I hardly play anymore, but...

It is a tie between Turkey and Bavaria.

Turkey and Bavaria, you may ask?

But of course.

Turkey- all the reasons already mentioned, plus a keen historical interest.

Bavaria- middle of europe, nice ways to expand... Like when Wurtemburg and Wurzburg go protestant... :D And it gets nice leaders....

to amend my earlier post....

i am getting great enjoyment and challenge playing the "horse powers": hungary, crimea/gh/astrkahan/siberia. these countries are resource poor, trade challenged, have great powers as neighbours and lack easily defensible frontiers.

one of the challenges of irony of playing the horse powers is that its easy, at first, to expand, but as a consequence, everyone nearby starts to hate you. if you are not careful, the bb wars set in early, and before you know it, you are being overrun from all sides. yech.

France.
Very rich, and you get both conquest and setllement exploration.
Lots of strategic choices: break the Habsburg encirclement by force, break its encirclement by political means, or go for the west and colonize, or go east to conquer germany, or go east to get rich india before england does.

I still want to try my native Netherlands in a campaign.

Holland is probably the most played by me, because it is cool, has g;) , is the closest to my home country I'll EVER get (Belgium), and has access to sweet little old HRE!!! However, colonisation is annoying...

To colonise TOO much is boring, and to not colonise AT ALL is interesting, as you face the bigger nations (like the destructive Turks, the tiny german states, and THE SUICIDAL SPANISH NETHERLANDS!!!)...

Too bad you can't make revolts to create Belgium 30y too early (1820 was creation, NORMALLY)...

I just LOVE holland too because they have the chance of getting nice HRE vassals too (i.e. Hessen, Hannover, Köln...being Cologne, and Kleves, etc.)

Try it... You'll LOVE IT!!!

I got to say that I have a weak spot for the Teutonic Order and the Knights of St John…Don’t quite know why, though. However, in these forums people seem to really dislike these countries (and admittable they both have a really lousy starting position!).

not true perry. both knightly orders have been subject to more than one well written and well received AARs.

you are right about them having weak starting positions. but the more experience you get with the game, the more attractive the weak countries become.

I haven't played with Hungary yet, but my anticipation is that I will like simply because 'A Hungarian and Pole are two brothers', as they say. I'll let you know by the end of the week after I get a chance to fiddle around with Hungary.
