I waited to buy and play common sense until they finetuned development and agressive expansion to start a new campaign in EU4

I am seriously bored of Europe (Ryukyu campaign focussed on Europe too) so I wanted something else. I briefly toyed with the idea of restarting a Ryukyu run, but first I want to get to know common sense mechanics and everything that changed since 1.9.2.

I haven’t done a campaign since 1.9.2, you see

Regarding nation to play… They nerfed horde gameplay into oblivion, people say. You can’t loot decently anymore.

Especially the Yurchen tribes in Manchuria depended on this :(

In my Ryukyu run, I saw Manchu forming, then Qing.

My curiosity has been aroused since then… I decided to play the Pagan Manchurian horde, YEREN

The goal for this campaign? Well, I’m not sure how far I’ll go with this run. Conquer Asia? World conquest? We’ll see how it goes.. I have a few secret campaign goals though ;)

Without further ado, let’s see how I fared.

Chapter 1: Opening Moves

First event of the campaign… Ducats are always welcome o_O

I allied Oirat. Korchin allied Jianzhou. Korchin, Haixi, Jianzhou and Korea all rivalled me. Hrmpf. Bring it on

Our head shaman foresaw a glorious victory against the other Yurchen tribes…

I attacked Korchin and made Jianzhou full co-belligerent. I always like fighting against superior numbers

I used the ducats from the event to make a 15k army. I invaded Jianzhou and Korchin can do whatever.

First observation in 1.13.1: Its hilariously easy to occupy stuff in nations without forts. Only capital needs more then a month to siege up.

Strategy: Place an army large enough to scare other nations on the capital of the nations that joined the war. Make separate peace with all those nations first, then focus on the war target nation.

I occupied all the provinces of Jianzhou, and their navy got forced to fight mine again, after winning initial naval encounter, in the same month as the first battle occurred. I made sure the coastal provinces got occupied just in time for that.. Blubblub Jianzhou.

Korchin sieged up my homeland. Be my guest

Meanwhile, Haixi allied Korea. Haixi invaded Jianzhou aswell. Korchin got dragged into a war versus Korea and Haixi, along with the war versus me. This will be a nice diversion for Jianzhou and Korchin armies :D

I simply finished occupying entire Jianzhou, without anyone interfering..

Things got complicated. My own capital got sieged up by Korchin, but in return I could occupy and siege entire Korchin without a fight. AI doesn’t have its priorities straight I guess

They *seemed* to be willing to lift the siege I did on their capital… So I moved all my troops towards it.
Korea attacked Jianzhou army. That army was trying to lift the siege of its capital.

I got a lucky finish of the Korchin capital siege at 7%, and their army couldn’t catch my siege stack. Instead, it went towards the Jianzhou capital, because Korea lost the fight there.

Korchin managed to beat the Jianzhou army… This really worked out well. But I still occupied the Jiangzhou capital. Haixi fought for naught. Stupid AI not getting its priorities straight I guess?

And because of that, Korchin got vassalised by Yeren, without ANY fight versus my troops o_O

Right. Korchin isn’t a Yurchen tribe, hence I can safely vassalise them.

Time to peace out. I took Jianzhou capital, along with all their provinces that are in outer-manchuria (I looked up on the eu4 wiki what provinces are considered outer and inner manchuria, for the 'unite Jurchen tribes' national decision.

Why? The idea here is to form Manchu.
You need the capital of the other two Yurchen tribes cored for this decision.

Forming Manchu gives claims on outer Manchuria (all the provinces I take here) and cores on Inner Manchuria.

I also vassalised the remains of Jianzhou, to be dragged into a war versus Korea and Haixi. I am dragged in, because I vassalise a nation who is at war with other nations. I called Oirat into my war, since i am the defensive warleader now.
Crazy move? We’ll see. Oirat finished off some peasant rebels in Yeren.

