I read the Byzantium thread about 1.22, and I can't seem to get anything to work anyone have any ideas? I know/understand tot try to get Hungry, and Poland as allies, I've done it every time, but then I can't get the Ottomans to attack me/ I got both Pol, and Hug once and went 50 if not more years of them, just not attacking me. Same if I just get one. I can't seem to get a defensive war.

If you ally both Hungary and Poland the AI thinks you're too strong and refuses to attack. Maximum I took was Hungary and Serbia. If you can get Austria, they too work to a certain degree, but only if they go to war.

Problem with Poland is they prevent a DoW completely then go into debt and deny the CtA at which point Ottos jump you immediately.

Though you can always ally both and call them in with favors once Ottos attack Mamluks. Seems awfully slow to me, but it's probably the easier version compared to HUN+SER.

Or you use one of the many available cheesestrats like becoming part of the HRE, Negroponte trap or straitblocking.

Edit: another option is a DoW against Mamluks. They can't take any land so you should be able to peace out for war reps when necessary. Their troops will suffice for Ottos to DoW you.

You can ally both Poland and the Memluks if they rival Otto and you have a diplo advisor. In fact I also got Hungary into this alliance when they not rival Poland. That way you'll have the delicious double front war when you attack. Everybody in the group love the idea of grabbing a bite.

How do you guys manage to ally Hungary and Poland, I never seem to get high enough modifiers to get them to accept. What's the trick behind it?

Mututal Rivals is a must (and a lottery) Going beyond forcelimit helps, developing land helps, but probably not recommended. Dip +1 advisor is a given.

It also depends on difficulty, if you play Normal it's fairly easy.

You can just call both Hungary and Poland for land and then give them none. After that its generally easy to ally someone else instead to replace the allies you lost that way.
Tried, all i could get was Hungry to come, and that turned out very bad.

Strange, both times i tried that, it worked like a charm.

Poland doesn't always rival the Ottomans and want their land, plus they tend to get into early wars elsewhere. They are not a reliable ally at all. Serbia is better, but they usually rival you. The only strong ally you can get just about every time is Hungary.

There is a bit of trick to the Negroporte tactic in that you stay close enough for them to follow you, but far enough to evade them. Eventually their army gets baited to attack you and once it does you move your fleet from port to blockade them on the land.

Starting your fleet in the sea of Marmara apparently helps the AI funnel their forces straight to the southern tip of Greece providing you're besieging their land there.

I keep hearing about the trap. But how would you even go about adding yourself to the HRE?
Ally Hungary+Poland to stay safe from Ottos and DoW Venice. Grab Negroponte, move capital, add province to the HRE. You are now an HRE prince.
The order is important because you can't move your capital after adding the province (can't move in or out the HRE).
Followed by deleting all forts and cancelling both Alliances and having Ottos DoW you because the coB bug is still alive and well.
Strange, both times i tried that, it worked like a charm.
Which patch? Because I can't remember calling in Poland for land.
But then again, Poland is the worst ally in the whole game anyways, so I avoid them like the pest and only did it once to try out some stuff.

I just played a quick game where I'm not even sure what I done. Ottomans were pretty timid and didn't really take myself or Candar out early so I grabbed them, allied Poland and Hungary some time after I expected Ottomans to already attack by this point.

Built up a fairly decent fleet only to watch Venice declare war on me, amusingly enough they got ruined because they couldn't offload their full army fast enough and their navy didn't combined may have won, but they split them up due to fighting another war with Milan probably. I won control of Venice and their allies Greek possessions with the exception of Rhodes.

Missed my chance to pounce on the Ottomans due to being in a regency while they fought QQ so I took out most of Georgia who were doing really well in the caucus region. Then Ottomans got into a second war with QQ where my alliance of Poland and Mamalukes also DoW'd them. I took control of Edirne immediately only to see Poland peace out early. (Never call them in while they're fighting another war, eh! +1 for worst ally too!)... Before I got stack wiped I managed to end the war with just Edirne and nothing else. This suited me just fun as my superior navy will win every single war in the east. I may even let them expand into Europe more giving them military access only to then choke them further.

My only issue is that my war with Georgia ended with some debts and my war with TUR ended with even more so it's either bankruptcy or slowing down. May be time to learn how to properly bankrupt myself without watching my save fold.

IDK guys. I've tried so many games and have failed. It's hard to get either Poland or Hungary to help me. Whether I get both or just one doesn't matter Otto's just won't attack me. I got a game going right now where it's 1475, and nothing is happening... On Top of that even if I get one to help me it always turns into a disaster. Not sure what to do...

Even when I do get a good game rolling something ruins it.
