The difference with "fortification" infantry is the softness. Basically give them a hardness bonus for the fact that they dig into the terrain beyond what a normal "garrison" would do. Yes, you can build land/sea forts ... but the troops that the Japanese stationed on Pacific islands, and the ones the Germans had along the Channel, were active parts of the fortification process. If the HoI3 combat system makes attacking fortified/dugin troops tougher, though, this may not be needed at all. Maybe have a leader trait the opposite of "fortress buster" instead - give them a fortification bonus - I dunno. It's just kind of a let down sometimes when playing US how easy it is to roll up the Japanese-held islands in HoI2.

The difference between "light" inf and marines or mountain is the training time and organization. It's cheaper to churn out light-inf than specially trained troops, but they don't perform quite as well as "commando" type units either.

I agree, I don't think the light inf bde has to be represented by the more elite soldiers. In many suggestions in this thread, the light inf bde is based more around a difference in equipment rather than trg and experience. The mtn, marine and para bdes still have their places.

In fact, why bother with a war?

I think I shall spend 1936-45 'training' this new brigade...

Still bicycle soldiers are too similar to cavalry. Both ride some thing into battle the only difference is calvalry ride horses and cyclists ride bicycles.

Cavalry consumes more supplies then cyclist. Especially if there is no forage available.

Cavalrymen can eat their mounts of out of supply.

Cavalry can operate in areas with no metaled roads, like the Ukraine and Russian theaters. Mountain Bikes as a mass production equipment item are post WWII. A horse is deep snow or mud in Russia could still operate to some degree, a bicycle was useless and became a burden on the owner.
A cavalrymen who has to dismount can still walk the horse with supplies on the horse. A Bicyclist who has to dismount for bad terrain has to carry his supplies AND the bike!

Great pic ... but (1) why was that camerman allowed to take an upskirt pic of military personel and (2) it's nice that they're marching in formation and all, but their shoes don't match, don't they have government-issued CFM shoes?

Good looking yes.

As for Drill an Ceremony......they all hold their hands and thumbs differently, the hats are on at different angles, they are looking at each other, the ground, the crowd, the dress right is not in line...in short they look like my old basic training unit on our first day of drill.....we would have been drilling 7x24 for weeks if we went out in public marching like that!

But with legs like those...all faults can be forgiven :)

Still would your motor cycles start consuming fuel; And if they do then they would end up becoming completely inferior to mechanized infantry, because they will have no advantages over them. At least regular infantry don't consume fuel.

Mech is more limited to the terrain/roads. Motor cycles would go down any footpath threw woods/jungles/mountains much easier and faster. Also they can spread out in open terrain so ambush would be much harder than against mech.

Still how could you represent that better in the game. A few rough terrain bonuses wouldnt make up for the fact that the motor cycles aren't armored like APC's or halftracks. Also the motor cycles can't have weapons on them like halftracks and APCs can.

I don't think Japanese used anything akin to German fortress troops in Pacific. They were mainly, in game terms, just normal infantry units (or possibly marines) serving as garrisons. There seem to have been brigade sized formations akin to 'fortress infantry' in Manchuria at least, though.

The extra hardness is a quite good point however, but it shouldn't go to any specific unit. On operation scale, things like heavy artillery, AT guns, bazookas, tanks etc. were quite useful, even neccesary, for attack on well fortified position. As such, it would be nice if digging in and fortifications gave you some hardness. Say 0,5% for every dug-in level and 2% for every fort level. It shouldn't reduce you below softness of 40% or so IMO. Ie. it should mainly benefit the soft units, not the ones that are hard already.

Air Units ANyone

If this HOI3 is going to have a better air representation then you need anti-air support. Mech Inf recon? Remember - Find them first, hold them second and then kick the stuffings out of them third. that is assuming HOI3 is going to do a better job of solving Combat on a realistic level.
