Hi all,

I've been playing a bit of vanilla (all expansions) lately but want to branch out - looking for some mods that enhance and add depth to the general gameplay without completely overhauling it or the setting, or further bewildering the AI.

What mods of this sort are still updated & balanced as of July 2016, which ones play nicely together? It's been probably a couple years since I've used any so not sure which of the big ones are still maintained.

Just as background, I'm much more of a roleplaying/historical stories/character type player rather than world conqueror, so anything that contributes to the little stories which develop (IMO with a little imagination those can be created by mechanics just as well as text windows & event strings) is great.

Thanks!

CK2+ is the best all round mod that enhances the game without fundamentally changing it. HIP is much bigger and more complex but I really don't like what they did to the interface and map.

Check the Modding forum, there are heaps there including a post that summarizes all the majors.

These are all the mods I use and why. All are on the steam workshop and super easy to get going. None have big effects that change the core mechanics of the game.

A Revolutionary Borders Mod: Makes the borders nicer to look at

Art Replacement Mod: Pretty pointless, just changes the loading screen art, but it IS pretty

Better Looking Garbs: This is huge, and changes more than just clothes. It allows hair styles to be used by cultures that wouldn't normally have them, and adds in a few, as well as new clothes. Cardinals have red hats. For example Polish culture uses the generic faces but the Russian only hair. So they become unique from both.

Coat of Arms Editor Expansion: After the regular selections you can change your CoA to lots of the restricted choices. You can't change the colors on the new ones but you can mix and match.

Less Common Nicknames: Because not everyone needs to have a nickname. Sometimes you just want the III or IV

Nickname Removal: Incase that's not enough, you now have an option to just get rid of the one you've been giving. No more long lines of Fowlers.

No Hassles Vassals: If you win an invasion or crusade or jihad you can use this to distribute all your land. You can choose which land you always want to keep by adding a "banner" to the county and that will never be given away.

I recommend the following mods:

More Councillors: Adds twenty new minor titles with voting power called "Peer" (localized to Senator in Italian and Greek speaking realms, Elector in German speaking realms, and Elder in Jewish realms) that allows you to appease powerful vassals and at the same time not compromise the quality of your inner council (Chancellor, Marshal, Steward, Spymaster, and Chaplain). It's available for kingdom and empire tier feudal, iqta, and republican realms.

Retinues Plus: Adds new building block type retinues consisting of units of pure light infantry, pure archers, pure pikemen, pure heavy infantry, pure light cavalry, and pure heavy cavalry. Ideal for building combined arms retinue armies.

Decadence Breakup (Jorlem): Makes decadence revolts more realistic by having powerful Muslim vassals declare independence after the overthrow of their former liege via a decadence revolt.
