather than a grand strategy game. The Pickelhaube represents better the dominant paternalistic and military elite who held the real power in those times.

As opposed to the industrialists and capitalists that drove the industrial revolution and the great advances of the Victorian era, which the top hat represents?

The top-hat basicly IS the victorian era, everybody wore it and nobody did before or since (to that extent anyway).

But then again, the pickelhaube is wicked awesome.

Well, actually the industrialists and capitalists towed the line and supported the political and military elite. The big industrialists such as Krupp and Vickers needed wars so that they could sell their products to the various governments and thus make huge profits. The politicians and military dominated elite of the 19th century gave them those wars. Industrialists poured a lot of money in research so that they could constantly churn out new products, forcing governments to upgrade their arsenals, hence vastly contributing to the arms race. Capitalists provided the funds so that industrialists can produce wealth - it was a vicious cycle.

Maybe the Pickelhaube and the top hat should be combined to create some sort of hyper-Victorian headgear? :D

Well to be precise it was the time when capitalists exploited workers. The welfare state was inexistant and workers had little to no benefits. It was Bismarck actually who introduced the first welfare state (another reason to have the Pickelhaube :D ). This was also the time when child slavery was still widespread and it also explains why Karl Marx developed a very extreme economic model in response to Capitalist excesses of the time.

Actually WW1 contributed to give more rights to workers especially to women (it helped the universal suffrage). In the 19th century wars are very important as Bismarck or Cavour and Garibaldi would have never united their respective countries if they had not gone to war. ;)

19th century was the golden age of bourgeois and top hat was the symbol of bourgeois. It was the definition of class, modernity and everything hip and cool of the age. Even kings and emperors wore it. All the cool guys wore it:

http://i47.tinypic.com/2j1k5sl.jpg
http://i46.tinypic.com/2mpwebs.jpg
http://i460.photobucket.com/albums/qq329/lea81z/NapoleonIII/napoleon-iii-eugenie-c-1865.jpg

The only remotely important person who wore pickelhaube is that guy with the funny moustache and no fashion sense.

You still disagree? Tell it to these gentlemen:

It is interesting to note that Paradox always gave a very militaristic image of this game - for instance:

Victoria --> The name of the game is a monarch who probably had more wars in her lifetime than any other British monarch (although she had the longest reign, Britain was almost constantly at war during her reign).

Victoria Beta forum icon --> The Victoria Cross - the highest military decoration in the British armed forces.

Revolutions front cover --> Depicted a British redcoat with pith helmet (alluding to the numerous colonial wars during Victoria's reign) in a belligerent stance.

Revolutions forum icon --> once again a military symbol. The pith helmet which symbolizes the British Empire and therefore its might at its peak.

Victoria 2 front cover --> it depicts a battle and Bismarck wearing his Prussian generals' uniform inspiring his brethren.

Given that the overall theme for Victoria has consistently been a military one (at least on the facade), i doubt Paradox will now revert to a civil symbol such as the top hat. However having said this we might be surprised.........what do you think? ;)
