A decent idea I've heard for 1.22 Byz is:
-Build up navy as you generally do for a Byz start (I generally go 2 heavies and 2 galleys on top of my initial navy)
-Attempt to ally Hungary and Mamluks; only Hungary is fine for this strat
-Wait for Ottos to get into a war on the far side of Anatolia (QQ is the best; AQ, Dulkadir, and Karaman also work) so their troops aren't in Europe
-DoW promising Hungary land and bullrush Edirne; designate Hungary to siege Edirne as well and try to get Janos Hunyadi there
-Hunt down the Ottoman navy; I personally haven't lost the naval battle with the composition above
-If the Ottos come back while you are sieging Edirne, hopefully Janos is enough to at least win and keep the siege. If you lose the siege, you're screwed.
-Should you successfully take Edirne and have naval superiority, congrats! You've won the war and can get enough WS to at least connect your land (taking Edirne, Selanik, and Tirhala).
-If you were able to ally the Mamluks and call them in, you can take a stab at Anatolia if you really want to hurt the Ottos, but don't overreach yourself.
-I recommend trying to keep Hungary by at least giving them Vidin; screw the Mamluks over though.
The main issue with this strat is having to rely on Hungary having Janos Hunyadi at Edirne, but I think it's a bit easier than trying to win a solo war against Venice and you don't have to do the disgraceful action of moving your capital to Negroponte.
