I'm in late-game evil Xenophobe empire, and I'd filled up a bunch of worlds with slaves for resource production. Everything fine, everything good. So I make a couple ecunemopoli, some research habitats, and set all my worlds to only grow my elite Human race, so I could transfer them when needed to the specialist jobs that I was making.

Now, I wasn't super paying attention, and I'd only set ALL my worlds to only produce humans very late, so I didn't notice that my entire empire was only producing unemployed slaves for some reason. After I'd done the entire empire making humans thing, I was wondering why on Old Earth I was only getting free xeno slaves... then it hit me.

My fresh new humans were happily taking the slave's jobs and throwing my poor slaves out into the rough streets! DEY TOOK DER JOBS!

I'd thoughtlessly resettled all those, uh, free slaves to other jobs, and now I have a bunch of hardy elite humans happily working in the mines. Such a great work ethic! They really believe in the right to work! The human dignity of good, honest, slave-free labor.

Anyway.

There should be a living standard to set so that primary races in xenophobe empires start out in the Specialist tier at least. It's a bit silly otherwise. I mean, yes, not in early game, but something to switch over to when you have enough slaves. I just really can't imagine a bunch of unemployed privileged governor's children deciding they needed to work badly enough that they go down to the berry fields and start picking.

If you have open specialist jobs, the humans will immediately promote and the slaves will take the old worker jobs back.

It does make a certain kind of sense though. Even in an economy run on stratification and slavery, the elite races will still have poor people among them who would be eager for work.

A spoiled governor's kid might not settle for picking berries in the field but the university drop out with a a short attention span and no marketable skills might.


That said I agree with you.

It makes no sense for the farm and mine owners of the world to decide to stop using their slaves, who do not need to be paid, to switch to paid labor with human pops and decrease their profits.

Since slaves have no autonomy, it makes sense to have a way to lock them into a job permanently into a job even if you can't for other kinds of pops (You should be able to lock robots into jobs as well if they don't have Sentient AI+ citizen rights) and prevent non-slave/non-robots from ever working those jobs.

And I think a living standard that prevents a pop from ever being a worker could be cool. But I think if unemployed, they should consume far more consumer goods than normal. Something like "Privileged Excess" living standard. It could be the "evil" opposite of Utopian Living Standards. with Privledged classes not generating unrest or crime when unemployed but consuming huge amounts of consumer goods.

Sounds like it's just a problem of job allocation. Right now different species already prioritize jobs according to their traits, so I don't see why it can't be done for slaves as well.

Did your humans have social welfare or utopian conditions?

Otherwise they'd get more money from working even the menial jobs. It's not like they'd be digging with their hands anyway, they'd be operating machines.

Perhaps the menial jobs should prioritize the species with the lowest species rights though, it would make sense that they'd be the cheapest available labor.

Rulers x2 +20 happy + 800 pol% power
Specialists x1.5 +15 happy +400% pol power
Workers x0.1 -5 happy -150 pol% power
Slaves x0 -15 happy -1500 pol% power (made irrelevant by slave plants anyway, so could be anything honestly)

Unemployed specialists and rulers do not demote, but instead generates amenities and unity.

This is more of the sort of strata control I'd prefer in the new system. I'd like to limit some species to being workers without enslaving them. I'd like to limit some to being rulers or specialists to prevent the weak and intelligent from displacing their slaves in the mines.

The best idea to deal with this is to simply discourage further growth via decision, and resettle excess ruling species pops elsewhere.

I feel terrible for suggesting it and incredibly awkward saying it (especially since this game literally lets me enslave and eat other species, and this is a much milder form of evil than that) but the new system would really benefit from some form of Segregation/Discrimination mechanic to show how in a non-xenophillic/non-egalitarian empire, equality doesn't come easy for the new alien species.

Sure Citizen rights/Residency/etc hint at this institutional bias, but it doesn't really show up in terms of effects on job promotion and social mobility like it should.

In all honesty it wouldn't be THAT big a deal if the resettlement screen wasn't just horrible to use. I don't purge, so all the pops can be put right back where they were, and all the excess humans can just go to the free research and metallurgy slots.

But when I think about micromanaging using that terrible resettlement window, I just feel tired.
