I just got an Agricultural Revolution event that can give me +2 Base Tax! :)

...In a wrong-religion province where I'm only making 0.5% progress per month. :(

Alternatively, when you sight a comet after declaring a war, without any CB, and breaking the truce. Ha! You can't hurt me!

In 150 years of constant warfare, I have not lost a single province against the HRE-Russia super alliance as the Commonwealth. It seems that the HRE or the Russians would declare war after every truce. 75% of my armies are now mercenaries since my manpower cant replenish fast enough. The Commonwealth spent hundreds of thousands of lives defending against the invaders from the East and the West.

Then in 1817, 4 years before the game ends, after a disastrous war, I finally had to concede a single province to the HRE. I can hold my head high knowing that I only lost a single province, and that the Commonwealth remains strong and free.

My King dies 2 months later, and the HRE inherits the Commonwealth throne. EDIT: not inherit, but I was put under a PU

I deleted the ironman save file. The end.

used austria super diplo annexing to get every western nation except castile annexed. Use good ole conquest to take most of spain from castile. Gaining 600 ae against them in the process. Random PU forms under my 80 year old king. For 1 full year every western nation was annexed or under one throne. King dies with a 2 year old heir (you dog you). Castile breaks the PU when a 13 year regency shall reign. Followed in short order by "quest for independance" -6 stab hit, everything starts to fall apart.

the year is 1760. no amount of save scumming can get that king to live to 93, and thus save the PU in time to finish annexing before 1821. Again I failed.

When I as Scandinavia have constant wars with France for at least 250 years only for in early 1820 to get a PU with France (without RM, just for same dynasty, which we shared with Bavaria)

My recent irony would be my Friesland game. I intent to chill out and colonize until 1.3 come. I end up entangle with HRE politic anyway. Doing it with out Diplomacy NI really hurt. I collapse myself into Monarchy, vassalize electors. go 13/8 relation on regular basis, finally attain emperorship and form Netherlands. While I'm in process of unpissed half of HRE members and push for reform, this happen.

Seriously, Should I beat the Emperor and go back to my Republic business or I should beat the republic and go all the way with HRE ?
A dutch republic bonus is so juicy it is hard to pass up though. I assume this event will fire only once right ?
Any suggestion ?? ^^"

Playing as England, I bled through my nose to end the Hundred Years War by ceding every province to France. Exactly a hundred years later, I end up leading a PU with France that happened literally out of the Big Blue.

As a united Ireland (that had yet to tag switch to Ireland proper) and Scotland, invading rump England. Why was this ironic, you ask? I was using religious CB based on the fact that I was Protestant and they were Catholic!

I don't have a screenshot, but as GB I made it to 1698 with things going great. I had been preparing long and hard for a showdown with the unified HRE-French-Dutch alliance. It was going to be close as my only ally was Sweden and my random PU Holstein.

We declare war. Things start off according to plan. Then Oliver Freaking Cromwell shows up and the whole country goes to hell. Thankfully, I had saved up about 10K ducats, so I hired an enormous mercenary force to secure GB, while using my standing army to lure the HRE into the Straits of Denmark, where I picked them apart piecemeal. This was in 1.1. Still, I wish I had screenshots of the French and Dutch doomstacks sieging Calais, which had a level 5 fort and a march. I think the siege timer was like 130 days or something haha.

just as the Civil War ended, I got Liberalism, which was more of an annoyance than anything else at that point.

United Japan (as Japan) and was happily colonizing Africa. Made a contact with Portugal between Morocco and Mali, early 16th century. With one year left prior to coring for both of us, my nice 6 admin ruler dies and is replaced with a princess with 1/2/1 stats. How can you kill a ruler who wouldn't go near a battlefield? Well, I curse and continue, just to be attacked by Korea while all of my forces are fighting natives in Africa... And they have superior tech and generals :(

As the Ottomans, I planned for 5 years to make a heretic Oman like me and become my vassal (involving the conquest of a rival province), but Oman vassalized OPM Haasa literally in the month before I ask for vassalization, making the vassalization impossible.

Have to choose between sticking with the -1 diplomatic relations penalty for 25 more years or taking 1 stab hit for ending the royal marriage and sabotaging all the relations with Oman, making vassalization impossible for the next 50 years.

I think the most ironic thing here is the fact that half of the cases mentioned in this thread are not ironic. I blame Alanis Morisette.

I recently had that happen in my Byzantine game. I was just abobut to diplo-vassalize 2-province Ukraine (formed by polish rebels) when Muscovy ended their war with Lithuania by forcing them to return 5 Ukrainian Cores. Now like you I'm stuck with the Royal Marriage, and a youthful Ukrainian king who's already sired an heir.

I think the most ironic thing here is the fact that half of the cases mentioned in this thread are not ironic. I blame Alanis Morisette.

Long time lurker here but I could not stop myself. Great stories all though :)
Indeed. Maybe the irony is that we would expect the posters not to be fools...but they are! Hmm...still don't think that counts as ironic, just stupid. I blame that cheeky Lithuania. Always causing...trouble?.

...

Ok, here's my genius adequate contribution to the cause of irony:
As Sweden, shortly after winning my war of Independence against Denmark, I got the "National Epic" event.
Yes! Write me a tale of a great and glorious Swedish king of yore, tell me the brave heroic deeds of...Christian III von Wittelsbach? *executes bard for treason*
