I changed my mind. Would a mediterranean based empire based on the island of malta or Sicilia be unreasonable?
Sicily, no - Malta, yes. AFAIK Malta was just a bunch of islands with a few farmers spread around. I can't see them going Empire-building... Sicily on the other hand. They were building a little empire. A pity the Normans died out to end that...

What is the city of Malta? In EU2 it is: Valette or something but in this time it could not be so.
La Valette was founded by the Knights of St. John after the Ottoman siege in 1565. Until then their base had been at Birgu (Vittoriosa), accross the harbour of the later site of Valletta. The building of the city was made possible by lavish gifts from Christian Europe as a gratitude to their defeat of the Sultan, and was completed in a staggering 15 years!

Sicily it is then.

As for the city..is 15 years why so long? Or is that fast? The city's fortifications were built with cannonfire in mind, right?

I would very much like to rule from a fortified city but I don't know if the game addresses that really. I like forts :D I hope it is more than 'fort level 1..2..3.." but I don't know what they want to do.

I'd say it's pretty fast... The building time includes the fortifications, a cathedral and more...

I would support the notion that cities can pop up. Not however that one could build them. I doubt the kings had that kind of resources back in those days. But as I said I would love for new communities to pop up along trade routes and resource deposits.

Not kings alone but there are lords too. AFAIK there were quite many towns founded by nobles in the time of CK. They were centres of commerce of said land and would earn the owner cash instead of goods. IMO in the demesne provinces you should be able to build them yourself.

Btw how many towns/cities will there be per province, one like in EU or more? Sorry if this has already been asked.

I think instead of Sicily I'd like to play a dynasty somewhere in "Skane" province (In EU2 terms ) and work on baltic domination. There must be some nice port city around there to base oneself from to accomplish this task. Or maybe Visby?

When playing "Patrician" I like to start in Visby for exactly the same reason. You're closer to the markets of the baltic. :)

Perhaps, but I was talking cities, not towns. Towns should take quite a while before they become a blip on the map.
