Wow this is great!

I just realized there is no longer a CD check in one of the later patchest (yepp it took a while). So yeasterday I tried to get EU2 working with one CD on LAN, and it works! I've also managed to get my brother addicted to LAN multiplayer now ; our only trouble is that TAB chatting crashes the game far to often. We'll try Shift+F12 now but it that doesn't solve the issue, I guess we'll have to give up chatting over LAN.

Nope I had some trouble before while testing 1.05 (I assumed it was the 1 CD, 2 computers issue). Regardless of that all I can say: This is great.

Hmmm. Often a license allows you to install a game and play it on only one computer at a time, but I do not remember whether that is the case with the EU2 license. I would not be surprised if it was, though.

I might have violated that one... last time I stayed with my parents, I set up a three-player LAN with me, my father, and my sister. It was good fun, although they wanted to play Fantasia because the real scenarios had too much happening for them (?!?)
I was using two CDs though... my own, and I got my father the game as a birthday present.

sounds pretty cool the play lan with family i think its legal to use it to play lan.

I know that in Dutch copyright law you ARE allowed to make copies for your own use.. so i don't see why you wouldn't be allowed to play on a LAN with your family.

Q: What on earth does the right to make a backup copy have to do with running multiple instances of the software on different machines?

A: Nothing. One has do do with maintaining the physical integrity of the data involved, the other has to do with your rights of use.


As an example from the HOI manual, as I couldn't find my EU2 manual (this formulation is pretty standard in game licenses):

2. Permitted Uses
(a) Right to install and use. You may install and use the software on a single computer. If you want to use the software on more than one computer, please contact the company for information concerning an upgraded license allowing use of software with additional computers
(b) Right to copy. You may make and maintain one copy of the software for backup or archival purposes, provided that the original and each copy of the software are kept in your possession

The 'only one running at any one time' rule isn't universal though. Warcraft 2 I recall allowed one CD to be installed on multiple computers, and LAN games would work if there was at least one CD for every concurrent number of players.
Other games (like Red Alert 2) game with 2 CDs specifically so that 2 people could use them to play LAN together without having to buy a separate game - at least, that's what I always thought

alternative answer, you ARE allowed to have one CD in your car to use there, one at home, one upstairs (you got a CD-player there too)

at least, thats how it is in the Netherlands.

Yes, but they have to be all for you. This means you are allowed one in your home pc and one in your laptop, as long as they aren't both used at once. In computing, this is a single-user licence as opposed to a single-machine licence. A LAN game with your family doesn't come in either category.

Usually a single-user licence means that it can only be in use on one machine at once.
