on number 160 in a pocket from konigsberg to kiev to moscow to leningrad. but probably best was 65 at kiev to begin the war took a precisely timed crossing heading back from karkhov . On WIF USSR had 550 units so was alot of oppurtunitys for encirclements :). Sometimes funny when the "pocket" has more troops and fighting ablity than the "encirclers" start to wonder who really is encircled

242 on the Moscow-Stalingrad line. That was in '51 when the SU had about 1500 divisions.
Not much yet gave me a huge advantage in the southern region. Then I went on and encirclered about 600 in the Moscow - Archangelks line. Then it wss a cakewalk.

Greetings, how viable is it to encircle (cut-off mainly..) every enemy division by just encircling its capital?
Of course, capitals are usually rich provinces worth conquering, but when you capture the original capital of your enemy, it transfers to another province, which may be undeveloped and of no strategical importance. By encircling the "new" capital, don't you cut off all supplies to the enemy formations everywhere else in the world?

I tried this as German against the Russians (whose capital was now deep behind the Urals :D ), but they kept conquering nearly provinces with "stealthy" militia (which didn't appear on the map until they had captured my provinces), so I abandoned my devious plan.. :(

To be on topic, as 1944 Soviets, I cornered the Germans in the Baltics, destroying 39 divisions (Totenkopf, Wiking and 2 HQs among them). How depressing for the Germans now.. How will they put up a decent fight now?

Yes. While massive encirclements are considered a bit gamey, surrounding a capital is very gamey. It will indeed put all their units out of supply. HoI3 has already addressed this according to Johan, so that is a good thing. :)

how am i ever going to top that kind of wicked shit?

well, the most i ever did was cut off the entire russian continent in half vertically, one province west of Moscow. so, should that count as surrounding the capital? i wouldnt think so:rolleyes:

the result: by 1942 the russians had 290 vs my 170. 3 months later the russians had 49.

it was a very very very bitter peace for the russians (but then again, Stalin can simply crap out a new 10000 militias. Hum... that just gave me an idea...)

(goes to play SU)

I got 180 or so Indian units in Armageddon playing as Australia once - with three cavalry divisions. In another Armageddon game as the USNA, I encircled all but three Confederate divisions in one move, cutting off almost all of inland North America.

In my first game as USSR, still learning the game, i was getting seriously kicked back, and the Germans had advanced: In the north, just out Leningral. In the middle - north, just outside Moscow (fighting their, and also in the nearby provinces). In the south, at taht time they had actually broken my defences, had gone far behind Stalingrand, 2-3 provinces away from Bacu etc.

Then, with the divisions i had benn making, i launched an amphibious attack in Sevastapool and then Starting pushing from Moscow towards there (Not straight though, but in a curve). This resulted in the encirclement of the bulk of the German army by that time, almost all their armour, and around 150 divisions or so...

I don't know the names of provinces, and am too lazy to fire up the game and look, but...

GC 36, unmodded, as Germany, I managed to catch the entire front of the Russian forces stationed west of the big river just east of the Polish border.

Started with an amphib landing of 3 corps of Marines to take Leningrad.
Had 9 divs of cav, 9 divs of Mnt inf and 18 divs of inf to open the northern breach.

Had 15 armor, 21 MoT and 18 inf to open the southern breach.

Had 9 inf per province along the front between the two breaches. This line was backed up by 9 cav, 12 MoT as counter attack help and exploitation taker-advantage-ofers.

Inf broke the hole open at both extremes of the line. Cav crossed over the river to the north and swept south to prevent Ruskies from retreating. No effort was made to stop the Ruskies from reinforcing, though.

Mnt Inf and inf swung up to the riverline and began to squeeze the Ruskies southward. My armor went through and just kept going east. MoT swung up to the riverline, along with inf support and started the squeeze to the north.

6 wings of TAC kept the Ruskies low on org where ever I was putting main attack effort.

Got the pocket sealed up and kept squeezing it. TAC wings got split into 2 duties as the pocket condensed. Half stayed on org attack, the other half went to str attack.

The horsies and MoTs backing the primary line were needful a few times for counter attacking but for the most part, the destruction of the Ruskies went like clockwork.

When it was done, the north access of reinforcement for the Ruskies was sealed off by the Marines in Leningrad. Armor and MoTs were running rampant all over the south half of the Ruskie lands. My Mnt inf kept pushing along the northern half along with a clutch of inf to back em up. Horsies ranged all over the backfield to keep insurrectioners from insurrectioning.

Only real enemy after that was old man winter and he wasn't so turrible as to make any difference. And he'd been no issue at all if I hadn't dragged my feet and put so much effort into keeping a contiguous line of inf. The massive counter attack I expected from the Ruskies never came.

Of course, I only play on norm/norm so, you hard core types probably just laugh at my "great victory".

I think the biggest encirclements you can do are directly related to the USSR/GER. Lots of land and lots of troops... :)

I encircled and destroyed just under 300 SOV divisions in one encirclement for my operation barbarossa. Took me about 1 month to close the pocket down to the marsh provinces. From there, I had to wait several more months before I could actually destroy them. Attacking with ~24 INF divisions versus around 300, even out of supply, needs to wait for their org to hit near 0 before you can eliminate them. My goal was to trigger the BP before winter, but I had to hold off a little to make sure I destroyed all the encircled troops before the trigger.

I tried one once as Japan vs Nat Chi. I was too aggressive and had my troops spread out too thin. The Chinese were able to punch through a spot in my line, cut off my supply and killed half of my 80 INF divisions. Needless to say, I was unable to conquer china in that game and I never recovered.
