What route did you take from Hamborg to Copenhagen? Over Fyn or over Lolland (the latter requires the train taking the ferry.

Also it really is a shame that they have closed the Gedser railway (though if one is lucky it might some day be reopened). Otherwise you should have taken that way, since that is one of the original, pre WWI international corridors of Europe. Starting around 1900 it even had a Russian sleeping car in frequent schedule; don't know how long that existed, but at least until after WWI and probably much longer.
At Gedser you had ferry connection to Rostock and thereby the rest of Europe. The Gedser railway is the original "gateway to Scandinavia". The most silly thing is that the rail ferry connection wasn't abolished during the cold war; no, it was abolished pretty much instantly after the cold war when it would be expected to get much more service again...
Heck the Fehmern Belt Tunnel (i.e. a tunnel to replace the Rødby Puttgarten ferry) is a cold war project and doesn't really make much sense today, whereas a connection from Gedser to Rostock makes much more sense.
Gedser staton; it used to have two tracks (and lots and lots of waiting tracks where cars could be positioned while waiting for the ferry to arrive) back in its heyday when it was the gateway to Scandinavia and had loads of international trains going through it. It by the way was used in MATADOR!

Sjaelland isn't very scenic. Neither is Lower Saxony for that matter. Then again if I'd wanted to see mountains I'd have gone to Italy or Croatia or Scotland or somewhere like that.
It's a bit out of the way for coming from the southwest. I could have gone to Berlin and thence on the sleeper to Malmö from there (via the Trelleborg - Sassnitz ferry and thus not going through Denmark at all) but the connections using the ICE worked best. Also the Schweden-Spezial is dead cheap.
Average age of them was probably mid-fifties.
