Looks like so far we mostly have German encirclements, which is understandable, especially against vanilla. Province landings, btw, don't really count, though it is always nice. :D The best is those one province landing stacks of 50+ that are late enough in the game to make an excellent nuke target, but I digress. :)

Very cool to hear about the China encirclement of 90 Japanese divisions, that is a nice feat! Did you have them in a pocket without supplies? How long did it take to collapse? In game terms, I'm not sure that there is a harder encirclement to make than NAT against JAP?

In all of my china games I end up encircling the Japanese. Usually there's two big ones, the first one happens when Japan starts to break through Beijing and overrun the the north plains. It's easy to hold the mountain and desert provinces along the Mongolian border so the japanese are forced to go through the center. I just stack 24 troops in Yucheng and pound north along the coast through Tianjin which is plains and hit Changde where the front narrows to just two provinces. The Japanese have to move through to provinces and I only have to move through one so I get there first with more org. I time an attack on Erenhot at the same time and the Japanese lose a little over ten divisions in the north China plain. After that, I move from Changde west towards Jinxi, making another pocket (though it's still supplied from the coast) in Tangshan. I move west as quickly as I can to cut off the korean border and push towards Harbin and the other Manchukuo VP's with the other half of my army. When I annex Manchukuo the entire Japanese land army is cut off in manchuria in one giant pocket with 30 - 40 divisions.

As I can´t beat your mega-pockets by numbers I try this: Two special encirclements come to my mind.
First: As Nat Spain in Algeria: 2-3 inf and two tanks encircled and destroyed Five French in Oman, with one tank beeing attacked by more French troops outside the pocket, but holding the province long enough. That was a close call ;)
Second: As SU I have built a few (36) mountain divisions. In winter 41/42 those troops walk through the enemy lines like there are no enemies and manage to encircle and destroy several provinces. Twice. Half the static winter-front of Germany completely destroyed. ´42 was a boring walk-through to the Atlantic coast :D

Interesting. I don't think I have ever played NAT before. I ought to try sometime. :) I didn't realize beating Japan was so easy, since when playing as Japan, running through NAT is so easy.

Once encircled 72 British and allied divs in Sukkur India, playing as Nipponese. I had attacked from Afghanistan and India via Burma to net them...

Here's a favorite of mine, from my second AAR:

80 divisions in that province (Dax) so, with brigades, that's about 1 million Germans. I still smile thinking about it.

I am a newbie trying to understand the concept of encirclement. Almost every time I try, they manage to break it.

In your case, if France attacked Lyon from Mulhouse, Chaumont, and ...-Saone, they would probably beat you, right? How come they don't break the encirclement then?

Because all the divisions inside the encirclement are out of supply and I am guessing (since it wasnt me playing :p ) that alot of those 40 div's in Mulhouse and Chaumont are at low Org. Further, you can see that reinforcements are ariving from north.

I'm not an encirclement kind of guy. I'm more like the "force them back through numbers and firepower, and then bomb them to bits" kind of guy.

I suppose you play as USSR often, then? ;)

When I was still new at the game I one "pocketed" about 200 German divisions in Berlin - I then had to let it sit for about 2 years until I got a nuke

trying to take on 200 divisions in an urban province is horrible!

Especially if its the capital and they are all still in supply. You should have strategic bombed the province to 0 ic and logistical striked it until it had no ifrastructure, although if they had a large enough supply stockpile it would still have taken forever.

Meh, I rarely make big conventional encirclements, but I like this one none the less, it was quite emotional at the time. Notice how the Americans getting evacuated actually allowed me to finish it

Right, so if you want to do a great encirclement, you have to attack the large stacks first, to ensure they have low org? And only then go around them with some of your well organised men? That would require you to hugely outnumber them, right?

I was UK, helping defend Poland against a massive Soviet offensive. The Poles got pushed back, lost Warsaw, and were holding on to Silesia...
when I broke through at Elbing...

Several days later, I broke through at Lwow. As some of my troops raced on east, the rest encircled the Soviet spearheads. Including 20+ soviet armoured divisions.

90+ soviet divisions encircled.

Just go read Fatherland. I must have had a fair few 100 division plus pockets. I guess the "Western Military District", "Persia" and "Western China" would be my favourites.
