For the last something like 90 years the Swedish state has had a monopoly on selling alcohol in Sweden. It is illegal for anybody, but the state shop, Systembolaget, to sell alcohol in Sweden. Hence the prices are what the Swedish state deem fitting and they are high to deter people from drinking.

I paid ca. 65 € for the trip. One bottle of Smirnoff costs 12 € in Germany while in Sweden it's ca. 34 €, so not many bottles are needed to be break-even for the trip.

Your problem is that you went through the Devil's Island. If you had visited Denmark proper things would have been different.

And alcohol is already taxed higher than other stuff over here. We have for example this super awesome tax that's called Schaumweinsteuer (sparkling wine tax) which was introduced in 1902 to finance the Imperial Navy and which is still in effect. I love to toast on the Imperial German Navy.

During WWI taxes were raised on all spirits in Denmark; before that it was so cheap that people used it to wash their windows with.
