I always play with mods, but only "lightweight" ones, no total overhauls, map changes etc...
Basically stuff that just adds flavor, fixes bugs or extends the vanilla experience.

Nowadays I play mostly non-historical for the fun in chaos.

The game? Pretty ok, although the amount of non-historical alt-history stuff being added (in the focus trees mostly) is kind of growing over my head lately. AI is still pretty garbage too.

Colored planes and ships make it easier for me to tell the icons apart, and the changed naval bases and air base icons also help. Other than that, vanilla but I do play old world blues and equestria at war sometimes.

Modded: Kaiserreich or The New Order, mostly. I think they're both better than vanilla experience in detail and flavour: the sandbox and World War feeling of Kaiserreich, and the narrative and politics minigames of The New Order. Vanilla HOI4 feels terribly dull to me, even after all these small and big DLCs, and I think it's terribly sad. And yes, both of these mods are Alt History, but it feels much better than vanilla Byzantine-Kaiser-Confederate, etc meme paths.

I have never once played the vanilla game as I always play with mods. The fist time I loaded the game was with a mod, The great war mod. At the minute I have a game going in the Cold war iron curtain: A world divided mod. If I want to fight in WW2 I'll load up Hearts of iron 3 as that is my go to WW2 game.

Fighting WW2 as WW2 played out is always going to be easy as you know how it went so you know what to do to win. There is never going to be challenge in that.

My thoughts.

Replaying historical ww2 can only be done few times, then you’re just repeating the same experience.

I like the unpredictability in non-historical, like in EU IV or Vic 2, but what sometimes happens in non-historical in HoI 4 is beyond my comprehension.
Like when you play peacefully preparing for - something - and then get declared randomly by a minor 1/20 of your size (like Bulgaria or Greece), this minor then joins a random Faction and calls everyone in. Even your ‘friends’ you’ve just helped with volunteers/LL etc, it ruins any remaining plausibility, and often your entire plans, the AI is dumber than a brick.

Don't really understand this mindset. If vanilla was truly that bad then mods wouldn't save it
Depends on why you think it's bad.

If you think it's bad because (e.g.) the USSR's focus tree is generally well below par compared not only to the other majors, but also compared to some minors, and that Germany's* approach to its focus tree in the face of human USSR going "off-piste" is hopeless, then that's absolutely something that can be addressed by mods, because the structure of focus trees, and the decision-making weights attached to individual focuses, are moddable.

* Everyone else in Europe also has issues to some extent, but computer Germany's behaviour when human USSR has gone for a "rush Germany" strategy greatly hastens its demise. This kind of thing is why some mods flat-out disable manual war justification.
