All these sprites are Civ3 conversions, and all but four (two by NavyDawg, one by MoscaTnT and one by Balam-Agab) were originally created by the same person - Gary Childress. The main credit should go to them, as all I've done is to make the sprites compatible with Darkest Hour

Important: If you download the Chinese, British Raj, Australian and Rebel units you need to make the following changes in the country file that you'll find in Darkest Hour/Mods/Darkest Hour Full/db

CHI;LightBrown;CHI;MIN;X to
CHI;LightBrown;CHI;CHI;X

AST;LightGray;AST;ENG;X to
AST;LightGray;AST;AST;X

U02;DarkYellow;ENG;MIN;X to
U02;DarkYellow;ENG;U02;X

(Note that U02 is UZero2)

REB;Black;ENG;MIN;X
REB;Black;ENG;REB;X

If you don't make these changes, the Chinese, Australian, British Raj and Rebel units won't appear

Congratulations, you've been very hard at work. They look great!

This is so awesome,in future you will add what nations?

I'm hoping to do all the main nations apart from the three I mentioned that aren't available, although it may be possible to get around this. There are also some sprites for mountain troops, marines and paratroopers. I've seen some that have actually already been converted by somebody else, but in some cases the Civ colours have been left on. They have blue armbands, epaulettes or backpacks, for example; so I'd like to remove these, as I did with the British and Japanese infantry.

Hummm,ok,but do not worry, our army was nearly a copy of american army :p

Hello again.

I've added three more sprites to the downloads in the first post in this thread.

In addition, I've reposted the first three sprites because I noticed that they weren't very well positioned. Some of them were too high, with their heads touching the flags, or they were too far to one side, or both. Sorry about that. I've also changed the screenshots for those sprites so you can see how the positions have changed.

The new sprites are German, American and Italian/Polish infantry.

Italian/Polish? - Well, they're actually supposed to be Polish, but I've decided to use them for the Italians because there aren't any Italian sprites at the moment, the Italians play a bigger role in the game, and the sprites are fairly green in colour. If you decide to change them and use them as Polish infantry make sure that you go to Darkest Hour/Mods/Darkest Hour Full/db/country
and change POL;DarkGray;POL;FRA;X
to POL;DarkGray;POL;POL;X
or you will continue to see whatever you are using for France.

Meanwhile, those of you who may have read my rant on another thread concerning the glut of German sprites and lack of others may be surprised to find yet another German sprite here from me. In fact, the German sprite I've chosen, carrying an MP44, has already been converted and can be found in puma's AOD pack. I've redone it, but I've made three changes: 1. the sprite faces forward for STAND and not south-west, 2. the gun fires only one round at a time like those of the other sprites and not like an automatic, and 3. the gun has been altered to look more like a standard WWII rifle, at least when firing. I know that the Germans tended to have better equipment, but it looks rather strange when one sprite is spewing fire while its opponent has to cock the rifle between every shot. I don't mind specialised units such as paratroopers having automatics, but I do think that the basic infantry should have similar weapons.

Also, I should warn you that there is a small fault with the American sprite, which appears to skip slightly when running. I don't think that it's too big a problem, but I thought I'd better point this out.

I've now added three more sprites for Russian and French infantry and French mountain troops.

Once again I've had to cheat a bit. The Russian sprites, which were created by NavyDawg, were actually designed for the post-war period and were carrying kalashnikovs. I've used the non-automatic attack variant in which the gun fires only twice per sequence. I've also converted the gun to make it look more like a standard WWII rifle.

I did warn you that some basic infantry sprites were missing, and the biggest headache concerns the French, as there aren't really any sprites of this type that resemble them. Gary Childress has made two varients of French mountain troops, one with a brown uniform and one in blue, however, and in the end I've chosen the blue version to be the French infantry and the brown one as the mountain units. It's the best I can do I'm afraid. Of course, you're free to change the sprites into whatever units you want them to be.

If anyone is thinking of making sprites of this type specifically for Darkest Hour, please don't start with ten variants of the Germans, start with basic French infantry!

This mod is freaking awesome! Keep it up! You're doing a really nice job! ;)

I've now added three more sprites for Australian and British Raj infantry and French marines.

The code in the countries file for the Australians is AST, while for the British Raj it's U02

So, make sure that you go to Darkest Hour/Mods/Darkest Hour Full/db/country and change

AST;LightGray;AST;ENG;X to AST;LightGray;AST;AST;X and

U02;DarkYellow;ENG;MIN;X to U02;DarkYellow;ENG;U02;X

If you want to use the Australian sprites for New Zealand and/or South Africa as well, the codes for them are NZL and SAF.

The Australian and Raj sprites were made by Gary Childress, and the French marines were made by NavyDawg.

I don't wish to side-track your mod, but have you considered helping with RDD mod?

We have LOADS of sprites just waiting to be converted... 1812 infantry... ships of the line... enticing stuff...

Hello novapaddy,

Yes, I suppose I've been a bit selfish pursuing my own aims, but there were a couple of itches that I needed to scratch!

Just give me another week or so to finish another big project that's been taking up most of my time and then I'll sign up for helping you with RDD.

Don't worry, I'm definitely going to continue with the WWI and WWII sprites until I've done all the ones I set out to do. I've already done all the most difficult and time-consuming ones for this thread (those with the gun changes and the Italian/Polish one with it's double dose of Civ colour), so it shouldn't be any problem to continue with this and help out with RDD at the same time. It's been something else that has been eating up most of my time, and that's nearly finished.

I'm not really planning to do any modern sprites at the moment, although I might end up doing some for RDD, who knows?

Hello Chicken Spadge!
Thanks for offering to help with RDD.
RDD mod goes from 1790 to 2000, so most of the sprites will be from periods other than modern times.

Most of the WW2 sprites are done, so the work will be for the period 1790 to before WW2, and then after WW2 to 2000.

LOTS of work to do.
Can you mention it in the RDD thread, as I'm sure moxs (mod leader) will be delighted to get the news. Cheers