Korea army was in the north part of Haixi when I made peace. They immediately went for my capital and started a siege. Good :p

I’ll siege THEM up then ;)

I’ll let you in on a secret. My Khan is a general, and he got 3 (THREE!) siege pips.

He’s a sieging expert, and he managed to siege up two of the Korean forts (including their capital) before Korea could finish the siege on my capital. Haixi tried to lift the siege on one of them. To no avail

Observation: SIEGE pips on generals are incredibly powerful now early game, especially in regions where nations only have capital forts.

I saw Jianzhou rebels were close to spawning. Time to make peace with Korea.

I asked all ducats from Korea and war reparations. Could have asked more.. But Korea is not co-belligerent. The plan was to invade them later, with tribal feud CB (I border them).

Note that I didn’t start coring any of the former Jianzhou provinces. I tried lifting the sieges there before rebels spawned, and before the army of Korea in the north makes it back to their provinces and comes back for me…

The rebels spawned, right when Haixi army just arrived there to lose black flag status (they came from Korea fort remember).

I fight versus rebels defensively now, in mountain territory. Tough luck rebels :D

I immediately placed my entire army on the Haixi capital. They were afraid to attack, and the Haixi army went for my capital

3 siege pips are OP. I am already at 7% on Haixi capital before they arrive in my own capital.

This event can trigger when a pagan nation (like yeren) has a neighbouring vassal that has this or that specific religion (think its buddhism, hindu and muslim, feedback appreciated).

We honor our ancestors and stay Pagan! For obvious reasons. Yeren took the ‘vision quest’ national decision now, for more yearly prestige.

Haixi didn’t get the chance of finishing the siege before I did this

I took capital of Haixi and all their gold. I started coring the two capitals and hired a theologian for the next pagan ‘national decision’ that gives -1 unrest until 1821.

I lowered maintenance, and let my war exhaustion tick away for a few years.

The two capitals of the other Yurchen tribes got cored, and I qualified now to enact the ‘unite Yurchen tribes’ national decision, that switches my nation into Manchu. This gives me extra 25 prestige, which finished my ‘improve my prestige’ mission for another +1 stability ;)

This decision also creates Manchu cores on the remaining land of Haixi, and claims on the (pagan) provinces I took from Jianzhou. After my warscore ticked away, I started coring the Jianzhou provinces.

I also qualified for the ‘enforce our heritage’ national decision now, since forming Manchu switched my religion to Confucianism. This decision gives missionary strength until 1821.

I started converting the shamanist provinces.

Buryatia was improving relations with Oirat. If they ally, that would be bad. Hence, I attacked. They have a gold mine! Gimme

I baited them to attack, and routed them. Easy War.

I finished sieging them, when this happened

The crappy stat Khan died, and his heir wasn’t 15 yet. Then you get a new Khan, who has guaranteed minimum stats of 3/3/3. The new Khan is a 5/3/4. Not bad

I did a plain full annexation of Buryatia, and started coring them. This gives me tribal feud cb versus Mongolia.

I conquered all my relevant neighbours within 10 years more or less..

Can you guess my next target?

Hope you enjoyed this first chapter!

P.s: My save for this campaign got de-ironmanned due to a bug. I restarted the campaign, and I'm trying to get (more or less) the same end result as chapter 1.

Hurray, atwix is back! Looking forward to what you get up to and how crazy it might get. I'm subbed!

And yes, especially in early game, a lot of wars can be won or manipulated by sieging. Yesterday I won a war (in Europe, but the point stands), by outsieging two co-billigerents that were too strong for me. They were trying to siege one of my fords, all troops together in a 24 stack, I had around 15 troops. I managed to bait them off every time by pretending to march on the war goal, (which they were desperate to prevent) resetting their siege progress just by moving one province, then running away which caused the AI to go back to sieging my fort, while a minimum siege took care of the capital. I managed to kick out two opponents this way without fighting them. Because I would have lost that fight...

my save got de-ironmanned. Likely because I clicked 'single player' while game was still calculating version on main menu.

