Wrong face

Here's my king Philippe of Alania:

Here's however the image which is shown in scenario menu:

You could say that he does look like bit different in those pictures.

Every other king have had correct face, but they have been either Alans or Turks and Philippe is first light cultured king I have. So I was wondering if it's somehow dynasty related?

It is tag related. Tags have a certain default culture, and the scenario menu uses the portait set (light or dark) associated with that culture. In-game, the correct portrait set is used based on actual ruler culture.

Since BOLG has the "dark" culture Alan as default, your king is portrayed as such.
This works both ways: if an Alan were to get the French crown, he would be shown as "light" on the scenario menu but remain "dark" in game.

i run into that every now and then too. i think it's culture/title related. i.e. somehow the screen defaults to showing what he'd look like if he got sunburned. Or had anemia.

When the game reads a save game file and sets up the load screen, it does not actually look for the ruler's characters entry in the file. Instead there is a dna value given for the title BOLG (Khazaria), and that is used to generate a leader picture from the appropriate face picture set. There are only two face picture sets (dark and light) and as jord said, in the game files each title has a default set which is used in the load screen.

I have this happen when I have a child ruler. The face of the dead ruler before him pops up on the scenario menu. It was bit disconcerting at first b/c I thought I forgot to save, but thankfully the games just a bit quirky like that. I guess it just likes to have a face to put up there.

Look again... it's actually the child's face when he grows up. That's since the scenario screen just uses the DNA value, and does not hide a kid's face like the actual game does.

Aye, you're right. He just looks so much like his father I thought it was him.
