Well, other than Fantasia, the only country I *have* played is England. Mostly because I had gotten a pretty good handle on how to play it in the original board game. While EU1 is different than that, the winning approach(es) is(/are) still much the same, as I currently have a 449 pt. lead over Spain (and *they* just won a war!

U can expand in just about every direction, all ur neighbours are ur enemies, u get a shiteload of good generals and good events.

It is Austria because it is in center of Europe you can expand in almost every direction, you need to fight your way if you want ports and there is dosen of little sweat nations that just stand there and wait for you to annex them

"Major" powers are too easy. Denmark has some interesting gameplay issues - when/how to deal with Sweden, when to convert to Protestantism, whether to colonise or not, whether to expand by military annexation of minor Baltic/German states (and how to deal with BB wars and deteriorating relations with major powers Russia, Aust, Pol-Lith which you may soon share borders with)...

It'd probably be a tie for me. Russia and Austria. Russia... cheap infantry and easy expansion. Austria I play when I want a bit more of a challenge, and with it youre in the middle of europe with many small germany countries ready for the taking.
usually any 1 or 2 province minor-- i find the most enjoyment making that a world power over a few centuries. i dont like playing the majors too much, as it can turn into a world conquest type cakewalk, which is not too exciting after the first time.
Russia.
Cheap infantry, and once you smash the Khanates and Sibir, you have many, many options, from colonizing Siberia to having CB's on practically all of your neighbors for whenever you feel like a war. Also, being Orthodox, it's easy to align yourself with nearly any Christian alliance and gobble up chunks of Turkey when they DoW them In every game I've played as Russia, I've ended up driving the Turk completely from the Balkans and making it mine (well, except for whatever my allies take.)
On the other side, playing Turkey and Persia is fun as well.

The Knights.
Great leaders (and nice default ones), everyone around you (nearby) are your enemies and you can easily expand, collecting a couple of CoTs and then go on to dominating as large parts of the world as you like

I can't decide. It's either Turkey, France, or Austria. Turkey has a nice central location in the world with plenty of cheap troops, but France and Austria are right next to the HRE...
