I wish I could get into Vicky. I bought it a couple years ago, but I am just not that interested in that period in history. Plus, I like to kind of start from nothing & build up, but most of the nation's in Vicky are well established by the time the game starts. I do like the idea of pops though. I like how they work in Stellaris, & I think in Vicky they are a lot more detailed so that would be cool. Maybe I should give Vicky another shot sometime.
I didn't like the period either at first, but when I got into it it became interesting. If you want to start from nothing and build up, I can give you a couple of options:
1. Start as a latin american nation and build up an industry so big that you become a serious contender for the status of powerhouse of the new world (Colombia could be nice, you have the site of the panama canal and the potential of forming Gran Colombia which gives some room for expansion).
2. Start as a European country, preferably one that's young (Greece or something, they start with a bad financial situation as well, extra challenge) and jump into the colonial game - partaking in the scramble for Africa and colonizing indochina.
3. A mix of those - for example Brazil partaking in the scramble for Africa.
4. Taking the helmet of a country that historically failed (Boer states for example, or a mediumpower like Bavaria that got swallowed into Prussian influence).
5. The hardcore option - start as Luxembourg and use their special property (German primary culture, French accepted) to form Großdeutschland and annex France.
Furthermore I recommend you pick up a mod like the New Nations Mod for it's immense amount of new events that really give you the feeling of not just playing a conquering game but really running a government. Probably 500 of my almost 650 hours played was with either PoD or NNM or a slightly self-amended version of it.
I must confess though that I haven't played the game for a while - it's a bit aged sadly and if you compare it with EU4, HoI4 or even CK2, it can't really compete, aesthetically alone...