Campaign says ironman: no now.

Ironman progress lost.

Seems the workaround is to keep backup of old eu4 files on steam userdata; I didn't do that.

Campaign lost......

I thought they fixed all bugs?!

Pretty angry now.. lost more then 50 hours of play.

I can continue the save without ironman I guess, but I don't like the game forcing me to do this.

I'll think on what to do next....

I'd hate to restart now, I had nice progress :(

I'll just restart I guess.

Grmble.

Well, unless you aim for an achievement, you could just play ironmanless. You're reputable enough that people trust you won't save-scum if you say you didn't. 50 hrs is a lot :(

If you're restarting with Yeren, you can consider reforming before taking the Manchu decision, this will then allow you to be in Muslim tech group. As it is, if you form Manchu > Qing, you'll be in the Chinese tech group.

I tend to vassalise and then scutage Buryatia, since I don't want to face the inflation. Korea is a favourite target for humiliation.

forming manchu doesn't change you to chinese tech. Thats the qing decision. If you form manchu, you stay nomad tech.

So you can blob like mad as manchu with tribal feud until 1550 or so, finish admin idea group and reform when you are out of easy nations to conquer..

I looked at the screenshots of my first yeren campaign and i am still furious my save got de-ironmanned.

Looked it up, and it seems MANY ironman players had this happen, even two-three times in row. And the problem was supposed to be fixed in 1.13. It clearly isn't.

I really hope they fix this 'save gets de-ironmanned if you click single player button before checksum calculation finishes on main menu' bug.

Yes, forming Manchu doesn't change your tech, but it changes your religion to Confucianism, which means when you form Qing you've auto reformed into Chinese tech group.

If you reform as Animist Yeren prior to forming Manchu, you'll be in Muslim tech group.

Yes, it's a trade-off since you'll lose the Horde government bonus and Tribal CB.

I mean you can still reform as Manchu. Don't have to stay Yeren tag. Or am I missing something?

Yes, but reforming as Manchu retains you in Chinese Tech group, due to Confucianism.

Yeren has the advantage of reforming into Muslim tech group, ahead of forming Manchu and Qing.

Eh? So confucianism makes me chinese tech if I reform as manchu? That hardly makes sense...

I thought all hordes reformed into muslim tech no matter what.

Oh well.

Last edited:
That kind of sucks since if you wait that long to form Manchu you're essentially giving up the free cores and claims that decision gives you for a Tech advantage. That would be giving up 15 free cores and 3 claims as Yeren.

Something happened that 'forced' me to switch to manchu tag before it was ehh... too late.

So I guess I won't have muslim tech units.

Besides, forming Qing makes you a monarchy, so I don't need a horde government reform per sé, if you can live with chinese units..

Granted, some crazy move like taking exploration and doing colony snatch (like in Ryukyu run) is possible, and you try to get catholic event while westernizing after reform, only to form manchu right then and then accepting catholic event, to get a westernised catholic Manchu in the end. But I guess it won't be THIS run.

No worries. Chinese Tech Qing is still massively OP, once you own half of Ming lands.

Only thing I'll favour for Muslim is the 80% cav ratio.

Here's to wishing a quick loss of Mandate so that you can start your invasion quicker.

So I am trying this out myself and while it isnt as easy to win the first few wars as Yeren as it it is with Jianzhou, it is more satisfying when you come out on top. It's also nice with the Shamanist decisions that are fairly easy to get and stay with you upon forming Manchu and converting to Confucianism.

? If you haven't reformed yet, as Nomad tech Manchu you can just switch to another religion regardless.

Keep in mind that regardless of your religion, the Qing form decision will swap you to Chinese tech unless you reform first. But if you switch religion as Manchu then reform, then form Qing, you'll be Muslim tech.

The most obvious choice is Sunni of course, but animist is possible if you want to screw around.
