@Wagonlitz

You left me hanging regarding Danish translations of medieval literature.

What did I do to merit that? :(
Sorry about that. Thought I had answered already.

Is it available in Danish? There was an Old Norse variant of the same story.
It is. After all it was "translating" (not sure it really can be called that) it into then current Danish around 1500 which led to Holger Danske become really popular and loads of legends about him being "rediscovered".
Whether it's available in modern Danish I don't know. And while reading things from the 1700s or 1600s isn't particularly hard, then I'm not sure whether reading that 1500 edition would be possible without practice. On the other hand then IIRC there weren't really any major shifts in the language after the giant one which happened as a consequence of the black death, so that would suggest it would be readable.

None?

In English, we had the Great Vowel Shift. But that's a spoken thing.

And I'm sure you know all about it, since it was discovered by that Dane.

Firstly I might be wrong. I don't know too much about how Danish changed in the 1500s. But as mentioned at least from the 1600s forwards there isn't really much change (though pronunciations likely changed). And the Black Death change took something like 50 years centered around 1400. Before something like 1400/1450 texts are significantly harder to read than texts from the 1500s and later.

And I'm sure you know all about it, since it was discovered by that Dane.
What did who discover? The great vowel shift? And if so then I guess it was Rasmus Rask you were referring to?

Otto Jesperson first described the Great Vowel Shift. There were other vowel shits (there's a Southern Vowel Shift) but this was The Great one.

Here's some English from the 1400s. It features a famous story about eggs.

That wasn't hard to read---at all. If that seriously is from the 1400s then English can't have changed much since then.
Also interesting that eggs also were called eyren back then. As you may or may not know egg is a loan word in English which English loaned from Danish. And eggs is Eiren in German, so now I'm wondering whether the original word for eggs in English was something like eyren.

Not much has changed, has it?

It's a bit of regional variation. Northerners said "egg" on account of the Norse influence. The goode wyf was apparently a Southerner.

Not sure what you mean.

The usual issues around usage, standardization, change, etc. See "liberalism" for example.

But things are standardised so I'm not sure I see your point.

Usage and the like aren't so clear cut in practice. And even the standardization changes, which always gets people excited one way or another.

Johnson was a top-notch lexicographical troll.

Tory: One who adheres to the ancient constitution of the state, and the apostolical hierarchy of the church of England, opposed to a Whig.

Oats: A grain, which in England is generally given to horses, but in Scotland appears to support the people.

On the other hand, he doesn't seem much fun. And he should know!

Lexicographer: A writer of dictionaries; a harmless drudge [...]

And beware of chicks playing music, too.

When Stella strikes the tuneful string,
In scenes of imitated spring,

Where beauty lavishes her pow'rs

On beds of never-fading flow'rs,
And pleasure propagates around

Each charm of modulated sound;

Ah! think not, in the dang'rous hour,

The nymph fictitious as the flow'r;

But shun, rash youth, the gay alcove,

Nor tempt the snares of wily love.

When charms thus press on ev'ry sense,

What thought of flight, or of defence?

Deceitful hope, and vain desire,

For ever flutter o'er her lyre,

Delighting, as the youth draws nigh,

To point the glances of her eye,

And forming, with unerring art,

New chains to hold the captive heart.

But on those regions of delight
Might truth intrude with daring flight,

Could Stella, sprightly, fair, and young,

One moment hear the moral song,
Instruction, with her flowers, might spring,

And wisdom warble from her string.

Mark, when from thousand mingled dies

Thou seest one pleasing form arise,

How active light, and thoughtful shade

In greater scenes each other aid;

Mark, when the different notes agree
In friendly contrariety,
How passion's well-accorded strife

Gives all the harmony of life;

Thy pictures shall thy conduct frame,

Consistent still, though not the same;

Thy musick teach the nobler art,

To tune the regulated heart.

Was the 18th century the worst century for literature?

Probably.

Each charm of modulated sound;

Ah! think not, in the dang'rous hour,

The nymph fictitious as the flow'r;

But shun, rash youth, the gay alcove,

Nor tempt the snares of wily love.

When charms thus press on ev'ry sense,

What thought of flight, or of defence?

Deceitful hope, and vain desire,

For ever flutter o'er her lyre,

Delighting, as the youth draws nigh,

To point the glances of her eye,

And forming, with unerring art,

New chains to hold the captive heart.

But on those regions of delight
Might truth intrude with daring flight,

Could Stella, sprightly, fair, and young,

One moment hear the moral song,
Instruction, with her flowers, might spring,

And wisdom warble from her string.

Mark, when from thousand mingled dies

Thou seest one pleasing form arise,

How active light, and thoughtful shade

In greater scenes each other aid;

Mark, when the different notes agree
In friendly contrariety,
How passion's well-accorded strife

Gives all the harmony of life;

Thy pictures shall thy conduct frame,

Consistent still, though not the same;

Thy musick teach the nobler art,

To tune the regulated heart.

Was the 18th century the worst century for literature?

Probably.
I guess that even Jonathan Swift couldn't save the 1700s from all those dreary philosophes and so-called Enlightenment thinkers.

Swift is unheralded for ingeniously making A Tale of a Tub something other than a tale about a tub.

But, yeah. There are some bright spots like Laurence Sterne and Alexander Pope, but almost anything part of or inspired by the "Enlightenment" is a dull study. And I've speculated that anyone who genuinely enjoys reading Rousseau would have to half-insane.

Well I suppose that since Enlightenment writing is dull, it only follows logically that the Romantics were so talented.

I don't know Bang. At least not in any context from whence I am assume you're coming
Herman Bang. He was one of the big impressionist writers and he toured the World with his writings (he died during a tour in the US). He also was accused of being homosexual (can't remember if he actually was it) and one of his fellow writers (another giant, Johs. V. Jensen (Nobel Prize in Literature 1944)) fiercely attacked him. It's believed Jensen was so fierce in his attacks of Bang because Jensen himself was accused of homosexuality (accusations he literally answered with violence).

Bang was also a journalist, and his carrier got kickstarted when he as 23 years old published his first big novel. It was about a mature woman seducing a young man, which caused a huge scandal and led to him being tried for publishing harmful literature. He was convicted and the book was seized and he was given the choice between paying a hefty or going to jail for 2 weeks.
A few years later he wanted to republish the book without the scenes, which were deemed harmful to society, but as he no longer owned a copy and couldn't buy one anywhere (they had all been seized) he went to the Royal Library to borrow it (they are legally obligated to have a copy of everything ever published in Danish, meaning that yes today their collection includes a large porn collection, which is locked away deep in the basements and requires special permits to be allowed to view in it's entirety though). At the Royal Library he was told though that while the book de facto did exist, it de jure did not. After lengthy negotiations he was allowed to read in it, in the library's reading hall, but only for one hour.

If you can find it then try reading his Ved Vejen.

Tine and Stuk is two of his other masterpieces. Tine is about war, love, and the destruction/futility war leads to. Stuk is about the phoniness of pretentious slums and mixed together with the love of a young man fading away.
And even the standardization changes, which always gets people excited one way or another.
Oh right. That was what caused the mayonnaise war after all.
