Isn't it odd how you can be the mastermind of enormous invasions, crusades, and general wars, and never have to set foot on the battlefield? Especially in an era when kings/leaders were more than expected to do so?
I got this idea while watching GoT - the part where cowardly King Joffrey is debating whether to stay with the men or retreat to his mum. When he chose the latter, the morale effect was obvious.
Wouldn't it be cool if, after a few years of a long, hard-fought war (or if your capital is being besieged), your men could call you from the battlefield to lead them?
Then, when you do risk your life for their sakes, they receive a morale boost for a certain period of time. Since you're risking your life, I think the benefits should be huge: the ability to gain command competencies/abilities, to gain martial levels, to gain the brave and ambitious traits, for your vassals to receive a strong opinion boost of you for the duration of your time on the battlefield, etc.
It would be too easy to circumvent this by simply removing your character from action as soon as you've placated your men, so perhaps it locks you into being a commander for a year. There could be a similar safeguard in which, if your unit doesn't see action for months (because you're hiding from the front-lines) you could gain the craven trait.
